Forecasting the cost of processing multi-join queries via hashing for main-memory databases (Extended version)
Database management systems (DBMSs) carefully optimize complex multi-join
queries to avoid expensive disk I/O. As servers today feature tens or hundreds
of gigabytes of RAM, a significant fraction of many analytic databases becomes
memory-resident. Even after careful tuning for an in-memory environment, a
linear disk I/O model such as the one implemented in PostgreSQL may make query
response time predictions that are up to 2X slower than the optimal multi-join
query plan over memory-resident data. This paper introduces a memory I/O cost
model to identify good evaluation strategies for complex query plans with
multiple hash-based equi-joins over memory-resident data. The proposed cost
model is carefully validated for accuracy using three different systems,
including an Amazon EC2 instance, to control for hardware-specific differences.
Prior work in parallel query evaluation has advocated right-deep and bushy
trees for multi-join queries due to their greater parallelization and
pipelining potential. A surprising finding is that the conventional wisdom from
shared-nothing disk-based systems does not directly apply to the modern
shared-everything memory hierarchy. As corroborated by our model, the
performance gap between the optimal left-deep and right-deep query plan can
grow to about 10X as the number of joins in the query increases.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, extended version of the paper to appear in

Role of edge inclination in optical microdisk resonator for label-free sensing
In this paper we report on the measurement and modelling of enhanced optical
refractometric sensors based on whispering-gallery-modes. The devices under
test are optical microresonators made of silicon nitride on silicon oxide. In
our approach, these microresonators are vertically coupled to a buried
waveguide with the aim of creating integrated and cost-effective devices. The
optimization analysis is a delicate balance of resonance quality factor and
evanescent field overlap with the sorrounding environment to analyze. By
numerical simulations we show that the microdisk thickness is critical to yield
high figure of merit for the sensor, while edge inclination is less important.
We also show that figures of merit as high as 1600/RIU are feasible.Comment: 10 page
Adjoint-Based Design of a Distributed Propulsion Concept with a Power Objective
The adjoint-based design capability in FUN3D is extended to allow efficient gradient-based optimization and design of concepts with highly integrated and distributed aero-propulsive systems. Calculations of propulsive power, along with the derivatives needed to perform adjoint-based design, have been implemented in FUN3D. The design capability is demonstrated by the shape optimization and propulsor sizing of NASAs PEGASUS aircraft concept. The optimization objective is the minimization of flow power at the aerodynamic interface planes for the wing-mounted propulsors, as well as the tail-cone boundary layer ingestion propulsor, subject to vehicle performance and propulsive constraints
A Data-driven Approach to Robust Control of Multivariable Systems by Convex Optimization
The frequency-domain data of a multivariable system in different operating
points is used to design a robust controller with respect to the measurement
noise and multimodel uncertainty. The controller is fully parametrized in terms
of matrix polynomial functions and can be formulated as a centralized,
decentralized or distributed controller. All standard performance
specifications like , and loop shaping are considered in a
unified framework for continuous- and discrete-time systems. The control
problem is formulated as a convex-concave optimization problem and then
convexified by linearization of the concave part around an initial controller.
The performance criterion converges monotonically to a local optimal solution
in an iterative algorithm. The effectiveness of the method is compared with
fixed-structure controllers using non-smooth optimization and with full-order
optimal controllers via simulation examples. Finally, the experimental data of
a gyroscope is used to design a data-driven controller that is successfully
applied on the real system
Constraints on the architecture of the HD 95086 planetary system with the Gemini Planet Imager
We present astrometric monitoring of the young exoplanet HD 95086 b obtained
with the Gemini Planet Imager between 2013 and 2016. A small but significant
position angle change is detected at constant separation; the orbital motion is
confirmed with literature measurements. Efficient Monte Carlo techniques place
preliminary constraints on the orbital parameters of HD 95086 b. With 68%
confidence, a semimajor axis of 61.7^{+20.7}_{-8.4} au and an inclination of
153.0^{+9.7}_{-13.5} deg are favored, with eccentricity less than 0.21. Under
the assumption of a co-planar planet-disk system, the periastron of HD 95086 b
is beyond 51 au with 68% confidence. Therefore HD 95086 b cannot carve the
entire gap inferred from the measured infrared excess in the SED of HD 95086.
We use our sensitivity to additional planets to discuss specific scenarios
presented in the literature to explain the geometry of the debris belts. We
suggest that either two planets on moderately eccentric orbits or three to four
planets with inhomogeneous masses and orbital properties are possible. The
sensitivity to additional planetary companions within the observations
presented in this study can be used to help further constrain future dynamical
simulations of the planet-disk system.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
Shaped Pupil Lyot Coronagraphs: High-Contrast Solutions for Restricted Focal Planes
Coronagraphs of the apodized pupil and shaped pupil varieties use the
Fraunhofer diffraction properties of amplitude masks to create regions of high
contrast in the vicinity of a target star. Here we present a hybrid coronagraph
architecture in which a binary, hard-edged shaped pupil mask replaces the gray,
smooth apodizer of the apodized pupil Lyot coronagraph (APLC). For any contrast
and bandwidth goal in this configuration, as long as the prescribed region of
contrast is restricted to a finite area in the image, a shaped pupil is the
apodizer with the highest transmission. We relate the starlight cancellation
mechanism to that of the conventional APLC. We introduce a new class of
solutions in which the amplitude profile of the Lyot stop, instead of being
fixed as a padded replica of the telescope aperture, is jointly optimized with
the apodizer. Finally, we describe shaped pupil Lyot coronagraph (SPLC) designs
for the baseline architecture of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey
Telescope-Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets (WFIRST-AFTA) coronagraph.
These SPLCs help to enable two scientific objectives of the WFIRST-AFTA
mission: (1) broadband spectroscopy to characterize exoplanet atmospheres in
reflected starlight and (2) debris disk imaging.Comment: 41 pages, 15 figures; published in the JATIS special section on
