A Broadband UHF Tag Antenna For Near-Field and Far-Field RFID Communications

The paper deals with the design of passive broadband tag antenna for Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) band. The antenna is intended for both near and far fields Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) applications. The meander dipole tag antenna geometry modification is designed for frequency bandwidth increasing. The measured bandwidth of the proposed broadband Tag antenna is more than 140 MHz (820–960 MHz), which can cover the entire UHF RFID band. A comparison between chip impedance of datasheet and the measured chip impedance has been used in our simulations. The proposed progressive meandered antenna structure, with an overall size of 77 mm × 14 mm × 0.787 mm, produces strong and uniform magnetic field distribution in the near-field zone. The antenna impedance is matched to common UHF chips in market simply by tuning its capacitive and inductive values since a perfect matching is required in the antenna design in order to enhance the near and the far field communications. Measurements confirm that the designed antenna exhibits good performance of Tag identification for both near-field and far-field UHF RFID applications

One of our daily issues for searching indoor lost item remain unresolved until today as there is no any systematic way of locating it. Unaccounted amount of time and energy has been wasted each day trying to retrieve it based on memory. Therefore, in this project, a prototype is proposed to locate indoor lost item utilizing received signal strength (RSS) for distance estimation. The prototype primary consists of a small size tag for attaching on any item and a reader for computing the estimated location of the tag. A positioning algorithm is developed to analyse the behaviour of received signal strength and calculate the probability of the target location. As the nature of indoor environment varies across each location, the prototype is tested at multiple indoor locations for refining the algorithm and verifying its robustness and consistency in estimating the target location. The results obtained showed that the percentage of error for direction probability is 32 % and accuracy of distance is at 0.9m

    RFID In-Flight Security Seal

In the airline industry, on board sales are often faced with issue of pilferages. It is difficult to determine which party is involved in this issue as no strong evidence can be used to prove it. Plastic security seals are commonly used to secure contents of the airline trolleys for on board sales have proven to be easily compromised. This project proposes a solution to this issue by developing a prototype of an electronic seal through the use of semi-passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Semi-passive RFID technology does not interfere with the avionic control system, which make it an ideal choice to be implemented on board. This project is essentially a system integration of semi-passive RFID, active RFID and microcontroller which involves the development of firmware programming with power aware computing technique. Tampering the electronic seal triggers the system and wakes up the microcontroller. The microcontroller stores events in memory and returns to sleep mode. During investigation, data of the electronic seal can be read or downloaded. Further analysis of the data could be carried out to ensure the time stamp is tally with the personnel scheduling. In conclusion, the author proposes a concept solution to this serious issue of pilferages in the airline industry by developing an electronic seal which is avionic approved

RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION OF PERSONNEL IN PLANT DURING EMERGENCY CONDITIONS

Nowadays, nearly every industrial plant throughout the nation are taking concern on the emerging safety issues that is seemed to be more apparent - compared to just taking serious attention to the production line. It's been said that if you think safety is expensive, try an accident. Safety of each personnel is deeply linked on the psychological part that contributes to the well being of an industrial plant andtherefore the workers are part of the valuable assets to the company. Parallel to the development of industrial competency and complexity, the safety issues have becoming more technologically related. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), already known for its agility and reliability in supply chain management, has now being diverging in areas regarding safety. RFID is not just a label that tags for certain equipments / goods, but now able to detect location of moving object, especially human, in an enclosed area. From simulation upto practical application, RFID had shown significant improvement for a faster and precise detection of personnel compared to other traditional barcode detection or manual head count to ensure safety evacuation of all personnel during emergency

This report covers the implementation of RFID Login System for computers. The objective of this project is to replace the existing smart card used to login to a computer, with RFID technology. RFID technology is identified as the best alternative for smart card, due to its high level of security. The project scope is to fabricate RFID tag and reader for computer login. The transponder will transmit the signal containing user's information upon activation and the reader will process the information for verification purposes. The scope of the study is mainly about the architecture of RFID and how to develop hardware related to RFID. A prototype mainly consists of microcontroller application, radio frequency data transmission circuitry and graphical user interface was successfully developed. The prototype can be effectively used for computer login, based on RFID technology.
