    Current measurement in power electronic and motor drive applications - a comprehensive study

    Current measurement has many applications in power electronics and motor drives. Current measurement is used for control, protection, monitoring, and power management purposes. Parameters such as low cost, accuracy, high current measurement, isolation needs, broad frequency bandwidth, linearity and stability with temperature variations, high immunity to dv/dt, low realization effort, fast response time, and compatibility with integration process are required to ensure high performance of current sensors. Various current sensing techniques based on different physical effects such as Faraday\u27s induction law, Ohm\u27s law, Lorentz force law, magneto-resistance effect, and magnetic saturation are studied in this thesis. Review and examination of these current measurement methods are presented. The most common current sensing method is to insert a sensing resistor in the path of an unknown current. This method incurs significant power loss in a sense resistor at high output currents. Alternatives for accurate and lossless current measurement are presented in this thesis. Various current sensing techniques with self-tuning and self-calibration for accurate and continuous current measurement are also discussed. Isolation and large bandwidth from dc to several kilo-hertz or mega-hertz are the most difficult, but also most crucial characteristics of current measurement. Electromagnetic-based current sensing techniques, which are used to achieve these characteristics, are analyzed. Many applications require average current information for control purposes. Different average current sensing methods of measuring average current are also reviewed. --Abstract, page iii

    Development of Non-Destructive Testing by Eddy Currents for Highly Demanding Engineering Applications

    Defect detection with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is essential in accidents prevention, requiring R&TD to generate new scientific and procedural knowledge for new products with high safety requirements. A current challenge lies in the detection of surface and sub-surface micro defects with NDT by Eddy Currents (EC). The main objective of this work was the development of applied research, technological innovation and experimental validation of EC customized systems for three highly demanding inspection scenarios: micro defects in tubular geometries; brazed joints for the automotive industry; and high-speed moving composite materials. This objective implied starting from the scientific fundamentals of NDT by EC to design and simulate EC probes and the prototypes developed were tested in industrial environment, reaching a TRL ≈ 5. Another objective, of a more scientific and disruptive nature, was to test a new technique for the creation of EC in the materials to be inspect, named Magnetic Permeability Pattern Substrate (MPPS). This technique consists on the development of substrates/films with patterns of different magnetic permeabilities rather than the use of excitation bobbin coils or filaments of complex geometry. The experimental results demonstrated that the prototypes developed for the three industrial applications studied outperformed the state of the art, allowing the detection of target defects with a very good signal-to-noise ratio: in tubular geometries defects with depth of 0.5 mm and thickness of 0.2 mm in any scanning position; in the laser brazed weld beads pores with 0.13 mm diameter and internal artificial defects 1 mm from the weld surface; in composite materials defects under 1 mm at speeds up to 4 m/s and 3 mm lift-off. The numerical simulations assisted the probe design, allowing to describe and characterize electrical and magnetic phenomena.     Surface and inter-phase analysis of Composite Materials using Electromagnetic Techniques based on SQUID Sensors

    In this thesis an electromagnetic characterization and a non-destructive evaluation of new advanced composite materials, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Fiber-Glass Aluminium (FGA) laminates, using an eddy-current technique based on HTS dc-SQUID (Superconductive QUantum Interference Device) magnetometer is proposed. The main goal of this thesis is to propose a prototype based on a superconducting sensor, such as SQUID, to guarantee a more accuracy in the quality control at research level of the composite materials employed in the aeronautical applications. A briefly introduction about the superconductivity, a complete description of the SQUID properties and its basic working principles have been reported. Moreover, an overview of the most widely used non destructive technique employed in several industrial and research fields have been described. Particular attention is given to the eddy current testing and the technical improvement obtained using SQUID in NDE. The attention has been focused on two particular application, that are the main topics of this thesis. The first concerns with the investigation of the damage due to impact loading on the composites materials, and the second is the study of the corrosion process on the metallic surface. The electrical and mechanical properties of the tested advanced composite materials, such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) and Fiber-glass Aluminium (FGA) laminates are investigated. The experimental results concern the non-destructive evaluation of impact loading on the CFRPs and FGA composites, by means of the electromagnetic techniques; the investigation of the electromechanical effect in the CFRPs using the SQUID based prototype and the AFM analyses; and the study of corrosion activity of the metallic surface using magnetic field measurement

    Wireless Power Transfer Technology for Electric Vehicle Charging

    In the years 1884-1889, after Nicola Tesla invented "Tesla Coil", wireless power transfer (WPT) technology is in front of the world. WPT technologies can be categorized into three groups: inductive based WPT, magnetic resonate coupling (MRC) based WPT and electromagnetic radiation based WPT. MRC-WPT is advantageous with respect to its high safety and long transmission distance. Thus it plays an important role in the design of wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. The most significant drawback of all WPT systems is the low efficiency of the energy transferred. Most losses happen during the transfer from coil to coil. This thesis proposes a novel coil design and adaptive hardware to improve power transfer efficiency (PTE) in magnetic resonant coupling WPT and mitigate coil misalignment, a crucial roadblock to the acceptance of WPT for EV. In addition, I do some analysis of multiple segmented transmitters design for dynamic wireless EVs charging and propose an adaptive renewable (wind) energy-powered dynamic wireless charging system for EV

    Directional eddy current probe configuration for in-line detection of out-of-plane wrinkles

    Real-time monitoring of carbon fibre composites during Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) manufacturing remains a challenge for non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. An directional eddy-current (EC) probe with asymmetric transmit and differential receive (Tx-dRx) coils is designed, constructed and characterized to evaluate the detectability of out-of-plane wrinkles. Initial studies were conducted to determine suitable excitation frequencies and to analyse the impact of relative orientations of driver and pickup coils on wrinkle detectability. The probe configurations are evaluated experimentally and employ a new finite element modelling approach to better understand the relationship between eddy-current density and defect detection. The findings indicate that a probe configuration with an asymmetric driver coil normal to the material surface and aligned with the fibre directions, and with differential pickup coils 90 degrees to the scanning direction, shows the best capability for out-of-plane wrinkle detection, with SNR >20 for wrinkles over 1.3 mm in amplitude

    Electric vehicles (EVs) have become an alternative option for a clean energy society. A new charging technology which is wireless charging has been developed to satisfy the limitations of EVs which are the electric drive range and battery storage. Companies like Tesla, BMW, and Nissan have already started to develop wireless charging for EVs. This paper presents a literature review on wireless charging of EVs. The existing technologies for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system are summarized for different power applications. Coil design plays the most vital role in the WPT system so the different coil design with the transferred efficiency is reviewed. The other important parameters and technical components like significant factors of WPT system, track layout of dynamic wireless charging, foreign object detection method, and position alignment method that are affecting the efficiency of the wireless charging system are also discussed. Lastly, health and safety concerns for human beings and living things are investigated
