    Transductive Segmentation of Textured Meshes

    International audienceThis paper addresses the problem of segmenting a textured mesh into objects or object classes, consistently with user-supplied seeds. We view this task as transductive learning and use the flexibility of kernel-based weights to incorporate a various number of diverse features. Our method combines a Laplacian graph regularizer that enforces spatial coherence in label propagation and an SVM classifier that ensures dissemination of the seeds characteristics. Our interactive framework allows to easily specify classes seeds with sketches drawn on the mesh and potentially refine the segmentation. We obtain qualitatively good segmentations on several architectural scenes and show the applicability of our method to outliers removing

    Data-Driven Shape Analysis and Processing

    Data-driven methods play an increasingly important role in discovering geometric, structural, and semantic relationships between 3D shapes in collections, and applying this analysis to support intelligent modeling, editing, and visualization of geometric data. In contrast to traditional approaches, a key feature of data-driven approaches is that they aggregate information from a collection of shapes to improve the analysis and processing of individual shapes. In addition, they are able to learn models that reason about properties and relationships of shapes without relying on hard-coded rules or explicitly programmed instructions. We provide an overview of the main concepts and components of these techniques, and discuss their application to shape classification, segmentation, matching, reconstruction, modeling and exploration, as well as scene analysis and synthesis, through reviewing the literature and relating the existing works with both qualitative and numerical comparisons. We conclude our report with ideas that can inspire future research in data-driven shape analysis and processing.Comment: 10 pages, 19 figure

    Bridging the gap between reconstruction and synthesis

    Aplicat embargament des de la data de defensa fins el 15 de gener de 20223D reconstruction and image synthesis are two of the main pillars in computer vision. Early works focused on simple tasks such as multi-view reconstruction and texture synthesis. With the spur of Deep Learning, the field has rapidly progressed, making it possible to achieve more complex and high level tasks. For example, the 3D reconstruction results of traditional multi-view approaches are currently obtained with single view methods. Similarly, early pattern based texture synthesis works have resulted in techniques that allow generating novel high-resolution images. In this thesis we have developed a hierarchy of tools that cover all these range of problems, lying at the intersection of computer vision, graphics and machine learning. We tackle the problem of 3D reconstruction and synthesis in the wild. Importantly, we advocate for a paradigm in which not everything should be learned. Instead of applying Deep Learning naively we propose novel representations, layers and architectures that directly embed prior 3D geometric knowledge for the task of 3D reconstruction and synthesis. We apply these techniques to problems including scene/person reconstruction and photo-realistic rendering. We first address methods to reconstruct a scene and the clothed people in it while estimating the camera position. Then, we tackle image and video synthesis for clothed people in the wild. Finally, we bridge the gap between reconstruction and synthesis under the umbrella of a unique novel formulation. Extensive experiments conducted along this thesis show that the proposed techniques improve the performance of Deep Learning models in terms of the quality of the reconstructed 3D shapes / synthesised images, while reducing the amount of supervision and training data required to train them. In summary, we provide a variety of low, mid and high level algorithms that can be used to incorporate prior knowledge into different stages of the Deep Learning pipeline and improve performance in tasks of 3D reconstruction and image synthesis.La reconstrucció 3D i la síntesi d'imatges són dos dels pilars fonamentals en visió per computador. Els estudis previs es centren en tasques senzilles com la reconstrucció amb informació multi-càmera i la síntesi de textures. Amb l'aparició del "Deep Learning", aquest camp ha progressat ràpidament, fent possible assolir tasques molt més complexes. Per exemple, per obtenir una reconstrucció 3D, tradicionalment s'utilitzaven mètodes multi-càmera, en canvi ara, es poden obtenir a partir d'una sola imatge. De la mateixa manera, els primers treballs de síntesi de textures basats en patrons han donat lloc a tècniques que permeten generar noves imatges completes en alta resolució. En aquesta tesi, hem desenvolupat una sèrie d'eines que cobreixen tot aquest ventall de problemes, situats en la intersecció entre la visió per computador, els gràfics i l'aprenentatge automàtic. Abordem el problema de la reconstrucció i la síntesi 3D en el món real. És important destacar que defensem un paradigma on no tot s'ha d'aprendre. Enlloc d'aplicar el "Deep Learning" de forma naïve, proposem representacions novedoses i arquitectures que incorporen directament els coneixements geomètrics ja existents per a aconseguir la reconstrucció 3D i la síntesi d'imatges. Nosaltres apliquem aquestes tècniques a problemes com ara la reconstrucció d'escenes/persones i a la renderització d'imatges fotorealistes. Primer abordem els mètodes per reconstruir una escena, les persones vestides que hi ha i la posició de la càmera. A continuació, abordem la síntesi d'imatges i vídeos de persones vestides en situacions quotidianes. I finalment, aconseguim, a través d'una nova formulació única, connectar la reconstrucció amb la síntesi. Els experiments realitzats al llarg d'aquesta tesi demostren que les tècniques proposades milloren el rendiment dels models de "Deepp Learning" pel que fa a la qualitat de les reconstruccions i les imatges sintetitzades alhora que redueixen la quantitat de dades necessàries per entrenar-los. En resum, proporcionem una varietat d'algoritmes de baix, mitjà i alt nivell que es poden utilitzar per incorporar els coneixements previs a les diferents etapes del "Deep Learning" i millorar el rendiment en tasques de reconstrucció 3D i síntesi d'imatges.Postprint (published version

    Semantic Segmentation of 3D Textured Meshes for Urban Scene Analysis

    International audienceClassifying 3D measurement data has become a core problem in photogram-metry and 3D computer vision, since the rise of modern multiview geometry techniques, combined with affordable range sensors. We introduce a Markov Random Field-based approach for segmenting textured meshes generated via multi-view stereo into urban classes of interest. The input mesh is first partitioned into small clusters, referred to as superfacets, from which geometric and photometric features are computed. A random forest is then trained to predict the class of each superfacet as well as its similarity with the neighboring superfacets. Similarity is used to assign the weights of the Markov Random Field pairwise-potential and accounts for contextual information between the classes. The experimental results illustrate the efficacy and accuracy of the proposed framework

    From Fully-Supervised Single-Task to Semi-Supervised Multi-Task Deep Learning Architectures for Segmentation in Medical Imaging Applications

    Medical imaging is routinely performed in clinics worldwide for the diagnosis and treatment of numerous medical conditions in children and adults. With the advent of these medical imaging modalities, radiologists can visualize both the structure of the body as well as the tissues within the body. However, analyzing these high-dimensional (2D/3D/4D) images demands a significant amount of time and effort from radiologists. Hence, there is an ever-growing need for medical image computing tools to extract relevant information from the image data to help radiologists perform efficiently. Image analysis based on machine learning has pivotal potential to improve the entire medical imaging pipeline, providing support for clinical decision-making and computer-aided diagnosis. To be effective in addressing challenging image analysis tasks such as classification, detection, registration, and segmentation, specifically for medical imaging applications, deep learning approaches have shown significant improvement in performance. While deep learning has shown its potential in a variety of medical image analysis problems including segmentation, motion estimation, etc., generalizability is still an unsolved problem and many of these successes are achieved at the cost of a large pool of datasets. For most practical applications, getting access to a copious dataset can be very difficult, often impossible. Annotation is tedious and time-consuming. This cost is further amplified when annotation must be done by a clinical expert in medical imaging applications. Additionally, the applications of deep learning in the real-world clinical setting are still limited due to the lack of reliability caused by the limited prediction capabilities of some deep learning models. Moreover, while using a CNN in an automated image analysis pipeline, it’s critical to understand which segmentation results are problematic and require further manual examination. To this extent, the estimation of uncertainty calibration in a semi-supervised setting for medical image segmentation is still rarely reported. This thesis focuses on developing and evaluating optimized machine learning models for a variety of medical imaging applications, ranging from fully-supervised, single-task learning to semi-supervised, multi-task learning that makes efficient use of annotated training data. The contributions of this dissertation are as follows: (1) developing a fully-supervised, single-task transfer learning for the surgical instrument segmentation from laparoscopic images; and (2) utilizing supervised, single-task, transfer learning for segmenting and digitally removing the surgical instruments from endoscopic/laparoscopic videos to allow the visualization of the anatomy being obscured by the tool. The tool removal algorithms use a tool segmentation mask and either instrument-free reference frames or previous instrument-containing frames to fill in (inpaint) the instrument segmentation mask; (3) developing fully-supervised, single-task learning via efficient weight pruning and learned group convolution for accurate left ventricle (LV), right ventricle (RV) blood pool and myocardium localization and segmentation from 4D cine cardiac MR images; (4) demonstrating the use of our fully-supervised memory-efficient model to generate dynamic patient-specific right ventricle (RV) models from cine cardiac MRI dataset via an unsupervised learning-based deformable registration field; and (5) integrating a Monte Carlo dropout into our fully-supervised memory-efficient model with inherent uncertainty estimation, with the overall goal to estimate the uncertainty associated with the obtained segmentation and error, as a means to flag regions that feature less than optimal segmentation results; (6) developing semi-supervised, single-task learning via self-training (through meta pseudo-labeling) in concert with a Teacher network that instructs the Student network by generating pseudo-labels given unlabeled input data; (7) proposing largely-unsupervised, multi-task learning to demonstrate the power of a simple combination of a disentanglement block, variational autoencoder (VAE), generative adversarial network (GAN), and a conditioning layer-based reconstructor for performing two of the foremost critical tasks in medical imaging — segmentation of cardiac structures and reconstruction of the cine cardiac MR images; (8) demonstrating the use of 3D semi-supervised, multi-task learning for jointly learning multiple tasks in a single backbone module – uncertainty estimation, geometric shape generation, and cardiac anatomical structure segmentation of the left atrial cavity from 3D Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance (GE-MR) images. This dissertation summarizes the impact of the contributions of our work in terms of demonstrating the adaptation and use of deep learning architectures featuring different levels of supervision to build a variety of image segmentation tools and techniques that can be used across a wide spectrum of medical image computing applications centered on facilitating and promoting the wide-spread computer-integrated diagnosis and therapy data science

    Semantic Instance Annotation of Street Scenes by 3D to 2D Label Transfer

    Semantic annotations are vital for training models for object recognition, semantic segmentation or scene understanding. Unfortunately, pixelwise annotation of images at very large scale is labor-intensive and only little labeled data is available, particularly at instance level and for street scenes. In this paper, we propose to tackle this problem by lifting the semantic instance labeling task from 2D into 3D. Given reconstructions from stereo or laser data, we annotate static 3D scene elements with rough bounding primitives and develop a model which transfers this information into the image domain. We leverage our method to obtain 2D labels for a novel suburban video dataset which we have collected, resulting in 400k semantic and instance image annotations. A comparison of our method to state-of-the-art label transfer baselines reveals that 3D information enables more efficient annotation while at the same time resulting in improved accuracy and time-coherent labels.Comment: 10 pages in Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), 201

    Report on shape analysis and matching and on semantic matching

    In GRAVITATE, two disparate specialities will come together in one working platform for the archaeologist: the fields of shape analysis, and of metadata search. These fields are relatively disjoint at the moment, and the research and development challenge of GRAVITATE is precisely to merge them for our chosen tasks. As shown in chapter 7 the small amount of literature that already attempts join 3D geometry and semantics is not related to the cultural heritage domain. Therefore, after the project is done, there should be a clear ‘before-GRAVITATE’ and ‘after-GRAVITATE’ split in how these two aspects of a cultural heritage artefact are treated.This state of the art report (SOTA) is ‘before-GRAVITATE’. Shape analysis and metadata description are described separately, as currently in the literature and we end the report with common recommendations in chapter 8 on possible or plausible cross-connections that suggest themselves. These considerations will be refined for the Roadmap for Research deliverable.Within the project, a jargon is developing in which ‘geometry’ stands for the physical properties of an artefact (not only its shape, but also its colour and material) and ‘metadata’ is used as a general shorthand for the semantic description of the provenance, location, ownership, classification, use etc. of the artefact. As we proceed in the project, we will find a need to refine those broad divisions, and find intermediate classes (such as a semantic description of certain colour patterns), but for now the terminology is convenient – not least because it highlights the interesting area where both aspects meet.On the ‘geometry’ side, the GRAVITATE partners are UVA, Technion, CNR/IMATI; on the metadata side, IT Innovation, British Museum and Cyprus Institute; the latter two of course also playing the role of internal users, and representatives of the Cultural Heritage (CH) data and target user’s group. CNR/IMATI’s experience in shape analysis and similarity will be an important bridge between the two worlds for geometry and metadata. The authorship and styles of this SOTA reflect these specialisms: the first part (chapters 3 and 4) purely by the geometry partners (mostly IMATI and UVA), the second part (chapters 5 and 6) by the metadata partners, especially IT Innovation while the joint overview on 3D geometry and semantics is mainly by IT Innovation and IMATI.
