Fault Detection and RUL Estimation for Railway HVAC Systems Using a Hybrid Model-Based Approach
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems installed in a passenger train
carriage are critical systems, whose failures can affect people or the environment. This, together
with restrictive regulations, results in the replacement of critical components in initial stages of
degradation, as well as a lack of data on advanced stages of degradation. This paper proposes a
hybrid model-based approach (HyMA) to overcome the lack of failure data on a HVAC system
installed in a passenger train carriage. The proposed HyMA combines physics-based models with
data-driven models to deploy diagnostic and prognostic processes for a complex and critical system.
The physics-based model generates data on healthy and faulty working conditions; the faults are
generated in different levels of degradation and can appear individually or together. A fusion of
synthetic data and measured data is used to train, validate, and test the proposed hybrid model
(HyM) for fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) of the HVAC system. The model obtains an accuracy
of 92.60%. In addition, the physics-based model generates run-to-failure data for the HVAC air
filter to develop a remaining useful life (RUL) prediction model, the RUL estimations performed
obtained an accuracy in the range of 95.21–97.80% Both models obtain a remarkable accuracy. The
development presented will result in a tool which provides relevant information on the health state
of the HVAC system, extends its useful life, reduces its life cycle cost, and improves its reliability and
availability; thus enhancing the sustainability of the system.Research was funded by the Basque Government, through ELKARTEK (ref. KK-2020/00049) funding grant
Machine-learning-based condition assessment of gas turbine: a review
Condition monitoring, diagnostics, and prognostics are key factors in today’s competitive industrial sector. Equipment digitalisation has increased the amount of available data throughout the industrial process, and the development of new and more advanced techniques has significantly improved the performance of industrial machines. This publication focuses on surveying the last decade of evolution of condition monitoring, diagnostic, and prognostic techniques using machinelearning (ML)-based models for the improvement of the operational performance of gas turbines. A comprehensive review of the literature led to a performance assessment of ML models and their applications to gas turbines, as well as a discussion of the major challenges and opportunities for the research on these kind of engines. This paper further concludes that the combination of the available information captured through the collectors and the ML techniques shows promising results in increasing the accuracy, robustness, precision, and generalisation of industrial gas turbine equipment. This research was funded by Siemens Energy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Damage identification in structural health monitoring: a brief review from its implementation to the Use of data-driven applications
The damage identification process provides relevant information about the current state of a structure under inspection, and it can be approached from two different points of view. The first approach uses data-driven algorithms, which are usually associated with the collection of data using sensors. Data are subsequently processed and analyzed. The second approach uses models to analyze information about the structure. In the latter case, the overall performance of the approach is associated with the accuracy of the model and the information that is used to define it. Although both approaches are widely used, data-driven algorithms are preferred in most cases because they afford the ability to analyze data acquired from sensors and to provide a real-time solution for decision making; however, these approaches involve high-performance processors due to the high computational cost. As a contribution to the researchers working with data-driven algorithms and applications, this work presents a brief review of data-driven algorithms for damage identification in structural health-monitoring applications. This review covers damage detection, localization, classification, extension, and prognosis, as well as the development of smart structures. The literature is systematically reviewed according to the natural steps of a structural health-monitoring system. This review also includes information on the types of sensors used as well as on the development of data-driven algorithms for damage identification.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Soft Computing Techniques and Their Applications in Intel-ligent Industrial Control Systems: A Survey
Soft computing involves a series of methods that are compatible with imprecise information and complex human cognition. In the face of industrial control problems, soft computing techniques show strong intelligence, robustness and cost-effectiveness. This study dedicates to providing a survey on soft computing techniques and their applications in industrial control systems. The methodologies of soft computing are mainly classified in terms of fuzzy logic, neural computing, and genetic algorithms. The challenges surrounding modern industrial control systems are summarized based on the difficulties in information acquisition, the difficulties in modeling control rules, the difficulties in control system optimization, and the requirements for robustness. Then, this study reviews soft-computing-related achievements that have been developed to tackle these challenges. Afterwards, we present a retrospect of practical industrial control applications in the fields including transportation, intelligent machines, process industry as well as energy engineering. Finally, future research directions are discussed from different perspectives. This study demonstrates that soft computing methods can endow industry control processes with many merits, thus having great application potential. It is hoped that this survey can serve as a reference and provide convenience for scholars and practitioners in the fields of industrial control and computer science

Context-awareness for mobile sensing: a survey and future directions
The evolution of smartphones together with increasing computational power have empowered developers to create innovative context-aware applications for recognizing user related social and cognitive activities in any situation and at any location. The existence and awareness of the context provides the capability of being conscious of physical environments or situations around mobile device users. This allows network services to respond proactively and intelligently based on such awareness. The key idea behind context-aware applications is to encourage users to collect, analyze and share local sensory knowledge in the purpose for a large scale community use by creating a smart network. The desired network is capable of making autonomous logical decisions to actuate environmental objects, and also assist individuals. However, many open challenges remain, which are mostly arisen due to the middleware services provided in mobile devices have limited resources in terms of power, memory and bandwidth. Thus, it becomes critically important to study how the drawbacks can be elaborated and resolved, and at the same time better understand the opportunities for the research community to contribute to the context-awareness. To this end, this paper surveys the literature over the period of 1991-2014 from the emerging concepts to applications of context-awareness in mobile platforms by providing up-to-date research and future research directions. Moreover, it points out the challenges faced in this regard and enlighten them by proposing possible solutions
