Ausubel's meaningful learning re-visited
This review provides a critique of David Ausubelâs theory of meaningful learning and the use of advance organizers in teaching. It takes into account the developments in cognition and neuroscience which have taken place in the 50 or so years since he advanced his ideas, developments which challenge our understanding of cognitive structure and the recall of prior learning. These include (i) how effective questioning to ascertain previous knowledge necessitates in-depth Socratic dialogue; (ii) how many findings in cognition and neuroscience indicate that memory may be non-representational, thereby affecting our interpretation of student recollections; (iii) the now recognised dynamism of memory; (iv) usefully regarding concepts as abilities or simulators and skills; (v) acknowledging conscious and unconscious memory and imagery; (vi) how conceptual change involves conceptual coexistence and revision; (vii) noting linguistic and neural pathways as a result of experience and neural selection; and (viii) recommending that wider concepts of scaffolding should be adopted, particularly given the increasing focus on collaborative learning in a technological world
On the Mechanism of Building Core Competencies: a Study of Chinese Multinational Port Enterprises
This study aims to explore how Chinese multinational port enterprises (MNPEs) build
their core competencies. Core competencies are firmsâspecial capabilities and sources
to gain sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in marketplace, and the concept led
to extensive research and debates. However, few studies include inquiries about the
mechanisms of building core competencies in the context of Chinese MNPEs.
Accordingly, answers were sought to three research questions:
1. What are the core competencies of the Chinese MNPEs?
2. What are the mechanisms that the Chinese MNPEs use to build their core
competencies?
3. What are the paths that the Chinese MNPEs pursue to build their resources bases?
The study adopted a multiple-case study design, focusing on building mechanism of
core competencies with RBV. It selected purposively five Chinese leading MNPEs
and three industry associations as Case Companies.
The study revealed three main findings. First, it identified three generic core
competencies possessed by Case Companies, i.e., innovation in business models and
operations, utilisation of technologies, and acquisition of strategic resources. Second,
it developed the conceptual framework of the Mechanism of Building Core
Competencies (MBCC), which is a process of change of collective learning in
effective and efficient utilization of resources of a firm in response to critical events.
Third, it proposed three paths to build core competencies, i.e., enhancing collective
learning, selecting sustainable processes, and building resource base.
The study contributes to the knowledge of core competencies and RBV in three ways:
(1) presenting three generic core competencies of the Chinese MNPEs, (2) proposing
a new conceptual framework to explain how Chinese MNPEs build their core
competencies, (3) suggesting a solid anchor point (MBCC) to explain the links among
resources, core competencies, and SCA. The findings set benchmarks for Chinese
logistics industry and provide guidelines to build core competencies

Co-design As Healing: Exploring The Experiences Of Participants Facing Mental Health Problems
This thesis is an exploration of the healing role of co-design in mental health. Although co-design projects conducted within mental health settings are rising, existing literature tends to focus on the object of design and its outcomes while the experiences of participants per se remain largely unexplored. The guiding research question of this study is not how we design things that improve mental health, but how co-designing, as an act, might do so.
The thesis presents two projects that were organized in collaboration with the mental health charity Islington Mind and the Psychosis Therapy Project (PTP) in London.
The project at Islington Mind used a structured design process inviting participants to design for wellbeing. A case study analysis provides insights on how participants were impacted, summarizing key challenges and opportunities.
The design at PTP worked towards creating a collective brief in an emergent fashion, finally culminating in a board game. The experiences of participants were explored through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), using semi-structured interview data. The analysis served to identify key themes characterising the experience of co-design such as contributing, connecting, thinking and intentioning. In addition, a mixed-methods analysis of questionnaires and interview data exploring participants' wellbeing, showed that all participants who engaged fairly consistently in the project improved after the project ended, although some participants' scores returned to baseline six months later.
Reflecting on both projects, an approach to facilitation within mental health is outlined, detailing how the dimensions of weaving and layered participation, nurturing mattering and facilitating attitudes interlace. This contribution raises awareness of tacit dimensions in the practice of facilitation, articulating the nuances of how to encourage and sustain meaningful and ethical engagement and offering insights into a range of tools. It highlights the importance of remaining reflexive in relation to attitudes and emotions and discusses practical methodological and ethical challenges and ways to resolve them which can be of benefit to researchers embarking on a similar journey.
The thesis also offers detailed insights on how methodologies from different fields were integrated into a whole, arguing for transparency and reflexivity about epistemological assumptions, and how underlying paradigms shift in an interdisciplinary context.
Based on the overall findings, the thesis makes a case for considering design as healing (or a designerly way of healing), highlighting implications at a systems, social and individual level. It makes an original contribution to our understanding of design, highlighting its healing character, and proposes a new way to support mental health. The participants in this study not only had increased their own wellbeing through co-designing, but were also empowered and contributed towards healing the world. Hence, the thesis argues for a unique, holistic perspective of design and mental health, recognizing the interconnectedness of the individual, social and systemic dimensions of the healing processes that are ignited
From wallet to mobile: exploring how mobile payments create customer value in the service experience
This study explores how mobile proximity payments (MPP) (e.g., Apple Pay) create customer value in the service experience compared to traditional payment methods (e.g. cash and card). The main objectives were firstly to understand how customer value manifests as an outcome in the MPP service experience, and secondly to understand how the customer activities in the process of using MPP create customer value. To achieve these objectives a conceptual framework is built upon the Grönroos-Voima Value Model (Grönroos and Voima, 2013), and uses the Theory of Consumption Value (Sheth et al., 1991) to determine the customer value constructs for MPP, which is complimented with Script theory (Abelson, 1981) to determine the value creating activities the consumer does in the process of paying with MPP.
The study uses a sequential exploratory mixed methods design, wherein the first qualitative stage uses two methods, self-observations (n=200) and semi-structured interviews (n=18). The subsequent second quantitative stage uses an online survey (n=441) and Structural Equation Modelling analysis to further examine the relationships and effect between the value creating activities and customer value constructs identified in stage one. The academic contributions include the development of a model of mobile payment services value creation in the service experience, introducing the concept of in-use barriers which occur after adoption and constrains the consumers existing use of MPP, and revealing the importance of the mobile in-hand momentary condition as an antecedent state. Additionally, the customer value perspective of this thesis demonstrates an alternative to the dominant Information Technology approaches to researching mobile payments and broadens the view of technology from purely an object a user interacts with to an object that is immersed in consumersâ daily life
Karttatypografia: luettavuuden parantaminen kirjainmuotoilun keinoin topografisissa kartoissa
This thesis examines the legibility of type on maps and aims to find out ways to improve it through type design. As type often is an integral part of maps â something that helps the map user navigate, understand, and perceive a wide range of information in an effective way â type design and legibility must be regarded as important design elements. However, even though cartography and typography have extensive theoretical bases, the subject of legibility has not been comprehensively researched in cartographic context. Thus, by combining type design theory and scientific legibility studies with cartographic theory, the legibility of type on maps could be improved.
The topic is first studied by an extensive literature review to cover existing concepts and theories of cartography, cartographic typography, and typography. After a competent knowledge basis of these concepts and theories is acquired, the findings are utilised in the design component. The design component is a type family designed specifically to be used with topographic maps: it consists of two elements, a project description that follows the design process of the type family, relating design choices to the theoretical findings and perspectives presented in the literary review, and the finished type family. In conclusion of the design component, several visual studies are made both to compare the design component (type family) to other relevant typefaces, and to validate the possible functionality of the design component in the chosen cartographic application (topographic map).
A broad understanding of the topics of the literature review was formed. Cartographic theory observed the overall nature of maps and specified the various map elements and their intended uses. Cartographic typography deepened the understanding of type on maps â it highlighted the specific needs that must be taken into consideration, demonstrated the diversity of typographic situations that might occur, and presented a large set of guidelines to help the mapmaker to achieve better results. Typography and type design focused on the micro-level of type: how the minor design choices affect the whole, and furthermore, through legibility studies, validated certain views and brought new topics into consideration. By combining theoretical literature from these domains, this thesis helped to form a foundation for an improved framework for type de-sign for (topographic) maps. Furthermore, the domains of cartographic typography and typography and type design gave clear suggestions on how the legibility of type on topographic maps can be improved: legibility of type in this context constitutes from multiple components that must be both taken into consideration and be applied to processes of mapmaking and type design.TĂ€ssĂ€ opinnĂ€ytetyössĂ€ tutkitaan karttatypografiaa ja pyritÀÀn löytĂ€mÀÀn keinoja parantaa luettavuutta kirjainmuotoilun keinoin. Teksti on usein elimellinen osa karttoja: se helpottaa kartan kĂ€yttĂ€jÀÀ navigoimaan ja sisĂ€istĂ€mÀÀn suuren mÀÀrĂ€n informaatiota tehokkaasti. SiispĂ€ kirjainmuotoilua ja luettavuutta tulee pitÀÀ tĂ€rkeinĂ€ karttasuunnittelun työkaluina. Vaikka sekĂ€ kartografiassa ettĂ€ typografiassa on olemassa laajat teoreettiset perustat, luettavuutta ei ole kattavasti tutkittu kartografisessa kontekstissa. YhdistĂ€mĂ€llĂ€ kirjainmuotoilun ja tieteelliset luettavuustutkimukset kartografiseen teoriaan, karttatekstien luettavuutta voidaan parantaa.
Aluksi tutustutaan olemassa oleviin konsepteihin ja kartografisiin teorioihin kattavan kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla. Kun tarpeellinen tietopohja on rakennettu, saavutettua tietÀmystÀ hyödynnetÀÀn opinnÀytetyön projektiosassa, joka tÀssÀ tapauksessa on topografisten karttojen yhteydessÀ kÀytettÀvÀ kirjainperhe. Projektiosio on kaksijakoinen ja pitÀÀ sisÀllÀÀn sekÀ valmiin kirjainperheen, ettÀ projektikuvauksen. Projektikuvaus seuraa suunnitteluprosessia ja peilaa tehtyjÀ valintoja kirjallisuuskatsauksessa esiteltyihin löydöksiin. Projektiosion pÀÀtelmÀssÀ tutkitaan visuaalisesti kirjainperheen toimintaa ja kÀyttökelpoisuutta topografisessa karttaympÀristössÀ, sekÀ verrataan kirjainperheen toimivuutta suhteessa muihin kirjaintyyppeihin.
Tutkimuksen perusteella muodostuu laaja ymmĂ€rrys aiheesta. Kartografinen teoria valottaa yleisesti karttojen olemusta ja toimintaa, sekĂ€ esittelee erilaisia karttalementtejĂ€ ja niiden toimintatapoja. Karttatypografian teoria syventÀÀ ymmĂ€rrystĂ€ tekstin kĂ€yttĂ€ytymisestĂ€ karttaympĂ€ristössĂ€, esittelee karttatypografian erityispiirteitĂ€, ja tarjoaa laajan karttatypografisen ohjeiston. Typografian ja kirjainmuotoilun teoria keskittyy mikrotason aiheisiin: kuinka vĂ€hĂ€pĂ€töisiltĂ€ vaikuttavat suunnitteluvalinnat vaikuttavat kokonaisuuteen, ja kuinka luettavuustutkimukset auttavat nĂ€kemÀÀn asioita uudessa valossa. TĂ€mĂ€ opinnĂ€ytetyö auttaa parantamaan kirjainmuotoilua (topografisessa) karttaympĂ€ristössĂ€ yhdistĂ€mĂ€llĂ€ edellĂ€ mainittujen alojen teorioita keskenÀÀn ja pohjustamalla paranneltuja suunniteluvalintoja. Yhdistetty teoria viittaa selkeĂ€sti siihen, ettĂ€ luettavuus karttaympĂ€ristössĂ€ koostuu lukuisista osatekijöistĂ€ â nĂ€mĂ€ osatekijĂ€t tulee ymmĂ€rtÀÀ, ottaa huomioon, ja soveltaa sekĂ€ karttojen ettĂ€ niille suunniteltujen kirjaintyyppien suunnitteluprosesseissa
Conscience and Consciousness: British Theatre and Human Rights.
This research project investigates a paradigm of human rights theatre. Through the lens of performance and theatre-making, this thesis explores how we came to represent, speak about, discuss, and own human rights in Britain. My framework of âhuman rights theatreâ proposes three distinctive features: firstly, such works dramatise real-world issues and highlights the role of the state in endangering its citizens; secondly, ethical ruptures are encountered within and without the drama, and finally, these performances characteristically aspire to produce an activist effect on the collective behaviours of the audience.
This thesis interrogates the strategies theatre-makers use to articulate human rights concerns or to animate human rights intent. The selected case-studies for this investigation are ice&fireâs testimonial project, Actors for Human Rights; Badac Theatre; Jonathan Holmesâ work as director of Jericho House; Cardboard Citizensâ youth participation programme, ACT NOW; and Tony Cealyâs Black Menâs Consortium. Deliberately selecting companies and performance events that have received limited critical attention, my methodology constellates case-studies through original interviews, durational observation of creative working methods and proximate descriptions of practice.
The thesis is interested in the experience of coming to âconsciousnessâ through human rights theatre, an awakening to the impacts of rights infringements and rights claiming. I explore consciousness as a processual, procedural, and durational happening in these performance events. I explore the âĂŠffectâ of activist art and examine the ways in which makers of human rights theatre aim to amplify both affective and effective qualities in their work. My thesis also considers the articulation of activist purpose and the campaigning intent of the selected theatre-makers and explores how their activism is animated in their productions. Through the rich seam of discussion generated by the identification and exploration of the traits of a distinctive human rights theatre, I affirm the generative value of this typological enquiry

Pressure training in sport : Factors to enhance design and delivery of applied interventions
This thesis examined how sport psychologists can design and deliver pressure training (PT) to maximise PTâs impact on performance in sport. Adopting a pragmatic approach to research, four studies were conducted to provide practitioners with guidance for conducting PT. The first study was a meta-analysis of previous PT interventions. PT had a moderate positive effect on performance under pressure when compared to training without pressure. Building on Stoker et al.âs (2016) framework for creating pressure, the second study identified properties of pressure manipulations that international-level athletes and sport psychologists had found to be effective. This study also explored the specific benefits of PT that lead to improved performance. In the third study, athletes and sport psychologists also described effective delivery of PT. Key findings included processes such as collaboration and integration of PT into training sessions, and these processes may counter risks that PT could pose to athletesâ wellbeing. The fourth study applied the previous findings to a PT intervention with a professional womenâs basketball team. Results further extended knowledge on creating pressure and delivering PT. Specifically, pressure may be created more effectively through negative, rather than positive, consequences that have meaningful implications for athletes. This study also highlighted that fully integrating PT into training can include coaches reinforcing pressure manipulations and supporting performance under pressure. Additional applied implications of this thesis include PTâs potential to complement mental skills training and the need to distinguish PT from training that simulates other aspects of competition. Future research can investigate the training environments and characteristics of individuals that are conducive to effective PT. More knowledge on creating pressure is especially needed for team sports because of individual differences within a team. Studies can also test the properties of pressure manipulations that were explored qualitatively in this thesis
