The Role of Deontic Logic in the Specification of Information Systems
In this paper we discuss the role that deontic logic plays in the specification of information systems, either because constraints on the systems directly concern norms or, and even more importantly, system constraints are considered ideal but violable (so-called `softÂż constraints).\ud
To overcome the traditional problems with deontic logic (the so-called paradoxes), we first state the importance of distinguishing between ought-to-be and ought-to-do constraints and next focus on the most severe paradox, the so-called Chisholm paradox, involving contrary-to-duty norms. We present a multi-modal extension of standard deontic logic (SDL) to represent the ought-to-be version of the Chisholm set properly. For the ought-to-do variant we employ a reduction to dynamic logic, and show how the Chisholm set can be treated adequately in this setting. Finally we discuss a way of integrating both ought-to-be and ought-to-do reasoning, enabling one to draw conclusions from ought-to-be constraints to ought-to-do ones, and show by an example the use(fulness) of this

CHR Grammars
A grammar formalism based upon CHR is proposed analogously to the way
Definite Clause Grammars are defined and implemented on top of Prolog. These
grammars execute as robust bottom-up parsers with an inherent treatment of
ambiguity and a high flexibility to model various linguistic phenomena. The
formalism extends previous logic programming based grammars with a form of
context-sensitive rules and the possibility to include extra-grammatical
hypotheses in both head and body of grammar rules. Among the applications are
straightforward implementations of Assumption Grammars and abduction under
integrity constraints for language analysis. CHR grammars appear as a powerful
tool for specification and implementation of language processors and may be
proposed as a new standard for bottom-up grammars in logic programming.

Multi-dimensional Type Theory: Rules, Categories, and Combinators for Syntax and Semantics
We investigate the possibility of modelling the syntax and semantics of
natural language by constraints, or rules, imposed by the multi-dimensional
type theory Nabla. The only multiplicity we explicitly consider is two, namely
one dimension for the syntax and one dimension for the semantics, but the
general perspective is important. For example, issues of pragmatics could be
handled as additional dimensions.
One of the main problems addressed is the rather complicated repertoire of
operations that exists besides the notion of categories in traditional Montague
grammar. For the syntax we use a categorial grammar along the lines of Lambek.
For the semantics we use so-called lexical and logical combinators inspired by
work in natural logic. Nabla provides a concise interpretation and a sequent
calculus as the basis for implementations.Comment: 20 page
A preliminary bibliography on focus
[I]n its present form, the bibliography contains approximately 1100 entries. Bibliographical work is never complete, and the present one is still modest in a number of respects. It is not annotated, and it still contains a lot of mistakes and inconsistencies. It has nevertheless reached a stage which justifies considering the possibility of making it available to the public. The first step towards this is its pre-publication in the form of this working paper. [âŠ]

Demonstratives, definite descriptions and non-redundancy
In some sentences, demonstratives can be substituted with definite descriptions without any change in meaning. In light of this, many have maintained that demonstratives are just a type of definite description.
However, several theorists have drawn attention to a range of cases where definite descriptions are acceptable, but their demonstrative counterparts are not. Some have tried to account for this data by appealing to presupposition. I argue that such presuppositional approaches are problematic, and present a pragmatic account of the target contrasts. On this approach, demonstratives take two arguments and generally require that the first, covert argument is non-redundant with respect to the second, overt argument. I derive this condition through an economy principle discussed by Schlenker (2005)

This book consists mainly of revised papers that were presented at the Agents for Educational Games and Simulation (AEGS) workshop held on May 2, 2011, as part of the Autonomous Agents and MultiAgent Systems (AAMAS) conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The 12 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from various submissions.
