    ENABLING RISK-AWARE ENTERPRISE MODELING USING SEMANTIC ANNOTATIONS AND VISUAL RULES

    The engagement in professional risk management is today a fact for most large organizations. In order to satisfy regulation and auditing requirements, an important step thereby is the identification and documentation of risks in an organization and the definition of measures for their mitigation. Thereby, the use of enterprise models provides the foundation for a systematic and holistic analysis of processes, organizational structures and IT systems. In the approach at hand we build upon the SeMFIS approach for semantic annotations of enterprise models with concepts from an OWL2 ontology. By providing an ontology for representing risks and mitigation measures, this additional information can be represented through annotations in arbitrary types of enterprise models without having to adapt the originally used modeling language. In addition, the approach provides a visual modeling language for representing rules according to the SWRL specification. This permits to process the semantic information provided by the annotations. The usage of the approach is illustrated through an example from the domain of risk-aware business process management. Upon the representation of risks in business processes using the semantic annotation approach, it is shown how SWRL rules can be used to automatically generate configurable risk reports

    CODIFICATION OF KNOWLEDGE IN BUSINESS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

    In times of globalization, new technologies and high market transparency, companies search for ways to raise the efficiency of their business processes and achieve long-term customer relationships. Therefore enterprises are strongly devoted to business process improvement (BPI) initiatives. However, in times of globally spanning inter-organizational business processes, conducting BPI initiatives is particularly challenging du to the necessary diverse and distributed knowledge. Successful BPI projects require the participation of a variety of employees who are directly involved in a business process. The employees have tacit process knowledge that needs to be transformed into explicit knowledge to derive improvement opportunities in a BPI project. To reach this, a set of easy to understand and well-structured BPI techniqus is required to encourage employees to participate in corresponding initiatives. Further, the codification of the results gained in such initiatives is decisive to enable their proper documentation, communication and processing. \ \ The paper at hand introduces a BPI roadmap for coordinating the structured use of BPI techniqus in a project. The roadmap is based upon a set of formal conceptual model types for codifying the results generated by each techniqu. In addition, reports are specified that process the model information and facilitate the communication and documentation of the results. The presented approach thus contributes to the systematic transformation of employees´ tacit process knowledge to explicit knowledge in the course of BPI initiatives. By applying the roadmap in a use case, its benefits for BPI initiatives are illustrated.

    AN APPROACH FOR ANALYZING THE EFFECTS OF RISKS ON BUSINESS PROCESSES USING SEMANTIC ANNOTATIONS

    The management of risks has gained a lot of attention in the last years. Among the current challenges in this domain are the integration of risk management in the strategic planning and performance management across business units and organizational structures, the assessment of a company’s risk bearing capacity, and the improvement of the methods of risk measurement. In order to support the elicitation of risks in business processes, measure their impact on a company’s return and provide reports for regulatory authorities, it can be reverted to technology-oriented knowledge management. In this context we propose an approach that uses semantically annotated models to represent the influence of risks on business activities based on the concepts provided by a risk knowledge base. By transferring the annotated model information to the knowledge base, inference rules can be applied to analyze the effects of risks on the business processes during subsequent capacity simulations. For a first evaluation the approach has been implemented using the ADOxx meta modeling platform, the Protégé ontology management toolkit and the Jess rule engine. Finally, the use of the implementation is shortly illustrated by reverting to a sample business process from the domain of banking

    Toward an Adaptive Enterprise Modelling Platform

    For the past three decades, enterprise modelling (EM) has been emerging as a significant yet complex paradigm to tackle holistic systematic enterprise analysis and design. With a high fluctuation in the global economy, industrial stability and technology shift, the necessity of such paradigms becomes crucial in determining the decisions that an enterprise can make for surviving in such a highly dynamic business ecosystem. EM practices have focused for a long time, on the design-time of enterprise systems. Recently, there has been a rapid development in data analytics, machine learning and intelligent systems from which an EM platform can benefit. EM needs to cope with the new changes in both business and technology; it should also help architects to determine optimum decisions and reduce complexity in technical infrastructure. In this paper, the author discusses several challenges facing enterprise modelling practices and offers an architectural notion for future development focusing on the requirements of a platform that can be called intelligent and adaptive

    Meta Modeling for Business Process Improvement

    Conducting business process improvement (BPI) initiatives is a topic of high priority for today’s companies. However, performing BPI projects has become challenging. This is due to rapidly changing customer requirements and an increase of inter-organizational business processes, which need to be considered from an end-to-end perspective. In addition, traditional BPI approaches are more and more perceived as overly complex and too resource-consuming in practice. Against this background, the paper proposes a BPI roadmap, which is an approach for systematically performing BPI projects and serves practitioners’ needs for manageable BPI methods. Based on this BPI roadmap, a domain-specific conceptual modeling method (DSMM) has been developed. The DSMM supports the efficient documentation and communication of the results that emerge during the application of the roadmap. Thus, conceptual modeling acts as a means for purposefully codifying the outcomes of a BPI project. Furthermore, a corresponding software prototype has been implemented using a meta modeling platform to assess the technical feasibility of the approach. Finally, the usability of the prototype has been empirically evaluated

    From Expert Discipline to Common Practice: A Vision and Research Agenda for Extending the Reach of Enterprise Modeling

    The benefits of enterprise modeling (EM) and its contribution to organizational tasks are largely undisputed in business and information systems engineering. EM as a discipline has been around for several decades but is typically performed by a limited number of people in organizations with an affinity to modeling. What is captured in models is only a fragment of what ought to be captured. Thus, this research note argues that EM is far from its maximum potential. Many people develop some kind of model in their local practice without thinking about it consciously. Exploiting the potential of this “grass roots modeling” could lead to groundbreaking innovations. The aim is to investigate integration of the established practices of modeling with local practices of creating and using model-like artifacts of relevance for the overall organization.     A Development Method for the Conceptual Design of Multi-View Modeling Tools with an Emphasis on Consistency Requirements

    The main objective of this thesis is to bridge the gap between modeling method experts on the one side and tool developers on the other. More precisely, the focus is on the specification of requirements for multi-view modeling tools. In this regard, the thesis introduces a methodological approach that supports the specification of conceptual designs for multi-view modeling tools in a stepwise manner: the MuVieMoT approach. MuVieMoT utilizes generic multi-view modeling concepts and the model-driven engineering paradigm to establish an overarching specification of multi-view modeling tools with an emphasis on consistency requirements. The approach builds on and extends the theoretical foundation of metamodeling and multi-view modeling: generic multi-view modeling concepts, integrated multi-view modeling approaches, and possibilities for formalized modeling method specifications. Applicability and utility of MuVieMoT are evaluated using an illustrative scenario, therefore specifying a conceptual design for a multi-view modeling tool for the Semantic Object Model enterprise modeling method. The thesis moreover introduces the MuVieMoT modeling environment, enabling the efficient application of the approach as well as the model-driven development of initial multi-view modeling tools based on the conceptual models created with MuVieMoT. Consequently, the approach fosters an intersubjective and unambiguous understanding of the tool requirements between method experts and tool developers

    Construction of Design Science Research Questions

    Posing research questions represents a fundamental step to guide and direct how researchers develop knowledge in research. In design science research (DSR), researchers need to pose research questions to define the scope and the modes of inquiry, characterize the artifacts, and communicate the contributions. Despite the importance of research questions, research provides few guidelines on how to construct suitable DSR research questions. We fill this gap by exploring ways of constructing DSR research questions and analyzing the research questions in a sample of 104 DSR publications. We found that about two-thirds of the analyzed DSR publications actually used research questions to link their problem statements to research approaches and that most questions focused on solving problems. Based on our analysis, we derive a typology of DSR question formulation to provide guidelines and patterns that help researchers formulate research questions when conducting their DSR projects

    Über die Anwendung des service-orientierten Architekturstils auf heterogene Anwendungslandschaften

    This thesis investigates the application of the service-oriented architectural style in the context of industrial enterprises. This style provides a commonly perceived paradigm for organizing distributed software systems. However, beyond general attention to this style, there are only few descriptions of the difference between service orientation and more mature styles, such as component orientation. This dissertation argues that the service-oriented style is an approach that centralizes control over distributed functionality that is provided by the application systems of an organization. This means that service orientation is a paradigm for application integration. Moreover, we argue that it is not possible to fully formalize the inherent principles of service orientation as part of an architectural style description. In fact, soft design principles are a differentiator of this style. These principles, however, are rarely applied in the context of industrial enterprises. This is why we analyze how such design principles could be objectively described and what attention should be paid to them. This analysis is performed by categorizing the potential benefits of this style and assigning the respective underlying principles to the identified benefits. Subsequently, a reference architecture is defined on the basis of these findings. This architecture focuses on structuring service-oriented applications - so-called composite applications. In order to apply the defined reference architecture in the context of actual projects, we describe a design methodology for composite applications. This design methodology focuses on using business processes for designing various types of services and on describing their interconnections by the reference architecture. To achieve this, a service design algorithm is included that derives services from business processes by incorporating the results of a statistical analysis of service design principles. The result of this methodology is a platform-independent design of a composite application. It considers the restrictions of the application landscape in which a composite will be deployed. To permit the realization of composite applications, we informally map the platform-independent reference architecture to a platform that is widely used in industrial enterprises. This mapping is, together with the design methodology and the reference architecture, applied to an industry-scale use case. This way, the applicability of the concepts is demonstrated.Diese Dissertation untersucht, wie der service-orientierte Architekturstil von großen Konzernen angewandt werden kann. Dieser Architekturstil strukturiert verteilte Systeme. Neben allgemeiner Aufmerksamkeit sind jedoch nur wenige Beschreibungen verfügbar, die zeigen, wie sich dieser Stil von anderen - so z.B. von dem der Komponentenorientierung - absetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt, dass der service-orientierte Stil ein Ansatz zur Kontrollzentralisierung ist. Dabei zentralisiert er die Kontrolle über die Funktionalität, die von den Applikationssystemen einer Organisation bereitgestellt wird. Daher kann er auch als Integrationsansatz verstanden werden. Zusätzlich ist es nicht möglich, alle Prinzipien des service-orientierten Stils als Architekturstil zu beschreiben. Tatsächlich stellen weiche Designprinzipien das Alleinstellungsmerkmal dieses Stils dar. Diese Prinzipien werden allerdings von großen Organisationen kaum angewendet. Diese Dissertation untersucht deshalb den Stellenwert der einzelnen Prinzipien und beschreibt, wie sie objektiviert werden können. In dieser Untersuchung werden die möglichen Vorteile dieses Architekturstils zunächst kategorisiert. Danach werden diesen potentiellen Vorteilen die Prinzipien zugewiesen, die zu ihrer Erlangung beitragen. Auf Basis dieser Analyse wird danach eine Referenzarchitektur erstellt. Diese Architektur beschreibt eine Struktur für service-orientierte Applikationen, so genannte composite applications, die es erlaubt weiche Designprinzipien zu berücksichtigen. Um diese Referenzarchitektur auf reelle Problemstellungen anwenden zu können, wird außerdem eine Methodik zum Design von composite applications beschrieben. Im Fokus dieser Methodik steht es, Geschäftsprozesse als Ausgangspunkt für das Design von Services zu benutzen und deren Verbindungen zu beschreiben. Dabei orientiert sie sich an den möglichen Verbindungen, die von der Referenzarchitektur definiert werden. Um dies zu erreichen ist außerdem ein Algorithmus für das Design von Services enthalten. Dieser Algorithmus leitet aus Geschäftsprozessen Services ab und berücksichtigt dabei die Ergebnisse einer statistischen Auswertung, die die Wiederverwendbarkeit von Services als Untersuchungsziel hat. Das Ergebnis dieser Methodik ist das plattformunabhängige Design einer composite application. Dieses Design ist an einem Geschäftsprozess orientiert, berücksichtigt aber auch die Einschränkungen der Systemlandschaft, in der die Applikation betrieben werden soll. Um auf der Basis eines solchen Designs eine composite application erstellen zu können, ist weiterhin eine informelle Abbildung der plattformunabhängigen Architektur auf eine häufig eingesetzte Plattform in der Arbeit beschrieben. Zusammen mit der Methodik und der Referenzarchitektur wird diese Abbildung dann auf ein industrielles Fallbeispiel angewandt.
