    The Opportunity of Linked Data for the European Higher Education Area

    The european higher education area (EHEA) aims to create a more comparable, compatible and coherent space of Higher Education in Europe. After a decade of reforms, most of the required instruments are already in place, so the next years are key to complete the implementation and consolidation of the EHEA. However, data challenges pose a threat to pivotal EHEA processes such as credit recognition that require institutions to cooperate and integrate their datasets scattered across diverse repositories in multiple data formats. Linked Data principles and practices have the potential to address such difficulties, as demonstrated with the emergence of a global data space –the Web of Data. This paper first discusses the benefits of Linked Data for the emergent EHEA, devising a new set of Linked Data-driven scenarios that leverage current EHEA processes. Further, a set of preliminary Linked Data deployments is examined to assess the advantages and identify the challenges ahead in the EHEA landscape

    In this study, a Semantic KMS Model is formulated to support collaborative learning environment based on ontology.A comprehensive review was conducted to identify the important components of existing models in Knowledge Management (KM), KMS and semantic areas, and a survey was conducted to finalize the important components of the proposed model.As a result, the proposed semantic KMS model consisted of six important components to support collaborative works; KM Processes, Ontology-based Knowledge Model, Semantic KM Features, Knowledge Quality, System Quality and KM Goals.A prototype, called Semantic KMS for Collaborative Learning was developed to illustrate how the model components are supporting KM processes in collaborative works based on the system requirement specifications described in this paper.The required modules of the semantic KMS are described in details and the ontology-based knowledge models are also presented

    How to interact with medical terminologies? Formative usability evaluations comparing three approaches for supporting the use of MedDRA by pharmacovigilance specialists

    Background: Medical terminologies are commonly used in medicine. For instance, to answer a pharmacovigilance question, pharmacovigilance specialists (PVS) search in a pharmacovigilance database for reports in relation to a given drug. To do that, they first need to identify all MedDRA terms that might have been used to code an adverse reaction in the database, but terms may be numerous and difficult to select as they may belong to different parts of the hierarchy. In previous studies, three tools have been developed to help PVS identify and group all relevant MedDRA terms using three different approaches: forms, structured query-builder, and icons. Yet, a poor usability of the tools may increase PVS' workload and reduce their performance. This study aims to evaluate, compare and improve the three tools during two rounds of formative usability evaluation. Methods: First, a cognitive walkthrough was performed. Based on the design recommendations obtained from this evaluation, designers made modifications to their tools to improve usability. Once this re-engineering phase completed, six PVS took part in a usability test: difficulties, errors and verbalizations during their interaction with the three tools were collected. Their satisfaction was measured through the System Usability Scale. The design recommendations issued from the tests were used to adapt the tools. Results: All tools had usability problems related to the lack of guidance in the graphical user interface (e.g., unintuitive labels). In two tools, the use of the SNOMED CT to find MedDRA terms hampered their use because French PVS were not used to it. For the most obvious and common terms, the icons-based interface would appear to be more useful. For the less frequently used MedDRA terms or those distributed in different parts of the hierarchy, the structured query-builder would be preferable thanks to its great power and flexibility. The form-based tool seems to be a compromise. Conclusion: These evaluations made it possible to identify the strengths of each tool but also their weaknesses to address them before further evaluation. Next step is to assess the acceptability of tools and the expressiveness of their results to help identify and group MedDRA terms

    Design and evaluation of a learning environment to effectively provide network security skills

    Information system security and network security are topics of increasing importance in the information society. They are also topics where the adequate education of professionals requires the use of specific laboratory environments where the practical aspects of the discipline may be addressed. However, most approaches currently used are excessively static and lack the flexibility that the education requirements of security professionals demand. In this paper we present NEMESIS, a scenario generation framework for education on system and network security, which is based on virtualization technologies and has been designed to be open, distributed, modular, scalable and flexible. Finally, an example scenario is described and some results validating the benefits of its use in undergraduate computer security courses are shown.La seguridad de redes y sistemas de información es un área de importancia creciente en el ámbito de la sociedad de información. Además, constituye un tema en el que la adecuada formación de profesionales exige el uso de entornos de laboratorio específicos en los que abordar los aspectos prácticas de la disciplina. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las aproximación usadas en la actualidad son excesivamente estáticas y carecen de la flexibilidad que las exigencias de la formación de profesionales de seguridad imponente. En este artículo, presentamos NEMESIS, un entorno para la generación de escenarios para la formación en seguridad de redes y sistemas, basado en tecnologías de virtualización que ha sido diseñado para ser abierto, distribuido, modular, escalable y flexible.     La presente tesis doctoral trata de profundizar en las necesidades de desarrollo profesional docente que emanan de contextos educativos donde las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) tienen cada vez mayor presencia. A través de una aproximación cualitativa apoyada en el estudio de casos, en este trabajo se analizan los diseños y prácticas docentes con TIC de una comunidad de maestros/as de Educación Primaria. A través del proceso de investigación desarrollado, se han identificado un conjunto de rutinas o patrones pedagógicos que pueden ser considerados elementos o estrategias útiles para promover la reflexión del profesorado del profesorado en torno a sus prácticas, favoreciendo de esta manera, los procesos de innovación.Departamento de Pedagogí
