The Metaverse: Survey, Trends, Novel Pipeline Ecosystem & Future Directions
The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are
non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive
experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can
benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed,
including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art, and culture.
Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an
ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on
the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse
and lack a holistic view of the entire process. To this end, a more holistic,
multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is
required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline. To
address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline
ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications
and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user
interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps
of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact
of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial
Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on
its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies
to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions,
and monetization. Our presented study highlights the existing challenges for
each component, followed by research directions and potential solutions. To the
best of our knowledge, this survey is the most comprehensive and allows users,
scholars, and entrepreneurs to get an in-depth understanding of the Metaverse
ecosystem to find their opportunities and potentials for contribution
Bounding Box Annotation with Visible Status
Training deep-learning-based vision systems requires the manual annotation of
a significant amount of data to optimize several parameters of the deep
convolutional neural networks. Such manual annotation is highly time-consuming
and labor-intensive. To reduce this burden, a previous study presented a fully
automated annotation approach that does not require any manual intervention.
The proposed method associates a visual marker with an object and captures it
in the same image. However, because the previous method relied on moving the
object within the capturing range using a fixed-point camera, the collected
image dataset was limited in terms of capturing viewpoints. To overcome this
limitation, this study presents a mobile application-based free-viewpoint
image-capturing method. With the proposed application, users can collect
multi-view image datasets automatically that are annotated with bounding boxes
by moving the camera. However, capturing images through human involvement is
laborious and monotonous. Therefore, we propose gamified application features
to track the progress of the collection status. Our experiments demonstrated
that using the gamified mobile application for bounding box annotation, with
visible collection progress status, can motivate users to collect multi-view
object image datasets with less mental workload and time pressure in an
enjoyable manner, leading to increased engagement.Comment: 10 pages, 16 figure
Technical Dimensions of Programming Systems
Programming requires much more than just writing code in a programming language. It is usually done in the context of a stateful environment, by interacting with a system through a graphical user interface. Yet, this wide space of possibilities lacks a common structure for navigation. Work on programming systems fails to form a coherent body of research, making it hard to improve on past work and advance the state of the art.
In computer science, much has been said and done to allow comparison of programming languages, yet no similar theory exists for programming systems; we believe that programming systems deserve a theory too.
We present a framework of technical dimensions which capture the underlying characteristics of programming systems and provide a means for conceptualizing and comparing them.
We identify technical dimensions by examining past influential programming systems and reviewing their design principles, technical capabilities, and styles of user interaction. Technical dimensions capture characteristics that may be studied, compared and advanced independently. This makes it possible to talk about programming systems in a way that can be shared and constructively debated rather than relying solely on personal impressions.
Our framework is derived using a qualitative analysis of past programming systems. We outline two concrete ways of using our framework. First, we show how it can analyze a recently developed novel programming system. Then, we use it to identify an interesting unexplored point in the design space of programming systems.
Much research effort focuses on building programming systems that are easier to use, accessible to non-experts, moldable and/or powerful, but such efforts are disconnected. They are informal, guided by the personal vision of their authors and thus are only evaluable and comparable on the basis of individual experience using them. By providing foundations for more systematic research, we can help programming systems researchers to stand, at last, on the shoulders of giants
Copy-paste data augmentation for domain transfer on traffic signs
City streets carry a lot of information that can be exploited to improve the quality of the services the citizens receive. For example, autonomous vehicles need to act accordingly to all the element that are nearby the vehicle itself, like pedestrians, traffic signs and other vehicles. It is also possible to use such information for smart city applications, for example to predict and analyze the traffic or pedestrian flows.
Among all the objects that it is possible to find in a street, traffic signs are very important because of the information they carry. This information can in fact be exploited both for autonomous driving and for smart city applications. Deep learning and, more generally, machine learning models however need huge quantities to learn. Even though modern models are very good at gener- alizing, the more samples the model has, the better it can generalize between different samples.
Creating these datasets organically, namely with real pictures, is a very tedious task because of the wide variety of signs available in the whole world and especially because of all the possible light, orientation conditions and con- ditions in general in which they can appear. In addition to that, it may not be easy to collect enough samples for all the possible traffic signs available, cause some of them may be very rare to find.
Instead of collecting pictures manually, it is possible to exploit data aug- mentation techniques to create synthetic datasets containing the signs that are needed. Creating this data synthetically allows to control the distribution and the conditions of the signs in the datasets, improving the quality and quantity of training data that is going to be used. This thesis work is about using copy-paste data augmentation to create synthetic data for the traffic sign recognition task
Identifying Student Profiles Within Online Judge Systems Using Explainable Artificial Intelligence
Online Judge (OJ) systems are typically considered within programming-related courses as they yield fast and objective assessments of the code developed by the students. Such an evaluation generally provides a single decision based on a rubric, most commonly whether the submission successfully accomplished the assignment. Nevertheless, since in an educational context such information may be deemed insufficient, it would be beneficial for both the student and the instructor to receive additional feedback about the overall development of the task. This work aims to tackle this limitation by considering the further exploitation of the information gathered by the OJ and automatically inferring feedback for both the student and the instructor. More precisely, we consider the use of learning-based schemes—particularly, Multi-Instance Learning and classical Machine Learning formulations—to model student behaviour. Besides, Explainable Artificial Intelligence is contemplated to provide human-understandable feedback. The proposal has been evaluated considering a case of study comprising 2,500 submissions from roughly 90 different students from a programming-related course in a Computer Science degree. The results obtained validate the proposal: the model is capable of significantly predicting the user outcome (either passing or failing the assignment) solely based on the behavioural pattern inferred by the submissions provided to the OJ. Moreover, the proposal is able to identify prone-to-fail student groups and profiles as well as other relevant information, which eventually serves as feedback to both the student and the instructor. This work has been partially funded by the “Programa Redes-I3CE de investigacion en docencia universitaria del Instituto de Ciencias de la Educacion (REDES-I3CE-2020-5069)” of the University of Alicante.
The theme of this thesis is performance commitments in decentralized educational
management in Peru. The issue in question is not well known by the different actors in
the education sector, especially by decentralized bodies, such as the Regional
Directorates of Education (DRE) and the Local Educational Management Units
(UGEL). This lack of knowledge affects the management processes of these bodies
and therefore the expected educational results. In this research, two objectives are
proposed, the first aimed at justifying the importance of decentralized management in
public educational administration and the second at describing the benefits of
performance commitments in decentralized management of education. The method
applied in the investigation is of a documentary type, that is, it begins with the search
and selection of documents in a reliable database, and then analyzes and interprets
the information, having as a final product a document duly organized according to the
guidelines and scope of academic writing. The conclusions reached by this research
are, first, that the Performance Commitments that are applied in educational
management are supported by a set of rules and procedures given over time and within
the framework of a public policy, secondly, that these commitments allow better resultsbased
management for the timely and adequate supply of quality educational services.

Critical Review on Internet of Things (IoT): Evolution and Components Perspectives
Technological advancement in recent years has transformed the internet to a network where everything is linked, and everyday objects can be recognised and controlled. This interconnection is popularly termed as the Internet of Things (IoT). Although, IoT remains popular in academic literature, limited studies have focused on its evolution, components, and implications for industries. Hence, the focus of this book chapter is to explore these dimensions, and their implications for industries. The study adopted the critical review method, to address these gaps in the IoT literature for service and manufacturing industries. Furthermore, the relevance for IoT for service and manufacturing industries were also discussed. While the impact of IoT in the next five years is expected to be high by industry practitioners, experts consider the current degree of its implementation across industry to be on the average. This critical review contributes theoretically to the literature on IoT. In effect, the intense implementation of the IoT, IIoT and IoS will go a long way in ensuring improvements in various industries that would in the long run positively impact the general livelihood of people as well as the way of doing things. Practical implications and suggestions for future studies have been discussed
Examples of works to practice staccato technique in clarinet instrument
Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato
Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her
Perfect is the enemy of test oracle
Automation of test oracles is one of the most challenging facets of software
testing, but remains comparatively less addressed compared to automated test
input generation. Test oracles rely on a ground-truth that can distinguish
between the correct and buggy behavior to determine whether a test fails
(detects a bug) or passes. What makes the oracle problem challenging and
undecidable is the assumption that the ground-truth should know the exact
expected, correct, or buggy behavior. However, we argue that one can still
build an accurate oracle without knowing the exact correct or buggy behavior,
but how these two might differ. This paper presents SEER, a learning-based
approach that in the absence of test assertions or other types of oracle, can
determine whether a unit test passes or fails on a given method under test
(MUT). To build the ground-truth, SEER jointly embeds unit tests and the
implementation of MUTs into a unified vector space, in such a way that the
neural representation of tests are similar to that of MUTs they pass on them,
but dissimilar to MUTs they fail on them. The classifier built on top of this
vector representation serves as the oracle to generate "fail" labels, when test
inputs detect a bug in MUT or "pass" labels, otherwise. Our extensive
experiments on applying SEER to more than 5K unit tests from a diverse set of
open-source Java projects show that the produced oracle is (1) effective in
predicting the fail or pass labels, achieving an overall accuracy, precision,
recall, and F1 measure of 93%, 86%, 94%, and 90%, (2) generalizable, predicting
the labels for the unit test of projects that were not in training or
validation set with negligible performance drop, and (3) efficient, detecting
the existence of bugs in only 6.5 milliseconds on average.Comment: Published in ESEC/FSE 202
