Co-Fusion: Real-time Segmentation, Tracking and Fusion of Multiple Objects
In this paper we introduce Co-Fusion, a dense SLAM system that takes a live
stream of RGB-D images as input and segments the scene into different objects
(using either motion or semantic cues) while simultaneously tracking and
reconstructing their 3D shape in real time. We use a multiple model fitting
approach where each object can move independently from the background and still
be effectively tracked and its shape fused over time using only the information
from pixels associated with that object label. Previous attempts to deal with
dynamic scenes have typically considered moving regions as outliers, and
consequently do not model their shape or track their motion over time. In
contrast, we enable the robot to maintain 3D models for each of the segmented
objects and to improve them over time through fusion. As a result, our system
can enable a robot to maintain a scene description at the object level which
has the potential to allow interactions with its working environment; even in

A Joint 3D-2D based Method for Free Space Detection on Roads
In this paper, we address the problem of road segmentation and free space
detection in the context of autonomous driving. Traditional methods either use
3-dimensional (3D) cues such as point clouds obtained from LIDAR, RADAR or
stereo cameras or 2-dimensional (2D) cues such as lane markings, road
boundaries and object detection. Typical 3D point clouds do not have enough
resolution to detect fine differences in heights such as between road and
pavement. Image based 2D cues fail when encountering uneven road textures such
as due to shadows, potholes, lane markings or road restoration. We propose a
novel free road space detection technique combining both 2D and 3D cues. In
particular, we use CNN based road segmentation from 2D images and plane/box
fitting on sparse depth data obtained from SLAM as priors to formulate an
energy minimization using conditional random field (CRF), for road pixels
classification. While the CNN learns the road texture and is unaffected by
depth boundaries, the 3D information helps in overcoming texture based
classification failures. Finally, we use the obtained road segmentation with
the 3D depth data from monocular SLAM to detect the free space for the
navigation purposes. Our experiments on KITTI odometry dataset, Camvid dataset,
as well as videos captured by us, validate the superiority of the proposed

Real-time Monocular Object SLAM
We present a real-time object-based SLAM system that leverages the largest
object database to date. Our approach comprises two main components: 1) a
monocular SLAM algorithm that exploits object rigidity constraints to improve
the map and find its real scale, and 2) a novel object recognition algorithm
based on bags of binary words, which provides live detections with a database
of 500 3D objects. The two components work together and benefit each other: the
SLAM algorithm accumulates information from the observations of the objects,
anchors object features to especial map landmarks and sets constrains on the
optimization. At the same time, objects partially or fully located within the
map are used as a prior to guide the recognition algorithm, achieving higher
recall. We evaluate our proposal on five real environments showing improvements
on the accuracy of the map and efficiency with respect to other
state-of-the-art techniques
Dynamic Objects Segmentation for Visual Localization in Urban Environments
Visual localization and mapping is a crucial capability to address many
challenges in mobile robotics. It constitutes a robust, accurate and
cost-effective approach for local and global pose estimation within prior maps.
Yet, in highly dynamic environments, like crowded city streets, problems arise
as major parts of the image can be covered by dynamic objects. Consequently,
visual odometry pipelines often diverge and the localization systems
malfunction as detected features are not consistent with the precomputed 3D
model. In this work, we present an approach to automatically detect dynamic
object instances to improve the robustness of vision-based localization and
mapping in crowded environments. By training a convolutional neural network
model with a combination of synthetic and real-world data, dynamic object
instance masks are learned in a semi-supervised way. The real-world data can be
collected with a standard camera and requires minimal further post-processing.
Our experiments show that a wide range of dynamic objects can be reliably
detected using the presented method. Promising performance is demonstrated on
our own and also publicly available datasets, which also shows the
