    Semantic information interoperability in open networked system

    In open networked systems, each node shares part of its informational resources on the network and is responsible of providing an ontological description for them. To enable semantic information interoperability in networked contexts with a multitude of autonomous ontologies, appropriate matching techniques are required to determine semantic mappings between concepts of different ontologies. In this paper, we describe H-Match, an algorithm for dynamically performing ontology matching in open networked contexts. H-Match provides several matching models and metrics to work at different levels of depth, with different degrees of flexibility and accuracy, thus supporting semantic interoperability in a flexible way

    Improving sustainability through intelligent cargo and adaptive decision making

    In the current society, logistics is faced with the challenge to meet more stringent sustainability goals. Shippers and transport service providers both aim to reduce the carbon footprint of their logistic operations. To do so, optimal use of logistics resources and physical infrastructure should be aimed for. An adaptive decision making process for the selection of a specific transport modality, transport provider and timeslot (aimed at minimisation of the carbon footprint) enables shippers to achieve this. This requires shippers to have access to up-to-date capacity information from transport providers (e.g. current and scheduled loading status of the various transport means and information on carbon footprint) and traffic information (e.g. city logistics and current traffic information). A prerequisite is an adequate infrastructure for collaboration and open exchange of information between the various stakeholders in the logistics value chain to obtain the up-to-date information. This paper gives a view on how such an advanced information infrastructure can be realised, currently being developed within the EU iCargo project. The paper describes a reference logistics value chain, including business benefits for each of the roles in the logistics value chain of aiming for sustainability. A case analysis is presented that reflects a practical situation in which the various roles collaborate and exchange information for realizing sustainability goals, using adaptive decision making for selecting a transport modality, transport provider, and timeslot.     Components Interoperability through Mediating Connector Patterns

    A key objective for ubiquitous environments is to enable system interoperability between system's components that are highly heterogeneous. In particular, the challenge is to embed in the system architecture the necessary support to cope with behavioral diversity in order to allow components to coordinate and communicate. The continuously evolving environment further asks for an automated and on-the-fly approach. In this paper we present the design building blocks for the dynamic and on-the-fly interoperability between heterogeneous components. Specifically, we describe an Architectural Pattern called Mediating Connector, that is the key enabler for communication.     Improving Knowledge Retrieval in Digital Libraries Applying Intelligent Techniques

    Nowadays an enormous quantity of heterogeneous and distributed information is stored in the digital University. Exploring online collections to find knowledge relevant to a user’s interests is a challenging work. The artificial intelligence and Semantic Web provide a common framework that allows knowledge to be shared and reused in an efficient way. In this work we propose a comprehensive approach for discovering E-learning objects in large digital collections based on analysis of recorded semantic metadata in those objects and the application of expert system technologies. We have used Case Based-Reasoning methodology to develop a prototype for supporting efficient retrieval knowledge from online repositories. We suggest a conceptual architecture for a semantic search engine. OntoUS is a collaborative effort that proposes a new form of interaction between users and digital libraries, where the latter are adapted to users and their surroundings

    Investigating the feasibility of a distributed, mapping-based, approach to solving subject interoperability problems in a multi-scheme, cross-service, retrieval environment

    The HILT project is researching the problems of facilitating interoperability of subject descriptions in a distributed multi-scheme environment. HILT Phase I found a UK community consensus in favour of utilising an inter-scheme mapping service to improve interoperability. HILT Phase II investigated the approach by building a pilot server, and identified a range of issues that would have to be tackled if an operational service was to be successful. HILT Phase III will implement a centralised version of an M2M pilot, but will aim to design it so that the possibility of a move to a distributed service remains open. This aim will impact on likely future research concerns in Phase III and beyond. Wide adoption of a distributed approach to the problem could lead to the creation of a framework within which regional, national, and international efforts in the area can be harmonised and co-ordinated

    Thesauri on the Web: current developments and trends

    This article provides an overview of recent developments relating to the application of thesauri in information organisation and retrieval on the World Wide Web. It describes some recent thesaurus projects undertaken to facilitate resource description and discovery and access to wide-ranging information resources on the Internet. Types of thesauri available on the Web, thesauri integrated in databases and information retrieval systems, and multiple-thesaurus systems for cross-database searching are also discussed. Collective efforts and events in addressing the standardisation and novel applications of thesauri are briefly reviewed
