An Ontological Approach to Representing the Product Life Cycle

The ability to access and share data is key to optimizing and streamlining any industrial production process. Unfortunately, the manufacturing industry is stymied by a lack of interoperability among the systems by which data are produced and managed, and this is true both within and across organizations. In this paper, we describe our work to address this problem through the creation of a suite of modular ontologies representing the product life cycle and its successive phases, from design to end of life. We call this suite the Product Life Cycle (PLC) Ontologies. The suite extends proximately from The Common Core Ontologies (CCO) used widely in defense and intelligence circles, and ultimately from the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), which serves as top level ontology for the CCO and for some 300 further ontologies. The PLC Ontologies were developed together, but they have been factored to cover particular domains such as design, manufacturing processes, and tools. We argue that these ontologies, when used together with standard public domain alignment and browsing tools created within the context of the Semantic Web, may offer a low-cost approach to solving increasingly costly problems of data management in the manufacturing industry

A Knowledge Engineering Method for New Product Development

International audienceEngineering activities involve large groups of people from different domains and disciplines. They often generate important information flows that are difficult to manage. To face these difficulties, a knowledge engineering process is necessary to structure the information and its use. This paper presents a deployment of a knowledge capitalization process based on the enrichment of MOKA methodology to support the integration of Process Planning knowledge in a CAD System. Our goal is to help different actors to work collaboratively by proposing one referential view of the domain, the context and the objectives assuming that it will help them in better decision-making

Proposal for a process oriented knowledge management system (PKMS)

International audienceIn an increasingly competitive environment, manufacturing companies are more frequently looking to handle the knowledge referentials relating to their redesign processes. They are then able to implement this with less effort and balance out their work capacity for innovation activities, contributing to more significant improvements in their product offering. In this article we propose a conceptual model for the implementation of a process-oriented knowledge tool dedicated to the formalisation of this type of knowledge referential. The implementable nature of this model has been validated by a demonstrator tested on an application case provided by our industrial partner, Renault Powertrain Technology Department

Specification management for the cost constraint optimisation in microelectronic design

International audienceIn the preliminary design phase the integration of the economic constraints of a product is a difficult engineering task since there is a real lack of dedicated tools. This paper illustrates a specification software solution method making it possible to meet this need, applied to the microelectronics field

Approach to integrate product conceptual design information into a computer-aided design system

Commercial computer-aided design systems support the geometric definition of product, but they lack utilities to support initial design stages. Typical tasks such as customer need capture, functional requirement formalization, or design parameter definition are conducted in applications that, for instance, support ?quality function deployment? and ?failure modes and effects analysis? techniques. Such applications are noninteroperable with the computer-aided design systems, leading to discontinuous design information flows. This study addresses this issue and proposes a method to enhance the integration of design information generated in the early design stages into a commercial computer-aided design system. To demonstrate the feasibility of the approach adopted, a prototype application was developed and two case studies were executed
