    A Semantic Web Annotation Tool for a Web-Based Audio Sequencer

    Music and sound have a rich semantic structure which is so clear to the composer and the listener, but that remains mostly hidden to computing machinery. Nevertheless, in recent years, the introduction of software tools for music production have enabled new opportunities for migrating this knowledge from humans to machines. A new generation of these tools may exploit sound samples and semantic information coupling for the creation not only of a musical, but also of a "semantic" composition. In this paper we describe an ontology driven content annotation framework for a web-based audio editing tool. In a supervised approach, during the editing process, the graphical web interface allows the user to annotate any part of the composition with concepts from publicly available ontologies. As a test case, we developed a collaborative web-based audio sequencer that provides users with the functionality to remix the audio samples from the Freesound website and subsequently annotate them. The annotation tool can load any ontology and thus gives users the opportunity to augment the work with annotations on the structure of the composition, the musical materials, and the creator's reasoning and intentions.     Opening up Magpie via semantic services

    Magpie is a suite of tools supporting a ā€˜zero-costā€™ approach to semantic web browsing: it avoids the need for manual annotation by automatically associating an ontology-based semantic layer to web resources. An important aspect of Magpie, which differentiates it from superficially similar hypermedia systems, is that the association between items on a web page and semantic concepts is not merely a mechanism for dynamic linking, but it is the enabling condition for locating services and making them available to a user. These services can be manually activated by a user (pull services), or opportunistically triggered when the appropriate web entities are encountered during a browsing session (push services). In this paper we analyze Magpie from the perspective of building semantic web applications and we note that earlier implementations did not fulfill the criterion of ā€œopen as to servicesā€, which is a key aspect of the emerging semantic web. For this reason, in the past twelve months we have carried out a radical redesign of Magpie, resulting in a novel architecture, which is open both with respect to ontologies and semantic web services. This new architecture goes beyond the idea of merely providing support for semantic web browsing and can be seen as a software framework for designing and implementing semantic web applications

    Semantic annotation of multilingual learning objects based on a domain ontology

    One of the important tasks in the use of learning resources in e-learning is the necessity to annotate learning objects with appropriate metadata. However, annotating resources by hand is time consuming and difficult. Here we explore the problem of automatic extraction of metadata for description of learning resources. First, theoretical constraints for gathering certain types of metadata important for e-learning systems are discussed. Our approach to annotation is then outlined. This is based on a domain ontology, which allows us to annotate learning resources in a language independent way.We are motivated by the fact that the leading providers of learning content in various domains are often spread across countries speaking different languages. As a result, cross-language annotation can facilitate accessibility, sharing and reuse of learning resources
