    Data fusion strategy for precise vehicle location for intelligent self-aware maintenance systems

    Abstract— Nowadays careful measurement applications are handed over to Wired and Wireless Sensor Network. Taking the scenario of train location as an example, this would lead to an increase in uncertainty about position related to sensors with long acquisition times like Balises, RFID and Transponders along the track. We take into account the data without any synchronization protocols, for increase the accuracy and reduce the uncertainty after the data fusion algorithms. The case studies, we have analysed, derived from the needs of the project partners: train localization, head of an auger in the drilling sector localization and the location of containers of radioactive material waste in a reprocessing nuclear plant. They have the necessity to plan the maintenance operations of their infrastructure basing through architecture that taking input from the sensors, which are localization and diagnosis, maps and cost, to optimize the cost effectiveness and reduce the time of operation

    MRSL: AUTONOMOUS NEURAL NETWORK-BASED SELF-STABILIZING SYSTEM

    Stabilizing and localizing the positioning systems autonomously in the areas without GPS accessibility is a difficult task. In this thesis we describe a methodology called Most Reliable Straight Line (MRSL) for stabilizing and positioning camera-based objects in 3-D space. The camera-captured images are used to identify easy-to-track points “interesting points� and track them on two consecutive images. The distance between each of interesting points on the two consecutive images are compared and one with the maximum length is assigned to MRSL, which is used to indicate the deviation from the original position. To correct this our trained algorithm is deployed to reduce the deviation by issuing relevant commands, this action is repeated until MRSL converges to zero. To test the accuracy and robustness, the algorithm was deployed to control positioning of a Quadcopter. It was demonstrated that the Quadcopter (a) was highly robust to any external forces, (b) can fly even if the Quadcopter experiences loss of engine, (c) can fly smoothly and positions itself on a desired location

    Development of a Wireless Mobile Computing Platform for Fall Risk Prediction

    Falls are a major health risk with which the elderly and disabled must contend. Scientific research on smartphone-based gait detection systems using the Internet of Things (IoT) has recently become an important component in monitoring injuries due to these falls. Analysis of human gait for detecting falls is the subject of many research projects. Progress in these systems, the capabilities of smartphones, and the IoT are enabling the advancement of sophisticated mobile computing applications that detect falls after they have occurred. This detection has been the focus of most fall-related research; however, ensuring preventive measures that predict a fall is the goal of this health monitoring system. By performing a thorough investigation of existing systems and using predictive analytics, we built a novel mobile application/system that uses smartphone and smart-shoe sensors to predict and alert the user of a fall before it happens. The major focus of this dissertation has been to develop and implement this unique system to help predict the risk of falls. We used built-in sensors --accelerometer and gyroscope-- in smartphones and a sensor embedded smart-shoe. The smart-shoe contains four pressure sensors with a Wi-Fi communication module to unobtrusively collect data. The interactions between these sensors and the user resulted in distinct challenges for this research while also creating new performance goals based on the unique characteristics of this system. In addition to providing an exciting new tool for fall prediction, this work makes several contributions to current and future generation mobile computing research

    Hedonic Coalition Formation for Distributed Task Allocation among Wireless Agents

    Autonomous wireless agents such as unmanned aerial vehicles or mobile base stations present a great potential for deployment in next-generation wireless networks. While current literature has been mainly focused on the use of agents within robotics or software applications, we propose a novel usage model for self-organizing agents suited to wireless networks. In the proposed model, a number of agents are required to collect data from several arbitrarily located tasks. Each task represents a queue of packets that require collection and subsequent wireless transmission by the agents to a central receiver. The problem is modeled as a hedonic coalition formation game between the agents and the tasks that interact in order to form disjoint coalitions. Each formed coalition is modeled as a polling system consisting of a number of agents which move between the different tasks present in the coalition, collect and transmit the packets. Within each coalition, some agents can also take the role of a relay for improving the packet success rate of the transmission. The proposed algorithm allows the tasks and the agents to take distributed decisions to join or leave a coalition, based on the achieved benefit in terms of effective throughput, and the cost in terms of delay. As a result of these decisions, the agents and tasks structure themselves into independent disjoint coalitions which constitute a Nash-stable network partition. Moreover, the proposed algorithm allows the agents and tasks to adapt the topology to environmental changes such as the arrival/removal of tasks or the mobility of the tasks. Simulation results show how the proposed algorithm improves the performance, in terms of average player (agent or task) payoff, of at least 30.26% (for a network of 5 agents with up to 25 tasks) relatively to a scheme that allocates nearby tasks equally among agents.Comment: to appear, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computin

    Cooperative mobility maintenance techniques for information extraction from mobile wireless sensor networks

    Recent advances in the development of microprocessors, microsensors, ad-hoc wireless networking and information fusion algorithms led to increasingly capable Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Besides severe resource constraints, sensor nodes mobility is considered a fundamental characteristic of WSNs. Information Extraction (IE) is a key research area within WSNs that has been characterised in a variety of ways, ranging from a description of its purposes to reasonably abstract models of its processes and components. The problem of IE is a challenging task in mobile WSNs for several reasons including: the topology changes rapidly; calculation of trajectories and velocities is not a trivial task; increased data loss and data delivery delays; and other context and application specific challenges. These challenges offer fundamentally new research problems. There is a wide body of literature about IE from static WSNs. These approaches are proved to be effective and efficient. However, there are few attempts to address the problem of IE from mobile WSNs. These attempts dealt with mobility as the need arises and do not deal with the fundamental challenges and variations introduced by mobility on the WSNs. The aim of this thesis is to develop a solution for IE from mobile WSNs. This aim is achieved through the development of a middle-layer solution, which enables IE approaches that were designed for the static WSNs to operate in the presence of multiple mobile nodes. This thesis contributes toward the design of a new self-stabilisation algorithm that provides autonomous adaptability against nodes mobility in a transparent manner to both upper network layers and user applications. In addition, this thesis proposes a dynamic network partitioning protocol to achieve high quality of information, scalability and load balancing. The proposed solution is flexible, may be applied to different application domains, and less complex than many existing approaches. The simplicity of the solutions neither demands great computational efforts nor large amounts of energy conservation. Intensive simulation experiments with real-life parameters provide evidence of the efficiency of the proposed solution. Performance experimentations demonstrate that the integrated DNP/SS protocol outperforms its rival in the literature in terms of timeliness (by up to 22%), packet delivery ratio (by up to 13%), network scalability (by up to 25%), network lifetime (by up to 40.6%), and energy consumption (by up to 39.5%). Furthermore, it proves that DNP/SS successfully allows the deployment of static-oriented IE approaches in hybrid networks without any modifications or adaptations

    Real Time Gas Monitoring System Using Wireless Sensor Network

    Miner’s safety is the main issue in the present era. Miner’s health is affected by many means which includes unstable and cumbersome underground activities and awkward loads, heavy tools and equipment, exposure to toxic dust and chemicals, gas or dust explosions, improper use of explosives, gas intoxications, collapsing of mine structures, electrical burn, fires, flooding, rock falls from roofs and side walls workers stumbling/slipping/falling, or errors from malfunctioning or improperly used mining equipment. In earlier days for detection of gases canary and small animals are used but they didn’t provide the exact condition of the mines so safety in the mine in not guaranteed. Hence, there is a need of monitoring system which utilised the ZigBee wireless sensor network technology. There are two units of the monitoring system Sensor unit and Monitoring unit. Sensor unit will be placed in the underground section and Monitoring unit will be placed in the above the mines from where monitoring is done. Firstly, the Sensor unit is placed in the underground section of the mine. Where input is taken from the sensors in terms of Methane (CH4) i.e. MQ-2 sensor, Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) i.e. MQ-136 sensor, and Natural Gases i.e. MQ-5 sensor. Then they are compared with their threshold value by the Microcontroller Module and if the value is above the threshold value, the Buzzer starts ringing meanwhile data is displayed in the Display module and sent to the Wireless Communication Module of the Monitor unit i.e. ends device or coordinator through the Wireless Communication Module of the Sensor unit i.e. router. In this way, the study can help the miners get relief from any casualty and ultimately save their lives. The device encompasses a large range of networking. The data can also be stored for future investigation. The device is also durable and costs effective with a price of approx. Rs. 6,500 to 7,000/-
