A binary self-organizing map and its FPGA implementation
A binary Self Organizing Map (SOM) has been designed and
implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip. A novel learning algorithm which takes binary inputs and maintains tri-state weights is presented. The binary SOM has the capability of recognizing binary input sequences after training. A novel tri-state rule is used in updating the network weights during the training phase. The rule implementation is highly suited to the FPGA architecture, and allows extremely rapid training. This architecture may be used in real-time for fast pattern clustering and classification of the binary features
Communications and control for electric power systems: Power flow classification for static security assessment
This report investigates the classification of power system states using an artificial neural network model, Kohonen's self-organizing feature map. The ultimate goal of this classification is to assess power system static security in real-time. Kohonen's self-organizing feature map is an unsupervised neural network which maps N-dimensional input vectors to an array of M neurons. After learning, the synaptic weight vectors exhibit a topological organization which represents the relationship between the vectors of the training set. This learning is unsupervised, which means that the number and size of the classes are not specified beforehand. In the application developed in this report, the input vectors used as the training set are generated by off-line load-flow simulations. The learning algorithm and the results of the organization are discussed
Self-organized cortical map formation by guiding connections
We describe an algorithm for self-organizing connections from a source array to a target array of neurons that is inspired by neural growth cone guidance. Each source neuron projects a Gaussian pattern of connections to the target layer. Learning modifies the pattern center location. The small number of parameters required to specify connectivity has enabled this algorithm\u27s implementation in a neuromorphic silicon system. We demonstrate that this algorithm can lead to topographic feature maps similar to those observed in the visual cortex, and characterize its operation as function maximization, which connects this approach with other models of cortical map formation
Intelligent tracking control of a DC motor driver using self-organizing TSK type fuzzy neural networks
[[abstract]]In this paper, a self-organizing Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (TSK) type fuzzy neural network (STFNN) is proposed. The self-organizing approach demonstrates the property of automatically generating and pruning the fuzzy rules of STFNN without the preliminary knowledge. The learning algorithms not only extract the fuzzy rule of STFNN but also adjust the parameters of STFNN. Then, an adaptive self-organizing TSK-type fuzzy network controller (ASTFNC) system which is composed of a neural controller and a robust compensator is proposed. The neural controller uses an STFNN to approximate an ideal controller, and the robust compensator is designed to eliminate the approximation error in the Lyapunov stability sense without occurring chattering phenomena. Moreover, a proportional-integral (PI) type parameter tuning mechanism is derived to speed up the convergence rates of the tracking error. Finally, the proposed ASTFNC system is applied to a DC motor driver on a field-programmable gate array chip for low-cost and high-performance industrial applications. Self-Organizing Time Map: An Abstraction of Temporal Multivariate Patterns
This paper adopts and adapts Kohonen's standard Self-Organizing Map (SOM) for
exploratory temporal structure analysis. The Self-Organizing Time Map (SOTM)
implements SOM-type learning to one-dimensional arrays for individual time
units, preserves the orientation with short-term memory and arranges the arrays
in an ascending order of time. The two-dimensional representation of the SOTM
attempts thus twofold topology preservation, where the horizontal direction
preserves time topology and the vertical direction data topology. This enables
discovering the occurrence and exploring the properties of temporal structural
changes in data. For representing qualities and properties of SOTMs, we adapt
measures and visualizations from the standard SOM paradigm, as well as
introduce a measure of temporal structural changes. The functioning of the
SOTM, and its visualizations and quality and property measures, are illustrated
on artificial toy data. The usefulness of the SOTM in a real-world setting is
shown on poverty, welfare and development indicators
Gas identification with tin oxide sensor array and self-organizing maps: adaptive correction of sensor drifts
Low-cost tin oxide gas sensors are inherently nonspecific. In addition, they have several undesirable characteristics such as slow response, nonlinearities, and long-term drifts. This paper shows that the combination of a gas-sensor array together with self-organizing maps (SOM's) permit success in gas classification problems.
