Virtual environment trajectory analysis:a basis for navigational assistance and scene adaptivity
This paper describes the analysis and clustering of motion trajectories obtained while users navigate within a virtual environment (VE). It presents a neural network simulation that produces a set of five clusters which help to differentiate users on the basis of efficient and inefficient navigational strategies. The accuracy of classification carried out with a self-organising map algorithm was tested and improved to in excess of 85% by using learning vector quantisation. This paper considers how such user classifications could be utilised in the delivery of intelligent navigational support and the dynamic reconfiguration of scenes within such VEs. We explore how such intelligent assistance and system adaptivity could be delivered within a Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) context
Web-based support for managing large collections of software artefacts
There has been a long history of CASE tool development, with an underlying software repository at the heart of most systems. Usually such tools, even the more recently web-based systems, are focused on supporting individual projects within an enterprise or across a number of distributed sites. Little support for maintaining large heterogeneous collections of software artefacts across a number of projects has been developed. Within the GENESIS project, this has been a key consideration in the development of the Open Source Component Artefact Repository
(OSCAR). Its most recent extensions are explicitly addressing the provision of cross project global views of large software collections as well as historical views of individual artefacts within a collection. The long-term benefits of such support can only be realised if OSCAR is widely adopted and various steps to facilitate this are described
Towards Nootropia : a non-linear approach to adaptive document filtering
In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for users to find relevant information within the accessible glut. Research in Information Filtering (IF) tackles this problem through a tailored representation of the user interests, a user profile. Traditionally, IF inherits techniques from the related and more well established domains of Information Retrieval and Text Categorisation. These include, linear profile representations that exclude term dependencies and may only effectively represent a single topic of interest, and linear learning algorithms that achieve a steady profile adaptation pace. We argue that these practices are not attuned to the dynamic nature of user interests. A user may be interested in more than one topic in parallel, and both frequent variations and occasional radical changes of interests are inevitable over time. With our experimental system "Nootropia", we achieve adaptive document filtering with a single, multi-topic user profile. A hierarchical term network that takes into account topical and lexical correlations between terms and identifies topic-subtopic relations between them, is used to represent a user's multiple topics of interest and distinguish between them. A series of non-linear document evaluation functions is then established on the hierarchical network. Experiments using a variation of TREC's routing subtask to test the ability of a single profile to represent two and three topics of interest, reveal the approach's superiority over a linear profile representation. Adaptation of this single, multi-topic profile to a variety of changes in the user interests, is achieved through a process of self-organisation that constantly readjusts the profile stucturally, in response to user feedback. We used virtual users and another variation of TREC's routing subtask to test the profile on two learning and two forgetting tasks. The results clearly indicate the profile's ability to adapt to both frequent variations and radical changes in user interests
Lifelong Learning of Spatiotemporal Representations with Dual-Memory Recurrent Self-Organization
Artificial autonomous agents and robots interacting in complex environments
are required to continually acquire and fine-tune knowledge over sustained
periods of time. The ability to learn from continuous streams of information is
referred to as lifelong learning and represents a long-standing challenge for
neural network models due to catastrophic forgetting. Computational models of
lifelong learning typically alleviate catastrophic forgetting in experimental
scenarios with given datasets of static images and limited complexity, thereby
differing significantly from the conditions artificial agents are exposed to.
In more natural settings, sequential information may become progressively
available over time and access to previous experience may be restricted. In
this paper, we propose a dual-memory self-organizing architecture for lifelong
learning scenarios. The architecture comprises two growing recurrent networks
with the complementary tasks of learning object instances (episodic memory) and
categories (semantic memory). Both growing networks can expand in response to
novel sensory experience: the episodic memory learns fine-grained
spatiotemporal representations of object instances in an unsupervised fashion
while the semantic memory uses task-relevant signals to regulate structural
plasticity levels and develop more compact representations from episodic
experience. For the consolidation of knowledge in the absence of external
sensory input, the episodic memory periodically replays trajectories of neural
reactivations. We evaluate the proposed model on the CORe50 benchmark dataset
for continuous object recognition, showing that we significantly outperform
current methods of lifelong learning in three different incremental learning
scenario
