    Distributed Computation of Connected Dominating Set for Multi-Hop Wireless Networks

    AbstractIn large wireless multi-hop networks, routing is a main issue as they include many nodes that span over relatively a large area. In such a scenario, finding smallest set of dominant nodes for forwarding packets would be a good approach for better communication. Connected dominating set (CDS) computation is one of the method to find important nodes in the network. As CDS computation is an NP problem, several approximation algorithms are available but these algorithms have high message complexity. This paper discusses the design and implementation of a distributed algorithm to compute connected dominating sets in a wireless network with the help of network spectral properties. Based on local neighborhood, each node in the network finds its ego centric network. To identify dominant nodes, it uses bridge centrality value of ego centric network. A distributed algorithm is proposed to find nodes to connect dominant nodes which approximates CDS. The algorithm has been applied on networks with different network sizes and varying edge probability distributions. The algorithm outputs 40% important nodes in the network to form back haul communication links with an approximation ratio ≤ 0.04 * ∂ + 1, where ∂ is the maximum node degree. The results confirm that the algorithm contributes to a better performance with reduced message complexity

    Self-stabilizing k-clustering in mobile ad hoc networks

    In this thesis, two silent self-stabilizing asynchronous distributed algorithms are given for constructing a k-clustering of a connected network of processes. These are the first self-stabilizing solutions to this problem. One algorithm, FLOOD, takes O( k) time and uses O(k log n) space per process, while the second algorithm, BFS-MIS-CLSTR, takes O(n) time and uses O(log n) space; where n is the size of the network. Processes have unique IDs, and there is no designated leader. BFS-MIS-CLSTR solves three problems; it elects a leader and constructs a BFS tree for the network, constructs a minimal independent set, and finally a k-clustering. Finding a minimal k-clustering is known to be NP -hard. If the network is a unit disk graph in a plane, BFS-MIS-CLSTR is within a factor of O(7.2552k) of choosing the minimal number of clusters; A lower bound is given, showing that any comparison-based algorithm for the k-clustering problem that takes o( diam) rounds has very bad worst case performance; Keywords: BFS tree construction, K-clustering, leader election, MIS construction, self-stabilization, unit disk graph

    Self-* distributed query region covering in sensor networks

    Wireless distributed sensor networks are used to monitor a multitude of environments for both civil and military applications. Sensors may be deployed to unreachable or inhospitable areas. Thus, they cannot be replaced easily. However, due to various factors, sensors\u27 internal memory, or the sensors themselves, can become corrupted. Hence, there is a need for more robust sensor networks. Sensors are most commonly densely deployed, but keeping all sensors continually active is not energy efficient. Our aim is to select the minimum number of sensors which can entirely cover a particular monitored area, while remaining strongly connected. This concept is called a Minimum Connected Cover of a query region in a sensor network. In this research, we have designed two fully distributed, robust, self-* solutions to the minimum connected cover of query regions that can cope with both transient faults and sensor crashes. We considered the most general case in which every sensor has a different sensing and communication radius. We have also designed extended versions of the algorithms that use multi-hop information to obtain better results utilizing small atomicity (i.e., each sensor reads only one of its neighbors\u27 variables at a time, instead of reading all neighbors\u27 variables). With this, we have proven self-* (self-configuration, self-stabilization, and self-healing) properties of our solutions, both analytically and experimentally. The simulation results show that our solutions provide better performance in terms of coverage than pre-existing self-stabilizing algorithms

    About the Self-Stabilization of a Virtual Topology for Self-Organization in Ad Hoc Networks

    International audienceAd hoc networks are spontaneous wireless networks without any wired infrastructure, composed of mobile terminals. We assume that nodes must collaborate to set up an efficient network, such a collaboration requiring a self-organization in the network. We proposed a virtual structure to organize the network: the backbone is a connected structure helping to optimize the control traffic flooding. Clusters form services area, hierarchizing the network, electing one leader per cluster. Since the ad hoc topology is volatile, the self-stabilization of the algorithms is vital. The algorithms for both the construction and the maintenance are analytically studied to prove the self-stabilization of the proposed self-organization. Thus, the virtual structure is efficient and very scalable, a local topology change impacting only locally the virtual structure. Finally , simulations investigate the behavior and the performances of the virtual structure

    Beeping a Maximal Independent Set

    We consider the problem of computing a maximal independent set (MIS) in an extremely harsh broadcast model that relies only on carrier sensing. The model consists of an anonymous broadcast network in which nodes have no knowledge about the topology of the network or even an upper bound on its size. Furthermore, it is assumed that an adversary chooses at which time slot each node wakes up. At each time slot a node can either beep, that is, emit a signal, or be silent. At a particular time slot, beeping nodes receive no feedback, while silent nodes can only differentiate between none of its neighbors beeping, or at least one of its neighbors beeping. We start by proving a lower bound that shows that in this model, it is not possible to locally converge to an MIS in sub-polynomial time. We then study four different relaxations of the model which allow us to circumvent the lower bound and find an MIS in polylogarithmic time. First, we show that if a polynomial upper bound on the network size is known, it is possible to find an MIS in O(log^3 n) time. Second, if we assume sleeping nodes are awoken by neighboring beeps, then we can also find an MIS in O(log^3 n) time. Third, if in addition to this wakeup assumption we allow sender-side collision detection, that is, beeping nodes can distinguish whether at least one neighboring node is beeping concurrently or not, we can find an MIS in O(log^2 n) time.     Lattice Linear Problems vs Algorithms

    Modelling problems using predicates that induce a partial order among global states was introduced as a way to permit asynchronous execution in multiprocessor systems. A key property of such problems is that the predicate induces one lattice in the state space which guarantees that the execution is correct even if nodes execute with old information about their neighbours. Thus, a compiler that is aware of this property can ignore data dependencies and allow the application to continue its execution with the available data rather than waiting for the most recent one. Unfortunately, many interesting problems do not exhibit lattice linearity. This issue was alleviated with the introduction of eventually lattice linear algorithms. Such algorithms induce a partial order in a subset of the state space even though the problem cannot be defined by a predicate under which the states form a partial order. This paper focuses on analyzing and differentiating between lattice linear problems and algorithms. It also introduces a new class of algorithms called (fully) lattice linear algorithms. A characteristic of these algorithms is that the entire reachable state space is partitioned into one or more lattices and the initial state locks into one of these lattices. Thus, under a few additional constraints, the initial state can uniquely determine the final state. For demonstration, we present lattice linear self-stabilizing algorithms for minimal dominating set and graph colouring problems, and a parallel processing 2-approximation algorithm for vertex cover. The algorithm for minimal dominating set converges in n moves, and that for graph colouring converges in n+2m moves. The algorithm for vertex cover is the first lattice linear approximation algorithm for an NP-Hard problem; it converges in n moves. Some part is cut due to 1920 character limit.     Best-effort Group Service in Dynamic Networks

    We propose a group membership service for dynamic ad hoc networks. It maintains as long as possible the existing groups and ensures that each group diameter is always smaller than a constant, fixed according to the application using the groups. The proposed protocol is self-stabilizing and works in dynamic distributed systems. Moreover, it ensures a kind of continuity in the service offer to the application while the system is converging, except if too strong topology changes happen. Such a best effort behavior allows applications to rely on the groups while the stabilization has not been reached, which is very useful in dynamic ad hoc networks

    A mobile ad hoc network consists of certain nodes that communicate only through wireless medium and can move arbitrarily. The key feature of a mobile ad hoc network is the mobility of the nodes. Because of the mobility, communication links form and disappear as nodes come into and go out of each other's communica- tion range. Mobile ad hoc networks are particularly useful in situations like disaster recovery and search, military operations, etc. Research on mobile ad hoc networks has drawn a huge amount of attention recently. The main challenges for mobile ad hoc networks are the sparse resources and frequent mobility. Most of the research work has been focused on the MAC and routing layer. In this work, we focus on distributed services for mobile ad hoc networks. These services will provide some fundamental functions in developing various applications for mobile ad hoc networks. In particular, we focus on the clock synchronization, connected dominating set, and k-mutual exclusion problems in mobile ad hoc networks

    Practical Aggregation in the Edge

    Due to the increasing amounts of data produced by applications and devices, cloud infrastructures are becoming unable to timely process and provide answers back to users. This has led to the emergence of the edge computing paradigm that aims at moving computations closer to end user devices. Edge computing can be defined as performing computations outside the boundaries of cloud data centres. This however, can be materialised across very different scenarios considering the broad spectrum of devices that can be leveraged to perform computations in the edge. In this thesis, we focus on a concrete scenario of edge computing, that of multiple devices with wireless capabilities that collectively form a wireless ad hoc network to perform distributed computations. We aim at devising practical solutions for these scenarios however, there is a lack of tools to help us in achieving such goal. To address this first limitation we propose a novel framework, called Yggdrasil, that is specifically tailored to develop and execute distributed protocols over wireless ad hoc networks on commodity devices. As to enable distributed computations in such networks, we focus on the particular case of distributed data aggregation. In particular, we address a harder variant of this problem, that we dub distributed continuous aggregation, where input values used for the computation of the aggregation function may change over time, and propose a novel distributed continuous aggregation protocol, called MiRAge. We have implemented and validated both Yggdrasil and MiRAge through an extensive experimental evaluation using a test-bed composed of 24 Raspberry Pi’s. Our results show that Yggdrasil provides adequate abstractions and tools to implement and execute distributed protocols in wireless ad hoc settings. Our evaluation is also composed of a practical comparative study on distributed continuous aggregation protocols, that shows that MiRAge is more robust and achieves more precise aggregation results than competing state-of-the-art alternatives

    Algorithmes auto-stabilisants pour la construction de structures couvrantes réparties

    This thesis deals with the self-stabilizing construction of spanning structures over a distributed system. Self-stabilization is a paradigm for fault-tolerance in distributed algorithms. It guarantees that the system eventually satisfies its specification after transient faults hit the system. Our model of distributed system assumes locally shared memories for communicating, unique identifiers for symmetry-breaking, and distributed daemon for execution scheduling, that is, the weakest proper daemon. More generally, we aim for the weakest possible assumptions, such as arbitrary topologies, in order to propose the most versatile constructions of distributed spanning structures. We present four original self-stabilizing algorithms achieving k-clustering, (f,g)-alliance construction, and ranking. For every of these problems, we prove the correctness of our solutions. Moreover, we analyze their time and space complexity using formal proofs and simulations. Finally, for the (f,g)-alliance problem, we consider the notion of safe convergence in addition to self-stabilization. It enforces the system to first quickly satisfy a specification that guarantees a minimum of conditions, and then to converge to a more stringent specification.Cette thèse s'intéresse à la construction auto-stabilisante de structures couvrantes dans un système réparti. L'auto-stabilisation est un paradigme pour la tolérance aux fautes dans les algorithmes répartis. Plus précisément, elle garantit que le système retrouve un comportement correct en temps fini après avoir été perturbé par des fautes transitoires. Notre modèle de système réparti se base sur des mémoires localement partagées pour la communication, des identifiants uniques pour briser les symétries et un ordonnanceur inéquitable, c'est-à-dire le plus faible des ordonnanceurs. Dans la mesure du possible, nous nous imposons d'utiliser les plus faibles hypothèses, afin d'obtenir les constructions les plus générales de structures couvrantes réparties. Nous présentons quatre algorithmes auto-stabilisants originaux pour le k-partitionnement, la construction d'une (f,g)-alliance et l'indexation. Pour chacun de ces problèmes, nous prouvons la correction de nos solutions. De plus, nous analysons leur complexité en temps et en espace à l'aide de preuves formelles et de simulations. Enfin, pour le problème de (f,g)-alliance, nous prenons en compte la notion de convergence sûre qui vient s'ajouter à celle d'auto-stabilisation. Elle garantit d'abord que le comportement du système assure rapidement un minimum de conditions, puis qu'il continue de converger jusqu'à se conformer à une spécification plus exigeante
