Trust and reputation in multi-modal sensor networks for marine environmental monitoring
Greater temporal and spatial sampling allows environmental processes and the well- being of our waterways to be monitored and characterised from previously unobtainable perspectives. It allows us to create models, make predictions and better manage our environments. New technologies are emerging in order to enable remote autonomous sensing of our water systems and subsequently meet the demands for high temporal and spatial monitoring. In particular, advances in communication and sensor technology has provided a catalyst for progress in remote monitoring of our water systems. However despite continuous improvements there are limitations with the use of this technology in marine environmental monitoring applications. We summarise these limitations in terms of scalability and reliability. In order to address these two main issues, our research proposes that environmental monitoring applications would strongly benefit from the use of a multi-modal sensor network utilising visual sensors, modelled outputs and context information alongside the more conventional in-situ wireless sensor networks. However each of these addi- tional data streams are unreliable. Hence we adapt a trust and reputation model for optimising their use to the network.
For our research we use two test sites - the River Lee, Cork and Galway Bay each with a diverse range of multi-modal data sources. Firstly we investigate the coordination of multiple heterogenous information sources to allow more efficient operation of the more sophisticated in-situ analytical instrument in the network, to render the deployment of such devices more scalable. Secondly we address the issue of reliability. We investigate the ability of a multi-modal network to compensate for failure of in-situ nodes in the network, where there is no redundant identical node in the network to replace its operation. We adapt a model from the literature for dealing with the unreliability associated with each of the alternative sensor streams in order to monitor their behaviour over time and choose the most reliable output at a particular point in time in the network. We find that each of the alternative data streams demonstrates themselves to be useful tools in the network. The addition of the use of the trust and reputation model reflects their behaviour over time and demonstrates itself as a useful tool in optimising their use in the network
Self-learning cooperative transmission - Coping with unreliability due to mobility, channel estimation errors, and untrustworthy nodes
For cooperative transmission in wireless networks, a very challenging problem is to combine information from different paths that do not necessarily perfectly represent the source\u27s information. The excessive channel information needs to be estimated at the destination, especially in the networks with mobile nodes. Channel estimation error is often inevitable. Moreover, there may be untrustworthy nodes that do not honestly forward messages. Additionally, good nodes may fail to forward messages because they move out of the transmission range. In all above scenarios, the message forwarded by a relay node may not be the same as the message broadcast by the source node. This could significantly degrade the performance of cooperative transmission. Another challenging problem is to study complicated cooperative relaying topologies with multihop, multiple relays. Currently, existing schemes only analyze the one-hop case possibly with multiple relays, or the multi-hop case in a single chain topology. In this paper, we propose a low-overhead self-learning cooperative transmission scheme that solves above problems. In particular, each node detects the events in which the received signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) is greater than a threshold. The distribution of the events, which can describe reliability/trustworthiness of a relay node, is modeled as a Beta function. With a very low overhead, those Beta functions can propagate through the complicated cooperative relaying topology from the source to the destination. When the destination combines information from different paths, both mean and variance are taken into the consideration. The simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme can adapt to estimation errors, untrustworthy nodes, and node mobility. The BER performance of our proposed scheme is more than 4 times better than the traditional Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) that does not consider unreliability in relays. © 2007 IEEE
Reliable and secure low energy sensed spectrum communication for time critical cloud computing applications
Reliability and security of data transmission and access are of paramount importance to enhance the dependability of time critical remote monitoring systems (e.g. tele-monitoring patients, surveillance of smart grid components). Potential failures for data transmissions include wireless channel unavailability and delays due to the interruptions. Reliable data transmission demands seamless channel availability with minimum delays in spite of interruptions (e.g. fading, denial-of-service attacks). Secure data transmissions require sensed data to be transmitted over unreliable wireless channels with sucient security using suitable encryption techniques. The transmitted data are stored in secure cloud repositories. Potential failures for data access include unsuccessful user authentications due to mis-management of digital identities and insucient permissions to authorize situation specic data access requests. Reliable and secure data access requires robust user authentication and context-dependent authorization to fulll situation specic data utility needs in cloud repositories. The work herein seeks to enhance the dependability of time critical remote monitoring applications, by reducing these failure conditions which may degrade the reliability and security of data transmission or access. As a result of an extensive literature survey, in order to achieve the above said security and reliability, the following areas have been selected for further investigations. The enhancement of opportunistic transmissions in cognitive radio networks to provide greater channel availability as opposed to xed spectrum allocations in conventional wireless networks. Delay sensitive channel access methods to ensure seamless connectivity in spite of multiple interruptions in cognitive radio networks. Energy ecient encryption and route selection mechanisms to enhance both secure and reliable data transmissions. Trustworthy digital identity management in cloud platforms which can facilitate ecient user authentication to ensure reliable access to the sensed remote monitoring data. Context-aware authorizations to reliably handle the exible situation specic data access requests. Main contributions of this thesis include a novel trust metric to select non-malicious cooperative spectrum sensing users to reliably detect vacant channels, a reliable delaysensitive cognitive radio spectrum hand-o management method for seamless connectivity and an energy-aware physical unclonable function based encryption key size selection method for secure data transmission. Furthermore, a trust based identity provider selection method for user authentications and a reliable context-aware situation specic authorization method are developed for more reliable and secure date access in cloud repositories. In conclusion, these contributions can holistically contribute to mitigate the above mentioned failure conditions to achieve the intended dependability of the timecritical remote monitoring applications
Private and censorship-resistant communication over public networks
Societyâs increasing reliance on digital communication networks is creating unprecedented opportunities for wholesale
surveillance and censorship. This thesis investigates the use of public networks such as the Internet to build
robust, private communication systems that can resist monitoring and attacks by powerful adversaries such as national
governments.
We sketch the design of a censorship-resistant communication system based on peer-to-peer Internet overlays in which
the participants only communicate directly with people they know and trust. This âfriend-to-friendâ approach protects
the participantsâ privacy, but it also presents two significant challenges. The first is that, as with any peer-to-peer
overlay, the users of the system must collectively provide the resources necessary for its operation; some users might
prefer to use the system without contributing resources equal to those they consume, and if many users do so, the
system may not be able to survive.
To address this challenge we present a new game theoretic model of the problem of encouraging cooperation between
selfish actors under conditions of scarcity, and develop a strategy for the game that provides rational incentives for
cooperation under a wide range of conditions.
The second challenge is that the structure of a friend-to-friend overlay may reveal the usersâ social relationships to
an adversary monitoring the underlying network. To conceal their sensitive relationships from the adversary, the
users must be able to communicate indirectly across the overlay in a way that resists monitoring and attacks by other
participants.
We address this second challenge by developing two new routing protocols that robustly deliver messages across
networks with unknown topologies, without revealing the identities of the communication endpoints to intermediate
nodes or vice versa. The protocols make use of a novel unforgeable acknowledgement mechanism that proves that a
message has been delivered without identifying the source or destination of the message or the path by which it was
delivered. One of the routing protocols is shown to be robust to attacks by malicious participants, while the other
provides rational incentives for selfish participants to cooperate in forwarding messages

Designing Embodied Interactive Software Agents for E-Learning: Principles, Components, and Roles
Embodied interactive software agents are complex autonomous, adaptive, and social software systems with a digital embodiment that enables them to act on and react to other entities (users, objects, and other agents) in their environment through bodily actions, which include the use of verbal and non-verbal communicative behaviors in face-to-face interactions with the user. These agents have been developed for various roles in different application domains, in which they perform tasks that have been assigned to them by their developers or delegated to them by their users or by other agents. In computer-assisted learning, embodied interactive pedagogical software agents have the general task to promote human learning by working with students (and other agents) in computer-based learning environments, among them e-learning platforms based on Internet technologies, such as the Virtual Linguistics Campus (www.linguistics-online.com). In these environments, pedagogical agents provide contextualized, qualified, personalized, and timely assistance, cooperation, instruction, motivation, and services for both individual learners and groups of learners.
This thesis develops a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and user-oriented view of the design of embodied interactive pedagogical software agents, which integrates theoretical and practical insights from various academic and other fields. The research intends to contribute to the scientific understanding of issues, methods, theories, and technologies that are involved in the design, implementation, and evaluation of embodied interactive software agents for different roles in e-learning and other areas. For developers, the thesis provides sixteen basic principles (Added Value, Perceptible Qualities, Balanced Design, Coherence, Consistency, Completeness, Comprehensibility, Individuality, Variability, Communicative Ability, Modularity, Teamwork, Participatory Design, Role Awareness, Cultural Awareness, and Relationship Building) plus a large number of specific guidelines for the design of embodied interactive software agents and their components. Furthermore, it offers critical reviews of theories, concepts, approaches, and technologies from different areas and disciplines that are relevant to agent design. Finally, it discusses three pedagogical agent roles (virtual native speaker, coach, and peer) in the scenario of the linguistic fieldwork classes on the Virtual Linguistics Campus and presents detailed considerations for the design of an agent for one of these roles (the virtual native speaker)

Combining SOA and BPM Technologies for Cross-System Process Automation
This paper summarizes the results of an industry case study that introduced a cross-system business process automation solution based on a combination of SOA and BPM standard technologies (i.e., BPMN, BPEL, WSDL). Besides discussing major weaknesses of the existing, custom-built, solution and comparing them against experiences with the developed prototype, the paper presents a course of action for transforming the current solution into the proposed solution. This includes a general approach, consisting of four distinct steps, as well as specific action items that are to be performed for every step. The discussion also covers language and tool support and challenges arising from the transformation
Fuelling the zero-emissions road freight of the future: routing of mobile fuellers
The future of zero-emissions road freight is closely tied to the sufficient availability of new and clean fuel options such as electricity and Hydrogen. In goods distribution using Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) a major challenge in the transition period would pertain to their limited autonomy and scarce and unevenly distributed refuelling stations. One viable solution to facilitate and speed up the adoption of ECVs/HFCVs by logistics, however, is to get the fuel to the point where it is needed (instead of diverting the route of delivery vehicles to refuelling stations) using "Mobile Fuellers (MFs)". These are mobile battery swapping/recharging vans or mobile Hydrogen fuellers that can travel to a running ECV/HFCV to provide the fuel they require to complete their delivery routes at a rendezvous time and space. In this presentation, new vehicle routing models will be presented for a third party company that provides MF services. In the proposed problem variant, the MF provider company receives routing plans of multiple customer companies and has to design routes for a fleet of capacitated MFs that have to synchronise their routes with the running vehicles to deliver the required amount of fuel on-the-fly. This presentation will discuss and compare several mathematical models based on different business models and collaborative logistics scenarios
