Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is, by definition, a process that occurs in any system where electrical energy is transmitted from a power source to a load without the connection of electrical conductors. WPT is the driving technology that will enable the next stage in the current consumer electronics revolution, including battery-less sensors, passive RF identification (RFID), passive wireless sensors, the Internet of Things and 5G, and machine-to-machine solutions. WPT-enabled devices can be powered by harvesting energy from the surroundings, including electromagnetic (EM) energy, leading to a new communication networks paradigm, the Wirelessly Powered Networks

Mobile edge computing in wireless communication networks: design and optimization

This dissertation studies the design and optimization of applying mobile edge computing (MEC) in three kinds of advanced wireless networks, which is motivated by three non-trivial but not thoroughly studied topics in the existing MEC-related literature. First, we study the application of MEC in wireless powered cooperation-assisted systems. The technology of wireless power transfer (WPT) used at the access point (AP) is capable of providing sustainable energy supply for resource-limited user equipment (UEs) to support computation offloading, but also introduces the double-near-far effect into wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). By leveraging cooperation among near-far users, the system performance can be highly improved through effectively suppressing the double-near-far effect in WPCNs. Then, we consider the application of MEC in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted relaying systems to make better use of the flexible features of UAV as well as its computing resources. The adopted UAV not only acts as an MEC server to help compute UEs' offloaded tasks but also a relay to forward UEs' offloaded tasks to the AP, thus such kind of cooperation between the UAV and the AP can take the advantages of both sides so as to improve the system performance. Last, heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) with the coexistence of MEC and central cloud computing (CCC) are studied to show the complementary and promotional effects between MEC and CCC. The small base stations (SBSs) empowered by edge clouds offer limited edge computing services for UEs, whereas the macro base station (MBS) provides high-performance CCC services for UEs via restricted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) backhauls to their associated SBSs. With further considering the case with massive MIMO backhauls, the system performance can be further improved while significantly reducing the computational complexity. In the aforementioned three advanced MEC systems, we mainly focus on minimizing the energy consumption of the systems subject to proper latency constraints, due to the fact that energy consumption and latency are regarded as two important metrics for measuring the performance of MEC-related works. Effective optimization algorithms are proposed to solve the corresponding energy minimization problems, which are further validated by numerical results

3-D Trajectory Optimization for Fixed-Wing UAV-Enabled Wireless Network

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a promising technology for the next-generation communication systems. In this article, a fixed-wing UAV is considered to enhance the connectivity for far-users at the coverage region of an overcrowded base station (BS). In particular, a three dimensions (3D) UAV trajectory is optimized to improve the overall energy efficiency of the communication system by considering the system throughput and the UAV's energy consumption for a given finite time horizon. The solutions for the proposed optimization problem are derived by applying Lagrangian optimization and using an algorithm based on successive convex iteration techniques. Numerical results demonstrate that by optimizing the UAV's trajectory in the 3D space, the proposed system design achieves significantly higher energy efficiency with the gain reaching up to 20bitsJ−1 compared to the 14bitsJ−1 maximum gain achieved by the 2D space trajectory. Further, results reveal that the proposed algorithm converge earlier in 3D space trajectory compare to the 2D space trajectory

Emerging applications such as Internet of Everything, Holographic Telepresence, collaborative robots, and space and deep-sea tourism are already highlighting the limitations of existing fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. These limitations are in terms of data-rate, latency, reliability, availability, processing, connection density and global coverage, spanning over ground, underwater and space. The sixth-generation (6G) of mobile networks are expected to burgeon in the coming decade to address these limitations. The development of 6G vision, applications, technologies and standards has already become a popular research theme in academia and the industry. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the current developments towards 6G. We highlight the societal and technological trends that initiate the drive towards 6G. Emerging applications to realize the demands raised by 6G driving trends are discussed subsequently. We also elaborate the requirements that are necessary to realize the 6G applications. Then we present the key enabling technologies in detail. We also outline current research projects and activities including standardization efforts towards the development of 6G. Finally, we summarize lessons learned from state-of-the-art research and discuss technical challenges that would shed a new light on future research directions towards 6G

Beamforming based Mitigation of Hovering Inaccuracy in UAV-Aided RFET

Hovering inaccuracy of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) degrades the performance of UAV-aided radio frequency energy transfer (RFET). Such inaccuracy arises due to positioning error and rotational motion of UAV, which lead to localization mismatch (LM) and orientation mismatch (OM). In this paper, antenna array beam steering based UAV hovering inaccuracy mitigation strategy is presented. The antenna beam does not accurately point towards the field sensor node due to rotational motion of the UAV along with pitch, roll, and yaw, which leads to deviation in the elevation angle. An analytical framework is developed to model this deviation, and its variation is estimated using the data collected through an experimental setup. Closed-form expressions of received power at the field node are obtained for the four cases arising from LM and OM. An optimization problem to estimate the optimal system parameters (transmit power, UAV hovering altitude, and antenna steering parameter) is formulated. The problem is proven to be nonconvex. Therefore, an algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly mitigates the hovering inaccuracy; compared to reported state-of-the-art the same performance can be achieved with substantially less transmit power
