Event-triggered Pulse Control with Model Learning (if Necessary)
In networked control systems, communication is a shared and therefore scarce
resource. Event-triggered control (ETC) can achieve high performance control
with a significantly reduced amount of samples compared to classical, periodic
control schemes. However, ETC methods usually rely on the availability of an
accurate dynamics model, which is oftentimes not readily available. In this
paper, we propose a novel event-triggered pulse control strategy that learns
dynamics models if necessary. In addition to adapting to changing dynamics, the
method also represents a suitable replacement for the integral part typically

Decentralized event-triggered control over wireless sensor/actuator networks
In recent years we have witnessed a move of the major industrial automation
providers into the wireless domain. While most of these companies already offer
wireless products for measurement and monitoring purposes, the ultimate goal is
to be able to close feedback loops over wireless networks interconnecting
sensors, computation devices, and actuators. In this paper we present a
decentralized event-triggered implementation, over sensor/actuator networks, of
centralized nonlinear controllers. Event-triggered control has been recently
proposed as an alternative to the more traditional periodic execution of
control tasks. In a typical event-triggered implementation, the control signals
are kept constant until the violation of a condition on the state of the plant
triggers the re-computation of the control signals. The possibility of reducing
the number of re-computations, and thus of transmissions, while guaranteeing
desired levels of performance makes event-triggered control very appealing in
the context of sensor/actuator networks. In these systems the communication
network is a shared resource and event-triggered implementations of control
laws offer a flexible way to reduce network utilization. Moreover reducing the
number of times that a feedback control law is executed implies a reduction in
transmissions and thus a reduction in energy expenditures of battery powered

CPL: A Core Language for Cloud Computing -- Technical Report
Running distributed applications in the cloud involves deployment. That is,
distribution and configuration of application services and middleware
infrastructure. The considerable complexity of these tasks resulted in the
emergence of declarative JSON-based domain-specific deployment languages to
develop deployment programs. However, existing deployment programs unsafely
compose artifacts written in different languages, leading to bugs that are hard
to detect before run time. Furthermore, deployment languages do not provide
extension points for custom implementations of existing cloud services such as
application-specific load balancing policies.
To address these shortcomings, we propose CPL (Cloud Platform Language), a
statically-typed core language for programming both distributed applications as
well as their deployment on a cloud platform. In CPL, application services and
deployment programs interact through statically typed, extensible interfaces,
and an application can trigger further deployment at run time. We provide a
formal semantics of CPL and demonstrate that it enables type-safe, composable
and extensible libraries of service combinators, such as load balancing and

Policy-based techniques for self-managing parallel applications
This paper presents an empirical investigation of policy-based self-management techniques for parallel applications executing in loosely-coupled environments. The dynamic and heterogeneous nature of these environments is discussed and the special considerations for parallel applications are identified. An adaptive strategy for the run-time deployment of tasks of parallel applications is presented. The strategy is based on embedding numerous policies which are informed by contextual and environmental inputs. The policies govern various aspects of behaviour, enhancing flexibility so that the goals of efficiency and performance are achieved despite high levels of environmental variability. A prototype self-managing parallel application is used as a vehicle to explore the feasibility and benefits of the strategy. In particular, several aspects of stability are investigated. Revisiting Matrix Product on Master-Worker Platforms
This paper is aimed at designing efficient parallel matrix-product algorithms
for heterogeneous master-worker platforms. While matrix-product is
well-understood for homogeneous 2D-arrays of processors (e.g., Cannon algorithm
and ScaLAPACK outer product algorithm), there are three key hypotheses that
render our work original and innovative:
- Centralized data. We assume that all matrix files originate from, and must
be returned to, the master.
- Heterogeneous star-shaped platforms. We target fully heterogeneous
platforms, where computational resources have different computing powers.
- Limited memory. Because we investigate the parallelization of large
problems, we cannot assume that full matrix panels can be stored in the worker
memories and re-used for subsequent updates (as in ScaLAPACK).
We have devised efficient algorithms for resource selection (deciding which
workers to enroll) and communication ordering (both for input and result
messages), and we report a set of numerical experiments on various platforms at
Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon and the University of Tennessee. However, we
point out that in this first version of the report, experiments are limited to
homogeneous platforms

(www.cost -arvi .eu); Ateneo/CSP D16D15000360005 project RunVar (runvar-project.di.unito.it).Aggregate computing is an emerging approach to the engineering of complex coordination for distributed systems, based on viewing system interactions in terms of information propagating through collectives of devices, rather than in terms of individual devices and their interaction with their peers and environment. The foundation of this approach is the distillation of a number of prior approaches, both formal and pragmatic, proposed under the umbrella of field-based coordination, and culminating into the field calculus, a universal functional programming model for the specification and composition of collective behaviours with equivalent local and aggregate semantics. This foundation has been elaborated into a layered approach to engineering coordination of complex distributed systems, building up to pragmatic applications through intermediate layers encompassing reusable libraries of program components. Furthermore, some of these components are formally shown to satisfy formal properties like self-stabilisation, which transfer to whole application services by functional composition. Resource provisioning in Science Clouds: Requirements and challenges
Cloud computing has permeated into the information technology industry in the
last few years, and it is emerging nowadays in scientific environments. Science
user communities are demanding a broad range of computing power to satisfy the
needs of high-performance applications, such as local clusters,
high-performance computing systems, and computing grids. Different workloads
are needed from different computational models, and the cloud is already
considered as a promising paradigm. The scheduling and allocation of resources
is always a challenging matter in any form of computation and clouds are not an
exception. Science applications have unique features that differentiate their
workloads, hence, their requirements have to be taken into consideration to be
fulfilled when building a Science Cloud. This paper will discuss what are the
main scheduling and resource allocation challenges for any Infrastructure as a
Service provider supporting scientific applications
Coordinating Resource Use in Open Distributed Systems
In an open distributed system, computational resources are peer-owned, and distributed over time and space. The system is open to interactions with its environment, and the resources can dynamically join or leave the system, or can be discovered at runtime. This dynamicity leads to opportunities to carry out computations without statically owned resources, harnessing the collective compute power of the resources connected by the Internet. However, realizing this potential requires efficient and scalable resource discovery, coordination, and control, which present challenges in a dynamic, open environment.
In this thesis, I present an approach to address these challenges by separating the functionality concerns of concurrent computations from those of coordinating their resource use, with the purpose of reducing programming complexity, and aiding development of correct, efficient, and resource-aware concurrent programs.
As a first step towards effectively coordinating distributed resources, I developed DREAM, a Distributed Resource Estimation and Allocation Model, which enables computations to reason about future availability of resources. I then developed a fine-grained resource coordination scheme for distributed computations. The coordination scheme integrates DREAM-based resource reasoning into a distributed scheduler, for deciding and enforcing fine-grained resource-use schedules for distributed computations. To control the overhead caused by the coordination, a tuner is implemented which explicitly balances the overhead of the control mechanisms against the extent of control exercised.
The effectiveness and performance of the resource coordination approach have been evaluated using a number of case studies. Experimental results show that the approach can effectively schedule computations for supporting various types of coordination objectives, such as ensuring Quality-of-Service, power-efficient execution, and dynamic load balancing. The overhead caused by the coordination mechanism is relatively modest, and adjustable through the tuner. In addition, the coordination mechanism does not add extra programming complexity to computations
