A framework for quantification and physical modeling of cell mixing applied to oscillator synchronization in vertebrate somitogenesis
In development and disease, cells move as they exchange signals. One example is found in vertebrate development, during which the timing of segment formation is set by a ‘segmentation clock’, in which oscillating gene expression is synchronized across a population of cells by Delta-Notch signaling. Delta-Notch signaling requires local cell-cell contact, but in the zebrafish embryonic tailbud, oscillating cells move rapidly, exchanging neighbors. Previous theoretical studies proposed that this relative movement or cell mixing might alter signaling and thereby enhance synchronization. However, it remains unclear whether the mixing timescale in the tissue is in the right range for this effect, because a framework to reliably measure the mixing timescale and compare it with signaling timescale is lacking. Here, we develop such a framework using a quantitative description of cell mixing without the need for an external reference frame and constructing a physical model of cell movement based on the data. Numerical simulations show that mixing with experimentally observed statistics enhances synchronization of coupled phase oscillators, suggesting that mixing in the tailbud is fast enough to affect the coherence of rhythmic gene expression. Our approach will find general application in analyzing the relative movements of communicating cells during development and disease.Fil: Uriu, Koichiro. New Solutions to the Firing Squad Synchronization Problems for Neural and Hyperdag P Systems
We propose two uniform solutions to an open question: the Firing Squad
Synchronization Problem (FSSP), for hyperdag and symmetric neural P systems,
with anonymous cells. Our solutions take e_c+5 and 6e_c+7 steps, respectively,
where e_c is the eccentricity of the commander cell of the dag or digraph
underlying these P systems. The first and fast solution is based on a novel
proposal, which dynamically extends P systems with mobile channels. The second
solution is substantially longer, but is solely based on classical rules and
static channels. In contrast to the previous solutions, which work for
tree-based P systems, our solutions synchronize to any subset of the underlying
digraph; and do not require membrane polarizations or conditional rules, but
require states, as typically used in hyperdag and neural P systems
Synchronization in dynamical networks of locally coupled self-propelled oscillators
Systems of mobile physical entities exchanging information with their
neighborhood can be found in many different situations. The understanding of
their emergent cooperative behaviour has become an important issue across
disciplines, requiring a general conceptual framework in order to harvest the
potential of these systems. We study the synchronization of coupled oscillators
in time-evolving networks defined by the positions of self-propelled agents
interacting in real space. In order to understand the impact of mobility in the
synchronization process on general grounds, we introduce a simple model of
self-propelled hard disks performing persistent random walks in 2 space and
carrying an internal Kuramoto phase oscillator. For non-interacting particles,
self-propulsion accelerates synchronization. The competition between agent
mobility and excluded volume interactions gives rise to a richer scenario,
leading to an optimal self-propulsion speed. We identify two extreme dynamic
regimes where synchronization can be understood from theoretical
considerations. A systematic analysis of our model quantifies the departure
from the latter ideal situations and characterizes the different mechanisms
leading the evolution of the system. We show that the synchronization of
locally coupled mobile oscillators generically proceeds through coarsening
verifying dynamic scaling and sharing strong similarities with the phase
ordering dynamics of the 2 XY model following a quench. Our results shed
light into the generic mechanisms leading the synchronization of mobile agents,
providing a efficient way to understand more complex or specific situations
involving time-dependent networks where synchronization, mobility and excluded
volume are at play
MScMS-II: an innovative IR-based indoor coordinate measuring system for large-scale metrology applications
According to the current great interest concerning large-scale metrology applications in many different fields of manufacturing industry, technologies and techniques for dimensional measurement have recently shown a substantial improvement. Ease-of-use, logistic and economic issues, as well as metrological performance are assuming a more and more important role among system requirements. This paper describes the architecture and the working principles of a novel infrared (IR) optical-based system, designed to perform low-cost and easy indoor coordinate measurements of large-size objects. The system consists of a distributed network-based layout, whose modularity allows fitting differently sized and shaped working volumes by adequately increasing the number of sensing units. Differently from existing spatially distributed metrological instruments, the remote sensor devices are intended to provide embedded data elaboration capabilities, in order to share the overall computational load. The overall system functionalities, including distributed layout configuration, network self-calibration, 3D point localization, and measurement data elaboration, are discussed. Realizing live sequence charts in SystemVerilog.
The design of an embedded control system starts with an investigation of properties and behaviors of the process evolving within its environment, and an analysis of the requirement for its safety performance. In early stages, system requirements are often specified as scenarios of behavior using sequence charts for different use cases. This specification must be precise, intuitive and expressive enough to capture different aspects of embedded control systems. As a rather rich and useful extension to the classical message sequence charts, live sequence charts (LSC), which provide a rich collection of constructs for specifying both possible and mandatory behaviors, are very suitable for designing an embedded control system. However, it is not a trivial task to realize a high-level design model in executable program codes effectively and correctly. This paper tackles the challenging task by providing a mapping algorithm to automatically synthesize SystemVerilog programs from given LSC specifications
Seamless roaming and guaranteed communication using a synchronized single-hop multi-gateway 802.15.4e TSCH network
Industrial wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are being used to improve the
efficiency, productivity and safety of industrial processes. An open standard
that is commonly used in such cases is IEEE 802.15.4e. Its TSCH mode employs a
time synchronized based MAC scheme together with channel hopping to alleviate
the impact of channel fading. Until now, most of the industrial WSNs have been
designed to only support static nodes and are not able to deal with mobility.
In this paper, we show how a single-hop, multi-gateway IEEE 802.15.4e TSCH
network architecture can tackle the mobility problem. We introduce the Virtual
Grand Master (VGM) concept that moves the synchronization point from separated
Backbone Border Routers (BBRs) towards the backbone network. With time
synchronization of all BBRs, mobile nodes can roam from one BBR to another
without time desynchronization. In addition to time synchronization, we
introduce a mechanism to synchronize the schedules between BBRs to support fast
