    High Accuracy Distributed Target Detection and Classification in Sensor Networks Based on Mobile Agent Framework

    High-accuracy distributed information exploitation plays an important role in sensor networks. This dissertation describes a mobile-agent-based framework for target detection and classification in sensor networks. Specifically, we tackle the challenging problems of multiple- target detection, high-fidelity target classification, and unknown-target identification. In this dissertation, we present a progressive multiple-target detection approach to estimate the number of targets sequentially and implement it using a mobile-agent framework. To further improve the performance, we present a cluster-based distributed approach where the estimated results from different clusters are fused. Experimental results show that the distributed scheme with the Bayesian fusion method have better performance in the sense that they have the highest detection probability and the most stable performance. In addition, the progressive intra-cluster estimation can reduce data transmission by 83.22% and conserve energy by 81.64% compared to the centralized scheme. For collaborative target classification, we develop a general purpose multi-modality, multi-sensor fusion hierarchy for information integration in sensor networks. The hierarchy is com- posed of four levels of enabling algorithms: local signal processing, temporal fusion, multi-modality fusion, and multi-sensor fusion using a mobile-agent-based framework. The fusion hierarchy ensures fault tolerance and thus generates robust results. In the meanwhile, it also takes into account energy efficiency. Experimental results based on two field demos show constant improvement of classification accuracy over different levels of the hierarchy. Unknown target identification in sensor networks corresponds to the capability of detecting targets without any a priori information, and of modifying the knowledge base dynamically. In this dissertation, we present a collaborative method to solve this problem among multiple sensors. When applied to the military vehicles data set collected in a field demo, about 80% unknown target samples can be recognized correctly, while the known target classification ac- curacy stays above 95%

    Target detection and classification using seismic signal processing in unattended ground sensor systems

    This thesis studies the problem of target detection and classification in Unat-tended Ground Sensor (UGS) systems. One of the most challenging problems faced by target identification process is the design of a robust feature vector which is sta-ble and specific to a certain type of vehicle. UGS systems have been used to detect and classify a variety of vehicles. In these systems, acoustic and seismic signals are the most popularly used resources. This thesis studies recent development of target detection and classification techniques using seismic signals. Based on these studies, a new feature extraction algorithm. Spectral Statistics and Wavelet Coef-ficients Characterization (SSWCC), is proposed. This algorithm obtains a robust feature vector extracted from the spectrum, the power spectral density (BSD) and the wavelet coefficients of the signals. Shape statistics is used in both spectral and PSD analysis. These features not only describe the frequency distribution in the spectrum and PSD, but also shows the closeness of the magnitude of spectrum to the normal distribution. Furthermore, the wavelet coefficients are calculated to present the signal in the time-frequency domain. The energy and the distribution of the wavelet coefficients are used in feature extraction as well. After the features are obtained, principal component analysis (PGA) is used to reduce the dimension of the features and optimize the feature vector. Minimum-distance classifier and k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classifier are used to carry out the classification. Experimental results show that SSWCC provides a robust feature set for target identification. The overall performance level can reach as high as 90%

    Energy-Efficient Self-Organization of Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks for Ground Target Tracking

    With the developments in computing and communication technologies, wireless sensor networks have become popular in wide range of application areas such as health, military, environment and habitant monitoring. Moreover, wireless acoustic sensor networks have been widely used for target tracking applications due to their passive nature, reliability and low cost. Traditionally, acoustic sensor arrays built in linear, circular or other regular shapes are used for tracking acoustic sources. The maintaining of relative geometry of the acoustic sensors in the array is vital for accurate target tracking, which greatly reduces the flexibility of the sensor network. To overcome this limitation, we propose using only a single acoustic sensor at each sensor node. This design greatly improves the flexibility of the sensor network and makes it possible to deploy the sensor network in remote or hostile regions through air-drop or other stealth approaches. Acoustic arrays are capable of performing the target localization or generating the bearing estimations on their own. However, with only a single acoustic sensor, the sensor nodes will not be able to generate such measurements. Thus, self-organization of sensor nodes into virtual arrays to perform the target localization is essential. We developed an energy-efficient and distributed self-organization algorithm for target tracking using wireless acoustic sensor networks. The major error sources of the localization process were studied, and an energy-aware node selection criterion was developed to minimize the target localization errors. Using this node selection criterion, the self-organization algorithm selects a near-optimal localization sensor group to minimize the target tracking errors. In addition, a message passing protocol was developed to implement the self-organization algorithm in a distributed manner. In order to achieve extended sensor network lifetime, energy conservation was incorporated into the self-organization algorithm by incorporating a sleep-wakeup management mechanism with a novel cross layer adaptive wakeup probability adjustment scheme. The simulation results confirm that the developed self-organization algorithm provides satisfactory target tracking performance. Moreover, the energy saving analysis confirms the effectiveness of the cross layer power management scheme in achieving extended sensor network lifetime without degrading the target tracking performance

    Survey and Systematization of Secure Device Pairing

    Secure Device Pairing (SDP) schemes have been developed to facilitate secure communications among smart devices, both personal mobile devices and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Comparison and assessment of SDP schemes is troublesome, because each scheme makes different assumptions about out-of-band channels and adversary models, and are driven by their particular use-cases. A conceptual model that facilitates meaningful comparison among SDP schemes is missing. We provide such a model. In this article, we survey and analyze a wide range of SDP schemes that are described in the literature, including a number that have been adopted as standards. A system model and consistent terminology for SDP schemes are built on the foundation of this survey, which are then used to classify existing SDP schemes into a taxonomy that, for the first time, enables their meaningful comparison and analysis.The existing SDP schemes are analyzed using this model, revealing common systemic security weaknesses among the surveyed SDP schemes that should become priority areas for future SDP research, such as improving the integration of privacy requirements into the design of SDP schemes.     Development of mobile agent framework in wireless sensor networks for multi-sensor collaborative processing

    Recent advances in processor, memory and radio technology have enabled production of tiny, low-power, low-cost sensor nodes capable of sensing, communication and computation. Although a single node is resource constrained with limited power, limited computation and limited communication bandwidth, these nodes deployed in large number form a new type of network called the wireless sensor network (WSN). One of the challenges brought by WSNs is an efficient computing paradigm to support the distributed nature of the applications built on these networks considering the resource limitations of the sensor nodes. Collaborative processing between multiple sensor nodes is essential to generate fault-tolerant, reliable information from the densely-spatial sensing phenomenon. The typical model used in distributed computing is the client/server model. However, this computing model is not appropriate in the context of sensor networks. This thesis develops an energy-efficient, scalable and real-time computing model for collaborative processing in sensor networks called the mobile agent computing paradigm. In this paradigm, instead of each sensor node sending data or result to a central server which is typical in the client/server model, the information processing code is moved to the nodes using mobile agents. These agents carry the execution code and migrate from one node to another integrating result at each node. This thesis develops the mobile agent framework on top of an energy-efficient routing protocol called directed diffusion. The mobile agent framework described has been mapped to collaborative target classification application.     Dynamic Target Classification in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Information exploitation schemes with high-accuracy and low computational cost play an important role in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This thesis studies the problem of target classification in WSNs. Specifically, due to the resource constraints and dynamic nature of WSNs, we focus on the design of the energy-efficient solutionwith high accuracy for target classification in WSNs. Feature extraction and classification are two intertwined components in pattern recognition. Our hypothesis is that for each type of target, there exists an optimal set of features in conjunction with a specific classifier, which can yield the best performance in terms of classification accuracy using least amount of computation, measured by the number of features used. Our objective is to find such an optimal combination of features and classifiers. Our study is in the context of applications deployed in a wireless sensor network (WSN) environment, composed of large number of small-size sensors with their own processing, sensing and networking capabilities powered by onboard battery supply. Due to the extremely limited resources on each sensor platform, the decision making is prune to fault, making sensor fusion a necessity. We present a concept, referred to as dynamic target classification in WSNs. The main idea is to dynamically select the optimal combination of features and classifiers based on the probability that the target to be classified might belong to a certain category. We use two data sets to validate our hypothesis and derive the optimal combination sets by minimizing a cost function. We apply the proposed algorithm to a scenario of collaborative target classification among a group of sensors which are selected using information based sensor selection rule in WSNs. Experimental results show that our approach can significantly reduce the computational time while at the same time, achieve better classification accuracy without using any fusion algorithm, compared with traditional classification approaches, making it a viable solution in practice
