Frontiers of beam diagnostics in plasma accelerators: measuring the ultra-fast and ultra-cold
Advanced diagnostics are essential tools in the development of plasma-based accelerators. The accurate measurement of the quality of beams at the exit of the plasma channel is crucial to optimize the parameters of the plasma accelerator. 6D electron beam diagnostics will be reviewed with emphasis on emittance measurement, which is particularly complex due to large energy spread and divergence of the emerging beams, and on femtosecond bunch length measurements
A user's guide for the signal processing software for image and speech compression developed in the Communications and Signal Processing Laboratory (CSPL), version 1
A complete documentation of the software developed in the Communication and Signal Processing Laboratory (CSPL) during the period of July 1985 to March 1986 is provided. Utility programs and subroutines that were developed for a user-friendly image and speech processing environment are described. Additional programs for data compression of image and speech type signals are included. Also, programs for the zero-memory and block transform quantization in the presence of channel noise are described. Finally, several routines for simulating the perfromance of image compression algorithms are included
Towards 'smart lasers': self-optimisation of an ultrafast pulse source using a genetic algorithm
Short-pulse fibre lasers are a complex dynamical system possessing a broad
space of operating states that can be accessed through control of cavity
parameters. Determination of target regimes is a multi-parameter global
optimisation problem. Here, we report the implementation of a genetic algorithm
to intelligently locate optimum parameters for stable single-pulse mode-locking
in a Figure-8 fibre laser, and fully automate the system turn-on procedure.
Stable ultrashort pulses are repeatably achieved by employing a compound
fitness function that monitors both temporal and spectral output properties of
the laser. Our method of encoding photonics expertise into an algorithm and
applying machine-learning principles paves the way to self-optimising `smart'
optical technologies
MAPPING BPEL PROCESSES TO DIAGNOSTIC MODELS
Web services are loosely-coupled, self-contained, and self-describing software modules that perform a predetermined task. These services can be linked together to develop an appli cation that spans multiple organizations. This linking is referred to as a composition of web services. These compositions potentially can help businesses respond more quickly and more cost-effectively to changing market conditions. Compositions can be specified using a high- level workflow process language.
A fault or problem is a defect in a software or software component. A system is said to have a failure if the service it delivers to the user deviates from compliance with the system specification for a specified period of time. A problem causes a failure. Failures are often referred to as symptoms of a problem. A problem can occur on one component but a failure is detected on another component. This suggests a need to be able to determine a problem based on failures. This is referred to as fault diagnosis.
This thesis focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of a diagnostic module that performs automated mapping of a high-level specification of a web services composition to a diagnostics model. A diagnosis model expresses the relationship between problems and potential symptoms. This mapping can be done by a third party service that is not part of the application resulting from the composition of the web services. Automation will allow a third party to do diagnosis for a large number of compositions and should be less error-prone
Continuous maintenance and the future – Foundations and technological challenges
High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ‘big data’ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product. Future of continuous maintenance within the Industry 4.0 context also identifies the role of IoT, standards and cyber security
The FLASHForward Facility at DESY
The FLASHForward project at DESY is a pioneering plasma-wakefield
acceleration experiment that aims to produce, in a few centimetres of ionised
hydrogen, beams with energy of order GeV that are of quality sufficient to be
used in a free-electron laser. The plasma wave will be driven by high-current
density electron beams from the FLASH linear accelerator and will explore both
external and internal witness-beam injection techniques. The plasma is created
by ionising a gas in a gas cell with a multi-TW laser system, which can also be
used to provide optical diagnostics of the plasma and electron beams due to the
<30 fs synchronisation between the laser and the driving electron beam. The
operation parameters of the experiment are discussed, as well as the scientific

Conceptual design study for heat exhaust management in the ARC fusion pilot plant
The ARC pilot plant conceptual design study has been extended beyond its
initial scope [B. N. Sorbom et al., FED 100 (2015) 378] to explore options for
managing ~525 MW of fusion power generated in a compact, high field (B_0 = 9.2
T) tokamak that is approximately the size of JET (R_0 = 3.3 m). Taking
advantage of ARC's novel design - demountable high temperature superconductor
toroidal field (TF) magnets, poloidal magnetic field coils located inside the
TF, and vacuum vessel (VV) immersed in molten salt FLiBe blanket - this
follow-on study has identified innovative and potentially robust power exhaust
