    Collaboration in a multi-user game: impacts of an awareness tool on mutual modeling

    This paper presents an experimental research that focuses on collaboration in a multi-player game. The aim of the project is to study the cognitive impacts of awareness tools, i.e., artifacts that allow users of a collaborative system to be aware of what is going on in the joint virtual environment. The focus is on finding an effect on performance as well as on the representation an individual builds of what his partner knows, plans and intends to do (i.e., mutual modeling). We find that using awareness tools has a significant effect by improving task performance. However, the players who were provided with this tool did not show any improvement of their mutual modeling. Further analysis on contrasted groups revealed that there was an effect of the awareness tool on mutual modeling for players who spent a large amount of time using the too

    Privacy-Respecting Smart Video Surveillance Based on Usage Control Enforcement

    This research introduces a conceptual framework for enforcing privacy-related restrictions in smart video surveillance systems based on danger levels and incident types to be handled. It increases the selectivity of surveillance by restricting data processing to individuals associated to incidents under investigation. Constraints are enforced by usage control, which is instantiated for video surveillance for the first time and enables tailoring such systems to comply with data protection law

    An organizational framework for the use of web-based tools in ""Virtual"" project teams

    The project management of virtual teams differs from that of traditional ones. Traditional project risks like complexity, the uncertainty of factors influencing the project, and the high interdependency of project tasks must be managed alongside changed temporal, geographic, and cultural dimensions. Numerous researchers have investigated the factors influencing the success of virtual teams, but little research has been done to understand how to align technology with team and project tasks. When investigating virtual team technology, mediation should be considered as a central theme, while new web-based project management tools are likely to affect project management processes, particularly for virtual teams. This thesis investigates how virtual project teams should select and use Internet/web-based tools to improve the team's performance and the satisfaction of its members. In the last three years I have observed, questioned, and interviewed 28 project teams with 167 team members in Germany and South Africa. The sampling and analyses of these teams were approached using grounded theory and aimed at developing a resultant theory. The major theoretical contribution of my research is a holistic framework relating the effects on virtual project teams of Internet/web-based tools. The goal of my research was to develop a theory to explain the selection and use of web-based tools by virtual teams operating in different contexts, and to explain and illustrate the consequences of the use of different tool combinations. My results contribute to practice by providing a number of guidelines for management of virtual teams as well as knowledge required by companies wishing to launch projects with virtual teams. Differing performances of teams can in many cases be attributed to such conditions as: limited Internet availability and bandwidth; lack of training for certain tools; the wrong selection and use of tools that are either not integrated/do not support adequate sharing among team members/do not help to manage the tasks and promote transparency about progress made. Definite areas emerged where tool selection and use, or lack of use of appropriate tools, affected performance. My theory also emphasises that besides the project and team context the personal preferences and distance from work of each member are important when selecting and using web-based tools in a distributed work setting. While communication is the heart of project teams, sharing is the soul of project teams that are virtual and use web-based tools. Task awareness is a key influencing the team members' satisfaction

    User-centered design of an interactive social service concept for elderly people

    The population is greying rapidly. Technologies are booming to maintain independence and wellbeing of the elderly people. Many designs and researches are particularly focused on physiological and safety needs of the elderly people. Though technologies have capabilities to affect the social aspects of the elderly people in a positive way, there are fewer researches commenced to date. The main purpose of this thesis work is to find out the needs of the elderly people and design appropriate technological solution for the elderly people addressing those needs using User Centered Design Approach. Various data collection methods such as semi-structured thematic interviews, observation and diary method were utilized to collect user needs. Then user data were consolidated using affinity diagram and the needs were classified using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Based on the user studies and the literature review of existing technologies, the need for social technology was figured out and the design phase involved the development of Social TV prototype. The design process was iterative in terms of creating scenarios and storyboards as well as User Environment Design to attain simplicity in design. Then the mid-fidelity prototype of social TV named ElderTV was developed to demonstrate the concept. The evaluation of the prototype was conducted utilizing sociability heuristics for social TV where the designed prototype was compared against each heuristics rules and these rules served as design guidelines during the design phase of the prototype. The resulted social TV concept for elderly people is designed to address elderly peoples’ needs to strengthen the existing social ties. The concept is expected to extend TV viewing activity of the elderly people into shared experience by allowing them to communicate with a circle of friends and families. The prototype is intended to illustrate how elderly people can share feeling of togetherness while watching television and alleviate the loneliness and isolation of the elderly
