Studies on Spinal Fusion from Computational Modelling to ‘Smart’ Implants
Low back pain, the worldwide leading cause of disability, is commonly treated with lumbar interbody fusion surgery to address degeneration, instability, deformity, and trauma of the spine. Following fusion surgery, nearly 20% experience complications requiring reoperation while 1 in 3 do not experience a meaningful improvement in pain. Implant subsidence and pseudarthrosis in particular present a multifaceted challenge in the management of a patient’s painful symptoms. Given the diversity of fusion approaches, materials, and instrumentation, further inputs are required across the treatment spectrum to prevent and manage complications.
This thesis comprises biomechanical studies on lumbar spinal fusion that provide new insights into spinal fusion surgery from preoperative planning to postoperative monitoring. A computational model, using the finite element method, is developed to quantify the biomechanical impact of temporal ossification on the spine, examining how the fusion mass stiffness affects loads on the implant and subsequent subsidence risk, while bony growth into the endplates affects load-distribution among the surrounding spinal structures. The computational modelling approach is extended to provide biomechanical inputs to surgical decisions regarding posterior fixation. Where a patient is not clinically pre-disposed to subsidence or pseudarthrosis, the results suggest unilateral fixation is a more economical choice than bilateral fixation to stabilise the joint.
While finite element modelling can inform pre-surgical planning, effective postoperative monitoring currently remains a clinical challenge. Periodic radiological follow-up to assess bony fusion is subjective and unreliable. This thesis describes the development of a ‘smart’ interbody cage capable of taking direct measurements from the implant for monitoring fusion progression and complication risk. Biomechanical testing of the ‘smart’ implant demonstrated its ability to distinguish between graft and endplate stiffness states. The device is prepared for wireless actualisation by investigating sensor optimisation and telemetry. The results show that near-field communication is a feasible approach for wireless power and data transfer in this setting, notwithstanding further architectural optimisation required, while a combination of strain and pressure sensors will be more mechanically and clinically informative. Further work in computational modelling of the spine and ‘smart’ implants will enable personalised healthcare for low back pain, and the results presented in this thesis are a step in this direction

Aggregated understanding of characteristics of wheat straw node and internode with their interfacial bonding mechanisms
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University London.The demand for the efficient utilisation of straw biomass requires detailed analyses of its fundamental chemical structures, morphological complexity, individual cell wall components and the correlation of physicochemical to mechanical properties. The study involved two main areas: understanding the details of microstructure and characterisation/differentiation of properties of various profiled wheat straw. Comprehensive and systematic experimental programmes were therefore designed in order to thoroughly investigate the node and internode of wheat straw with quantitative appraisals and qualitative interpretations. This could contribute towards its valorisation in bio-refinery pathways. The sophisticated morphology of node and internode, inner and outer surface was investigated. It was found that the morphology across node area has a great variety when the longitudinal profile is investigated in the upwards direction to grain head. A 3D image of nodes illustrated the dense core with elliptical shaped rings organised in order to provide the echanical strength to the overall stem. The variation of cell wall composition across wheat straw node and internode showed that node yielded slightly higher Klason lignin, extractives and ash content than internode, which could be related to their morphology, precisely the higher ash and extractives content in the node are explained by thicker epidermis tissue. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of node and internode were differentiated and the effects of a combination of mild physical pre-treatment were monitored. The results indicated: i) the reduction of waxes from the outer surface, ii) significantly lower (P < 0.05) extractives and iii) the dissolution of silicon (Si weight %) on the outer surface of node and internode. The tensile strength of nodes and internodes after pre-treatments also resulted in a significant increase (P < 0.05). The accumulated characteristic data enabled the investigation of interfacial properties and bonding mechanisms of the inner and outer surface of wheat straw with thermosetting resins. Different surface functionalities and anatomical sections, altered the bonding performance, i.e. waxes and silica concentrated on the outer surface inhibited the quality of the interface. Nevertheless, the treatment improved interface (P < 0.05) between resins and the micro-porous surface of wheat straw by causing the microcellular structure of straw to expand and hence inspire the mechanical entanglement on a micro level upon resin solidification.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research (EPSRC

Sinembargo, a lo largo de las dos últimas décadas, este sistema se ha convertidoen el estándar de-facto para los servicios de Alta Velocidad en la mayoría depaíses desarrollados.El sistema ERTMS se compone de tres subsistemas principales: 1) el Sistemade Control Ferroviario Europeo (ETCS, por sus siglas en inglés), que actúacomo aplicación de señalización; 2) el sistema Euroradio, que a su vez estádividido en dos subsistemas, el Módulo de Seguridad Funcional (SFM, porsus siglas en inglés), y el Módulo de Comunicación Funcional (CFM, porsus siglas en inglés); y 3) el sistema de comunicaciones subyacente, GSM-R,que transporta la información intercambiada entre el sistema embarcado enel tren (OBU, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Centro de Bloqueo por Radio(RBC, por sus siglas en inglés). El sistema de señalización ETCS soporta tresniveles dependiendo del nivel de prestaciones soportadas. En el nivel 3 seintroduce la posibilidad de trabajar con bloques móviles en lugar de bloquesfijos definidos en la vía. Esto implica que la distancia de avance entre dos trenesconsecutivos puede ser reducida a una distancia mínima en la que se garanticela seguridad del servicio, aumentando por tanto la capacidad del corredorferroviario. Esta distancia de seguridad viene determinada por la combinaciónde la distancia de frenado del tren y el retraso de las comunicaciones deseñalización. Por lo tanto, se puede afirmar que existe una relación directaentre los retrasos y la confiabilidad de las transmisiones de las aplicaciones deseñalización y la capacidad operacional de un corredor ferroviario. Así pues,el estudio y mejora de los sistemas de comunicaciones utilizados en ERTMSjuegan un papel clave en la evolución del sistema ERTMS. Asimismo, unaoperatividad segura en ERTMS, desde el punto de vista de las comunicacionesimplicadas en la misma, viene determinada por la confiabilidad de lascomunicaciones, la disponibilidad de sus canales de comunicación, el retrasode las comunicaciones y la seguridad de sus mensajes.Unido este hecho, la industria ferroviaria ha venido trabajando en ladigitalización y la transición al protocolo IP de la mayor parte de los sistemasde señalización. Alineado con esta tendencia, el consorcio industrial UNISIGha publicado recientemente un nuevo modelo de comunicaciones para ERTMSque incluye la posibilidad, no solo de operar con el sistema tradicional,basado en tecnología de conmutación de circuitos, sino también con un nuevosistema basado en IP. Esta tesis está alineada con el contexto de migraciónactual y pretende contribuir a mejorar la disponibilidad, confiabilidad yseguridad de las comunicaciones, tomando como eje fundamental los tiemposde transmisión de los mensajes, con el horizonte puesto en la definición deuna próxima generación de ERTMS, definida en esta tesis como NGERTMS.En este contexto, se han detectado tres retos principales para reforzar laresiliencia de la arquitectura de comunicaciones del NGERTMS: 1) mejorarla supervivencia de las comunicaciones ante disrupciones; 2) superar laslimitaciones actuales de ERTMS para enviar mensajes de alta prioridad sobretecnología de conmutación de paquetes, dotando a estos mensajes de un mayorgrado de resiliencia y menor latencia respecto a los mensajes ordinarios; y3) el aumento de la seguridad de las comunicaciones y el incremento de ladisponibilidad sin que esto conlleve un incremento en la latencia.Considerando los desafíos previamente descritos, en esta tesis se proponeuna arquitectura de comunicaciones basada en el protocolo MPTCP, llamadaMP-CFM, que permite superar dichos desafíos, a la par que mantener laretrocompatibilidad con el sistema de comunicaciones basado en conmutaciónde paquetes recientemente propuesto por UNISIG. Hasta el momento, esta esla primera vez que se propone una arquitectura de comunicaciones completacapaz de abordar los desafíos mencionados anteriormente. Esta arquitecturaimplementa cuatro tipos de clase de servicio, los cuales son utilizados porlos paquetes ordinarios y de alta prioridad para dos escenarios distintos; unescenario en el que ambos extremos, el sistema embarcado o OBU y el RBC,disponen de múltiples interfaces de red; y otro escenario transicional en el cualel RBC sí tiene múltiples interfaces de red pero el OBU solo dispone de unaúnica interfaz. La arquitectura de comunicaciones propuesta para el entornoferroviario ha sido validada mediante un entorno de simulación desarrolladopara tal efecto. Es más, dichas simulaciones demuestran que la arquitecturapropuesta, ante disrupciones de canal, supera con creces en términos derobustez el sistema diseñado por UNISIG. Como conclusión, se puede afirmarque en esta tesis se demuestra que una arquitectura de comunicaciones basadade MPTCP cumple con los exigentes requisitos establecidos para el NGERTMSy por tanto dicha propuesta supone un avance en la evolución del sistema deseñalización ferroviario europeo

Revenue maximization problems in commercial data centers
PhD ThesisAs IT systems are becoming more important everyday, one of the main concerns is that users may
face major problems and eventually incur major costs if computing systems do not meet the expected
performance requirements: customers expect reliability and performance guarantees, while
underperforming systems loose revenues. Even with the adoption of data centers as the hub of
IT organizations and provider of business efficiencies the problems are not over because it is extremely
difficult for service providers to meet the promised performance guarantees in the face of
unpredictable demand. One possible approach is the adoption of Service Level Agreements (SLAs),
contracts that specify a level of performance that must be met and compensations in case of failure.
In this thesis I will address some of the performance problems arising when IT companies sell
the service of running ‘jobs’ subject to Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. In particular, the aim
is to improve the efficiency of service provisioning systems by allowing them to adapt to changing
demand conditions.
First, I will define the problem in terms of an utility function to maximize. Two different models
are analyzed, one for single jobs and the other useful to deal with session-based traffic. Then,
I will introduce an autonomic model for service provision. The architecture consists of a set of
hosted applications that share a certain number of servers. The system collects demand and performance
statistics and estimates traffic parameters. These estimates are used by management policies
which implement dynamic resource allocation and admission algorithms. Results from a number of
