Energy Efficient XPath Query Processing on Wireless XML Streaming Data
An energy efficient way of disseminating XML data to several mobile clients is broadcast. Information such as alert on emergencies, election results and sporting event results can be of interest to large number of mobile clients. Since eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is widely used for information exchange, wireless information services require an energy efficient XML data dissemination. XML Path (XPath) represents selective data required by mobile clients. XPath query processing involves two performance metrics, namely tune-in time and access time. In this paper, we propose a novel structure for streaming XML data called Path Stream Group Level (PSGL) node by exploiting the tree structure of XML document. It possesses various small indices such as level, child, sibling, attribute, text for selective download of XML data by mobile clients. It organizes data based on the level of XML document tree and groups XML elements with same XML path prefix to conserve battery power at mobile clients. Experimental results show that proposed method has reduced tune-in time when compared with existing approaches. Hence PSGL approach enhances performance with energy conservation for processing various types of XPath queries
Access Interfaces for Open Archival Information Systems based on the OAI-PMH and the OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive Services
In recent years, a variety of digital repository and archival systems have
been developed and adopted. All of these systems aim at hosting a variety of
compound digital assets and at providing tools for storing, managing and
accessing those assets. This paper will focus on the definition of common and
standardized access interfaces that could be deployed across such diverse
digital respository and archival systems. The proposed interfaces are based on
the two formal specifications that have recently emerged from the Digital
Library community: The Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting
(OAI-PMH) and the NISO OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive Services
(OpenURL Standard). As will be described, the former allows for the retrieval
of batches of XML-based representations of digital assets, while the latter
facilitates the retrieval of disseminations of a specific digital asset or of
one or more of its constituents. The core properties of the proposed interfaces
are explained in terms of the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information
System (OAIS).Comment: Accepted paper for PV 2005 "Ensuring Long-term Preservation and

eBank UK: linking research data, scholarly communication and learning
This paper includes an overview of the changing landscape of scholarly communication and describes outcomes from the innovative eBank UK project, which seeks to build links from e-research through to e-learning. As introduction, the scholarly knowledge cycle is described and the role of digital repositories and aggregator services in linking data-sets from Grid-enabled projects to e-prints through to peer-reviewed articles as resources in portals and Learning Management Systems, are assessed. The development outcomes from the eBank UK project are presented including the distributed information architecture, requirements for common ontologies, data models, metadata schema, open linking technologies, provenance and workflows. Some emerging challenges for the future are presented in conclusion
Developing a Framework to Implement Public Key Infrastructure Enabled Security in XML Documents
This paper concentrates on proposing a framework to implement the PKI enables security in XML documents, by defining a common framework and processing rules that can be shared across applications using common tools, avoiding the need for extensive customization of applications to add security. The Framework reuses the concepts, algorithms and core technologies of legacy security systems while introducing changes necessary to support extensible integration with XML. This allows interoperability with a wide range of existing infrastructures and across deployments. Currently no strict security models and mechanisms are available that can provide specification and enforcement of security policies for XML documents. Such models are crucial in order to facilitate a secure dissemination of XML documents, containing information of different sensitivity levels, among (possibly large) user communities
TypEx : a type based approach to XML stream querying
We consider the topic of query evaluation over semistructured information streams, and XML data streams in particular. Streaming evaluation methods are necessarily eventdriven, which is in tension with high-level query models; in general, the more expressive the query language, the harder it is to translate queries into an event-based implementation with finite resource bounds
DTD level authorization in XML documents with usage control
[Summary]: In recent years an increasing amount of semi-structured data has become important to humans and programs. XML promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is rapidly emerging as the new standard language for semi-structured data representation and exchange on the Internet. XML documents may contain private information that cannot be shared by all user communities. So securing XML data is becoming increasingly important and several approaches have been designed to protect information in a website. However, these approaches typically are used at file system level, rather than for the data in XML documents. Usage control has been considered as the next generation access control model with distinguishing properties of decision continuity. Usage control enables finer-grained control
over usage of digital objects than that of traditional access control policies and models.
In this paper, we present a usage control model to protect
information distributed on the web, which allows the access
restrictions directly at DTD-level and XML document-level.
