    EKF/UKF-based channel estimation for robust and reliable communications in V2V and IIoT

    Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are characterized by integrating computation, communication, and physical system. In typical CPS application scenarios, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and Industry Internet of Things (IIoT), due to doubly selective fading and non-stationary channel characteristics, the robust and reliable end-to-end communication is extremely important. Channel estimation is a major signal processing technology to ensure robust and reliable communication. However, the existing channel estimation methods for V2V and IIoT cannot effectively reduce intercarrier interference (ICI) and lower the computation complexity, thus leading to poor robustness. Aiming at this challenge, according to the channel characteristics of V2V and IIoT, we design two channel estimation methods based on the Bayesian filter to promote the robustness and reliability of end-to-end communication. For the channels with doubly selective fading and non-stationary characteristics of V2V and IIoT scenarios, in the one hand, basis extended model (BEM) is used to further reduce the complexity of the channel estimation algorithm under the premise that ICI can be eliminated in the channel estimation. On the other hand, aiming at the non-stationary channel, a channel estimation and interpolation method based on extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) Bayesian filters to jointly estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) and time-varying time domain autocorrelation coefficient is adopted. Through the MATLAB simulation, the robustness and reliability of end-to-end communication for V2V and IIoT are promoted by the proposed algorithms

    Channel Estimation and ICI Cancelation in Vehicular Channels of OFDM Wireless Communication Systems

    Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme increases bandwidth efficiency (BE) of data transmission and eliminates inter symbol interference (ISI). As a result, it has been widely used for wideband communication systems that have been developed during the past two decades and it can be a good candidate for the emerging communication systems such as fifth generation (5G) cellular networks with high carrier frequency and communication systems of high speed vehicles such as high speed trains (HSTs) and supersonic unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs). However, the employment of OFDM for those upcoming systems is challenging because of high Doppler shifts. High Doppler shift makes the wideband communication channel to be both frequency selective and time selective, doubly selective (DS), causes inter carrier interference (ICI) and destroys the orthogonality between the subcarriers of OFDM signal. In order to demodulate the signal in OFDM systems and mitigate ICIs, channel state information (CSI) is required. In this work, we deal with channel estimation (CE) and ICI cancellation in DS vehicular channels. The digitized model of the DS channels can be short and dense, or long and sparse. CE methods that perform well for short and dense channels are highly inefficient for long and sparse channels. As a result, for the latter type of channels, we proposed the employment of compressed sensing (CS) based schemes for estimating the channel. In addition, we extended our CE methods for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) scenarios. We evaluated the CE accuracy and data demodulation fidelity, along with the BE and computational complexity of our methods and compared the results with the previous CE procedures in different environments. The simulation results indicate that our proposed CE methods perform considerably better than the conventional CE schemes

    Signal Detection for OFDM-Based Virtual MIMO Systems under Unknown Doubly Selective Channels, Multiple Interferences and Phase Noises

    In this paper, the challenging problem of signal detection under severe communication environment that plagued by unknown doubly selective channels (DSCs), multiple narrowband interferences (NBIs) and phase noises (PNs) is investigated for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based virtual multiple-input multiple-output (OFDM-V-MIMO) systems. Based on the Variational Bayesian Inference framework, a novel iterative algorithm for joint signal detection, DSC, NBI and PN estimations is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate quick convergence of the proposed algorithm, and after convergence, the bit-error-rate performance of the proposed signal detection algorithm is very close to that of the ideal case which assumes perfect channel state information, no PN, and known positions and powers of NBIs plus additive white Gaussian noise. Furthermore, simulation results show that the proposed signal detection algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.published_or_final_versio

    Estimation and detection techniques for doubly-selective channels in wireless communications

    A fundamental problem in communications is the estimation of the channel. The signal transmitted through a communications channel undergoes distortions so that it is often received in an unrecognizable form at the receiver. The receiver must expend significant signal processing effort in order to be able to decode the transmit signal from this received signal. This signal processing requires knowledge of how the channel distorts the transmit signal, i.e. channel knowledge. To maintain a reliable link, the channel must be estimated and tracked by the receiver. The estimation of the channel at the receiver often proceeds by transmission of a signal called the 'pilot' which is known a priori to the receiver. The receiver forms its estimate of the transmitted signal based on how this known signal is distorted by the channel, i.e. it estimates the channel from the received signal and the pilot.     A new subspace method for blind estimation of selective MIMO-STBC channels

    In this paper, a new technique for the blind estimation of frequency and/or time-selective multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels under space-time block coding (STBC) transmissions is presented. The proposed method relies on a basis expansion model (BEM) of the MIMO channel, which reduces the number of parameters to be estimated, and includes many practical STBC-based transmission scenarios, such as STBC-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), space-frequency block coding (SFBC), time-reversal STBC, and time-varying STBC encoded systems. Inspired by the unconstrained blind maximum likelihood (UML) decoder, the proposed criterion is a subspace method that efficiently exploits all the information provided by the STBC structure, as well as by the reduced-rank representation of the MIMO channel. The method, which is independent of the specific signal constellation, is able to blindly recover the MIMO channel within a small number of available blocks at the receiver side. In fact, for some particular cases of interest such as orthogonal STBC-OFDM schemes, the proposed technique blindly identifies the channel using just one data block. The complexity of the proposed approach reduces to the solution of a generalized eigenvalue (GEV) problem and its computational cost is linear in the number of sub-channels.     Equalization Techniques of Control and Non-Payload Communication Links for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In the next years, several new applications involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for public and commercial uses are envisaged. In such developments, since UAVs are expected to operate within the public airspace, a key issue is the design of reliable control and non-payload communication (CNPC) links connecting the ground control station to the UAV. At the physical layer, CNPC design must cope with time- and frequency-selectivity (so-called double selectivity) of the wireless channel, due to lowaltitude operation and flight dynamics of the UAV. In this paper, we consider the transmission of continuous phase modulated (CPM) signals for UAV CNPC links operating over doubly-selective channels. Leveraging on the Laurent representation for a CPM signal, we design a two-stage receiver: the first one is a linear time-varying (LTV) equalizer, synthesized under either the zero-forcing (ZF) or minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion; the second one recovers the transmitted symbols from the pseudo-symbols of the Laurent representation in a simple recursive manner. In addition to LTV-ZF and LTV-MMSE equalizers, their widely-linear versions are also developed, to take into account the possible noncircular features of the CPM signal. Moreover, relying on a basis expansion model (BEM) of the doubly-selective channel, we derive frequency-shift versions of the proposed equalizers, by discussing their complexity issues and proposing simplified implementations. Monte Carlo numerical simulations show that the proposed receiving structures are able to satisfactorily equalize the doubly-selective channel in typical UAV scenarios
