Jews in East Norse Literature
This book explores the portrayal of Jews and Judaism in medieval Danish and Swedish literary and visual culture. Drawing on over 100 manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art, the author describes the various, often contradictory, images ranging from antisemitism and anti-Judaism to the elevation of Jews as morally exemplary figures. It includes new editions of 54 East Norse texts with English translations
[EN] Vernacular architecture is often said to be adapted to the place and the way of life of its inhabitants. But societies and their cultures are not static. Behaviour and environment change and, with them, so does the way it is built. At the same time, this type of architecture has brought together qualities and achieved a degree of harmony between nature, building and community that has not always managed to be emulated by the modern architectural profession. Thus, an apparent contradiction arises: how to preserve the know-how of these environments in change. The synthesis between preservation and adaptation seems to be resolved in learning: what lessons from the vernacular can be drawn and applied to contemporary planning despite the transformations? To approach the answer, the research is based on a background of studies: on the general context of rural transformation in a perspective where change seems inevitable; on vernacular architecture, its study and some criticism of certain trends of modernity; and on the specific context of research in Burkina Faso. On this basis, the work is situated in two scenarios: that of traditional Mossi architecture in the village of Baasneere (Centre-North Region), built, inhabited and immersed in a process of change similar to that of other traditional habitats in the country; that of the modern discipline and profession of architecture in Burkina Faso, with different attitudes towards the vernacular throughout the historical periods of the country's urbanisation.
Each scenario suggests specific research questions that are addressed by means of a literature review on each topic, a field study with participant observation, open and semi-structured interviews, graphic documentation, and the creation of sheets to record cases of traditional dwellings and their changes. In the first scenario, the observation of the transformations affecting vernacular architecture, justified by social and cultural changes, makes it possible to identify some conflicts and lessons. In the second scenario, a rapprochement of the discipline towards the local can be seen in certain tendencies, definitely put into practice in some cases of development cooperation projects. It seems to be in this field of work that some of the lessons of the vernacular find their most direct application. Finally, the research approach opens up to propose a reflection on the points in common with other contexts at the global level. If a particular form of progress has triggered similar changes in rural environments globally, alternative ways of looking at it should lead to common solutions. In short, the consideration of vernacular environments, arising from relations of cooperation and symbiosis, could have the significance, in the first half of the 21st century, of awakening a certain awareness of adequacy and showing possible ways of action to work on the real adaptation of our environments and the rootedness of our societies.Lidón De Miguel, M. Work and occupation in French and English mental hospitals, c.1918-1939
This open access book demonstrates that, while occupation has been used to treat the mentally disordered since the early nineteenth century, approaches to its use have varied across different countries and in different time periods. Comparing how occupation was used in French and English mental institutions between 1918 and 1939, one hundred years after the heyday of moral therapy, the book is an essential read for those researching the history of mental health and medicine more generally. It provides an overview of the legislation, management structures and financial conditions that affected mental institutions in France and England, and contributed to their differing responses to the new theories of occupational therapy emerging from the USA and Germany during the interwar period. -- Provided by publisher

Enduring Displacement, Enduring Violence: Camps, Closure, and Exile In/After Return (Experiences of Burundian Refugees in Tanzania)
“Return home” was the joint message by the Burundian and Tanzanian presidents in 2017, just two years after hundreds of thousands Burundians were recognized as refugees in neighbouring countries, and as more continued to seek refuge or asylum each month. In Tanzania, where refugees are subject to strict encampment, the vast majority of Burundian refugees had previously been refugees at least once before. Many returned to Tanzania less than three years after their prior return to Burundi, which, as camps were closed, had been framed as a “durable solution” to their displacement. This thesis explores the interrelated dynamics of enduring displacement, encampment, and closure, by drawing on life history research with Burundian refugees in two camps in Tanzania (2017-8), as well as semi-structured interviews with government and humanitarian staff, and ethnographic methods. Empirically, this dissertation contributes to knowledge by tracing the diverse prior trajectories of current Burundian refugees, both within and beyond camp boundaries, challenging there-and-back-again geographical imaginary of refuge management. It highlights an understudied but constitutive aspect of camps—their ultimate closures—by recounting refugees’ memories of the violent closure of Mtabila camp, as well as its fearful afterlives and present-presence. The violence of past camp closure is part of the violence of current encampment due to its evocation as a a disciplinary dispositif to “encourage” return, threatening and anticipating future violence. State and humanitarian practices “close” and harden space for those deemed “undesirable,” through forced encampment, camp closures, and coerced or forced return. In so doing, they produce and prolong displacement, in which varied spatio-temporalities of violence endure. Burundian refugees’ life histories thus trace the ways displacement endures, and is endured

Globally, police organizations are responsible for solving crimes committed physically in their assigned jurisdictions. Considering that they are committed virtually and not physically in space, this system is not adequate for tackling cybercrimes. In the last decades, thousands of criminals have been using the darkweb, the hidden part of the Internet, to commit crimes without police detection. Indeed, law enforcement agencies are often unable to intervene in cybercrimes due to a lack of financial, human resources and adequate training. One proposed solution to this problem is to foster international collaborations that transcend jurisdictions. However, the literature about international collaboration is outdated and does not consider the challenges caused by technology. As the first study to address this issue, the overall goal of this master’s thesis is to understand international collaborations in police investigations of darkweb crimes. Specifically, this exploratory study seeks to (1) describe and understand the motivations that drive investigators to collaborate outside of their police agency and (2) describe and understand the types of collaboration required to conduct a police investigation on the darkweb. We used an international and police-centric approach through a corpus of 20 interviews with investigators from five countries (Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Sweden). This research draws on the participants' perspectives to appreciate their realities and experiences. Using the traditional thematic analysis, we described five main motivations and three types of collaboration experienced by the subjects. This dissertation connects distinct themes in the literature, generates new knowledge, and establishes the conceptual basis for future research. The results illustrate the relevance and necessity of improving international collaborations to increase the success of police investigations of darkweb-related crimes

Clio-Guide.
Ilona Riek, Markus Wegewitz, Christine Gundermann, Bernhard
