From Personalized Medicine to Population Health: A Survey of mHealth Sensing Techniques
Mobile Sensing Apps have been widely used as a practical approach to collect
behavioral and health-related information from individuals and provide timely
intervention to promote health and well-beings, such as mental health and
chronic cares. As the objectives of mobile sensing could be either \emph{(a)
personalized medicine for individuals} or \emph{(b) public health for
populations}, in this work we review the design of these mobile sensing apps,
and propose to categorize the design of these apps/systems in two paradigms --
\emph{(i) Personal Sensing} and \emph{(ii) Crowd Sensing} paradigms. While both
sensing paradigms might incorporate with common ubiquitous sensing
technologies, such as wearable sensors, mobility monitoring, mobile data
offloading, and/or cloud-based data analytics to collect and process sensing
data from individuals, we present a novel taxonomy system with two major
components that can specify and classify apps/systems from aspects of the
life-cycle of mHealth Sensing: \emph{(1) Sensing Task Creation \&
Participation}, \emph{(2) Health Surveillance \& Data Collection}, and
\emph{(3) Data Analysis \& Knowledge Discovery}. With respect to different
goals of the two paradigms, this work systematically reviews this field, and
summarizes the design of typical apps/systems in the view of the configurations
and interactions between these two components. In addition to summarization,
the proposed taxonomy system also helps figure out the potential directions of
mobile sensing for health from both personalized medicines and population

Quality of Information in Mobile Crowdsensing: Survey and Research Challenges
Smartphones have become the most pervasive devices in people's lives, and are
clearly transforming the way we live and perceive technology. Today's
smartphones benefit from almost ubiquitous Internet connectivity and come
equipped with a plethora of inexpensive yet powerful embedded sensors, such as
accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, and camera. This unique combination has
enabled revolutionary applications based on the mobile crowdsensing paradigm,
such as real-time road traffic monitoring, air and noise pollution, crime
control, and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. Differently from prior
sensing paradigms, humans are now the primary actors of the sensing process,
since they become fundamental in retrieving reliable and up-to-date information
about the event being monitored. As humans may behave unreliably or
maliciously, assessing and guaranteeing Quality of Information (QoI) becomes
more important than ever. In this paper, we provide a new framework for
defining and enforcing the QoI in mobile crowdsensing, and analyze in depth the
current state-of-the-art on the topic. We also outline novel research

Privacy Management and Optimal Pricing in People-Centric Sensing
With the emerging sensing technologies such as mobile crowdsensing and
Internet of Things (IoT), people-centric data can be efficiently collected and
used for analytics and optimization purposes. This data is typically required
to develop and render people-centric services. In this paper, we address the
privacy implication, optimal pricing, and bundling of people-centric services.
We first define the inverse correlation between the service quality and privacy
level from data analytics perspectives. We then present the profit maximization
models of selling standalone, complementary, and substitute services.
Specifically, the closed-form solutions of the optimal privacy level and
subscription fee are derived to maximize the gross profit of service providers.
For interrelated people-centric services, we show that cooperation by service
bundling of complementary services is profitable compared to the separate sales
but detrimental for substitutes. We also show that the market value of a
service bundle is correlated with the degree of contingency between the
interrelated services. Finally, we incorporate the profit sharing models from
game theory for dividing the bundling profit among the cooperative service

Crowdcloud: A Crowdsourced System for Cloud Infrastructure
The widespread adoption of truly portable,
smart devices and Do-It-Yourself computing platforms
by the general public has enabled the rise of new network
and system paradigms. This abundance of wellconnected,
well-equipped, affordable devices, when combined
with crowdsourcing methods, enables the development
of systems with the aid of the crowd. In this
work, we introduce the paradigm of Crowdsourced Systems,
systems whose constituent infrastructure, or a significant
part of it, is pooled from the general public by
following crowdsourcing methodologies. We discuss the
particular distinctive characteristics they carry and also
provide their “canonical” architecture. We exemplify
the paradigm by also introducing Crowdcloud, a crowdsourced
cloud infrastructure where crowd members can
act both as cloud service providers and cloud service
clients. We discuss its characteristic properties and also
provide its functional architecture. The concepts introduced
in this work underpin recent advances in the areas
of mobile edge/fog computing and co-designed/cocreated
systems
Reputation and Reward : Two Sides of the Same Bitcoin
In Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS), the power of the crowd, jointly with the sensing capabilities of the smartphones they wear, provides a new paradigm for data sensing. Scenarios involving user behavior or those that rely on user mobility are examples where standard sensor networks may not be suitable, and MCS provides an interesting solution. However, including human participation in sensing tasks presents numerous and unique research challenges. In this paper, we analyze three of the most important: user participation, data sensing quality and user anonymity. We tackle the three as a whole, since all of them are strongly correlated. As a result, we present PaySense, a general framework that incentivizes user participation and provides a mechanism to validate the quality of collected data based on the users' reputation. All such features are performed in a privacy-preserving way by using the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Rather than a theoretical one, our framework has been implemented, and it is ready to be deployed and complement any existint MCS system
QUOIN: Incentive Mechanisms for Crowd Sensing Networks
Crowd sensing networks play a critical role in big data generation where a large number of mobile devices collect various kinds of data with large-volume features. Although which information should be collected is essential for the success of crowd-sensing applications, few research efforts have been made so far. On the other hand, an efficient incentive mechanism is required to encourage all crowd-sensing participants, including data collectors, service providers, and service consumers, to join the networks. In this article, we propose a new incentive mechanism called QUOIN, which simultaneously ensures Quality and Usability Of INformation for crowd-sensing application requirements. We apply a Stackelberg game model to the proposed mechanism to guarantee each participant achieves a satisfactory level of profits. Performance of QUOIN is evaluated with a case study, and experimental results demonstrate that it is efficient and effective in collecting valuable information for crowd-sensing applications
A Blockchain-Based Reward Mechanism for Mobile Crowdsensing
Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is a novel sensing scenario of cyber-physical-social systems. MCS has been widely adopted in smart cities, personal health care, and environment monitor areas. MCS applications recruit participants to obtain sensory data from the target area by allocating reward to them. Reward mechanisms are crucial in stimulating participants to join and provide sensory data. However, while the MCS applications execute the reward mechanisms, sensory data and personal private information can be in great danger because of malicious task initiators/participants and hackers. This article proposes a novel blockchain-based MCS framework that preserves privacy and secures both the sensing process and the incentive mechanism by leveraging the emergent blockchain technology. Moreover, to provide a fair incentive mechanism, this article has considered an MCS scenario as a sensory data market, where the market separates the participants into two categories: monthly-pay participants and instant-pay participants. By analyzing two different kinds of participants and the task initiator, this article proposes an incentive mechanism aided by a three-stage Stackelberg game. Through theoretical analysis and simulation, the evaluation addresses two aspects: the reward mechanism and the performance of the blockchain-based MCS. The proposed reward mechanism achieves up to a 10% improvement of the task initiator's utility compared with a traditional Stackelberg game. It can also maintain the required market share for monthly-pay participants while achieving sustainable sensory data provision. The evaluation of the blockchain-based MCS shows that the latency increases in a tolerable manner as the number of participants grows.
