A Survey on Subsurface Signal Propagation
Wireless Underground Communication (WUC) is an emerging field that is being developed continuously. It provides secure mechanism of deploying nodes underground which shields them from any outside temperament or harsh weather conditions. This paper works towards introducing WUC and give a detail overview of WUC. It discusses system architecture of WUC along with the anatomy of the underground sensor motes deployed in WUC systems. It also compares Over-the-Air and Underground and highlights the major differences between the both type of channels. Since, UG communication is an evolving field, this paper also presents the evolution of the field along with the components and example UG wireless communication systems. Finally, the current research challenges of the system are presented for further improvement of the WUCs
Precision Agriculture for Crop and Livestock FarmingâBrief Review
In the last few decades, agriculture has played an important role in the worldwide economy. The need to produce more food for a rapidly growing population is creating pressure on crop and animal production and a negative impact to the environment. On the other hand, smart farming technologies are becoming increasingly common in modern agriculture to assist in optimizing agricultural and livestock production and minimizing the wastes and costs. Precision agriculture (PA) is a technology-enabled, data-driven approach to farming management that observes, measures, and analyzes the needs of individual fields and crops. Precision livestock farming (PLF), relying on the automatic monitoring of individual animals, is used for animal growth, milk production, and the detection of diseases as well as to monitor animal behavior and their physical environment, among others. This study aims to briefly review recent scientific and technological trends in PA and their application in crop and livestock farming, serving as a simple research guide for the researcher and farmer in the application of technology to agriculture. The development and operation of PA applications involve several steps and techniques that need to be investigated further to make the developed systems accurate and implementable in commercial environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Privatizing the Metro Card: Transportation Equity in an Open-Loop Smartcard Fare Payment System
The unbanked â individuals who lack a bank account with a mainstream financial institution â are one of the more broadly disadvantaged groups in American society. There is a great deal of demographic overlap between the unbanked as a cohort and other marginalized groups, notably undocumented immigrants, low-income Blacks and Latinos and non-native English speakers. These groups are an important constituency for transportation agencies in that they are more likely to travel by transit than other Americans. As many transit agencies transition their fare payment systems to radio frequency identification (RFID)-based, âcontactlessâ smartcard or open payment technology linked to a riderâs bank account, there are growing opportunities to enhance multi-modalism in passenger trips, reduce operations costs, increase system profitability, and expand access to fare payment media. However, due to equity requirements of the Civil Rights Act, transit agencies must ensure that the smartcard technology also accommodates the unbanked. Ensuring that transit fare payment systems adequately serve the unbanked requires an assessment of New Yorkâs unbanked population beyond that which is available in current academic literature. A 2011 study from the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs identified several New York City neighborhoods with the highest proportions of unbanked and underbanked residents. Through intercept surveys in two of these majority-unbanked neighborhoods â Fordham (Bronx) and Bushwick (Brooklyn) â this study attempts to clarify the travel behavior and fare payment characteristics of the un(der)banked. In addition, this study investigates potential fare policy alternatives in an open payment system that would adequately accommodate the transportation needs of the unbanked. To articulate policy recommendations to meet this objective, this study includes structured interviews with transit fare policy experts in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. These interviews explored how transit agencies can select the most appropriate fare payment technology; effectively partner with retailers and alternative financial services (AFS) to make its new fare payment medium accessible to un(der)banked communities; and establish performance metrics to monitor the fare payment systemâs long-term equity

Disease Surveillance Networks Initiative Global: Final Evaluation
In August 2009, the Rockefeller Foundation commissioned an independent external evaluation of the Disease Surveillance Networks (DSN) Initiative in Asia, Africa, and globally. This report covers the results of the global component of the summative and prospective1 evaluation, which had the following objectives:[1] Assessment of performance of the DSN Initiative, focused on its relevance, effectiveness/impact, and efficiency within the context of the Foundation's initiative support.[2] Assessment of the DSN Initiative's underlying hypothesis: robust trans-boundary, multi-sectoral/cross-disciplinary collaborative networks lead to improved disease surveillance and response.[3] Assessment of the quality of Foundation management (value for money) for the DSN Initiative.[4] Contribute to the field of philanthropy by:a.
