    Architecture for satellite services over cryptographically heterogeneous networks with application into smart grid

    The rapid growth in the demand for Future Internet services with many emerging group applications has driven the development of satellite, which is the preferred delivery mechanism due to its wide area coverage, multicasting capability and speed to deliver affordable future services. Nevertheless, security has been one of the obstacles for both satellite services as well as smart grid group applications, especially with logical/geographical/cryptographic domains spanning heterogeneous networks and regions. In this paper, adaptive security architecture is implemented to protect satellite services for smart grid group applications. The focus is on key management and policy provisioning. Leveraging Group Domain of Interpretation (GDOI) as the standard for smart grid centralized key/policy management architecture, a single Domain of Interpretation (DOI) is deployed and evaluated critically in terms of the added protocol signaling overhead on the satellite system for a fixed-network scenario. This also partially realizes the growing trend towards the use of TCP/IP technology for smart grid applications

    The switching function was primarily entrusted to Layer 2 of the OSI model, i.e. the Data Link Layer. A Layer 2 switch performs forwarding decisions by analyzing the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the destination segment in the frame. The Layer 2 switch checks for the destination address and transmits the packet to the appropriate segment if the address is present in its table of known destinations. If the entry for that address is not present, the switch then forwards the packet to all segments except the one on which it came from. This is known as flooding. When it gets a reply from the destination segment, it learns the location of the new address and adds it to its table of known destinations. As number of users are increasing on the network, the speed and the bandwidth of the network is being stretched to its limits. Earlier, switching was primarily entrusted to Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model, but now there are switches that operate at Layer 3 (Network Layer), Layer 4 (Transport Layer) and Layer 5 (Session Layer) of the OSI model. Going from one layer to the other layer does involve some costs/tradeoffs. My thesis explores the costs and tradeoffs involved with switching based on layers 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the OSI reference model

    Satellite system performance assessment for in-flight entertainment and air traffic control

    Concurrent satellite systems have been proposed for IFE (In-Flight Entertainment) communications, thus demonstrating the capability of satellites to provide multimedia access to users in aircraft cabin. At the same time, an increasing interest in the use of satellite communications for ATC (Air Traffic Control) has been motivated by the increasing load of traditional radio links mainly in the VHF band, and uses the extended capacities the satellite may provide. However, the development of a dedicated satellite system for ATS (Air Traffic Services) and AOC (Airline Operational Communications) seems to be a long-term perspective. The objective of the presented system design is to provide both passenger application traffic access (Internet, GSM) and a high-reliability channel for aeronautical applications using the same satellite links. Due to the constraints in capacity and radio bandwidth allocation, very high frequencies (above 20 GHz) are considered here. The corresponding design implications for the air interface are taken into account and access performances are derived using a dedicated simulation model. Some preliminary results are shown in this paper to demonstrate the technical feasibility of such system design with increased capacity. More details and the open issues will be studied in the future of this research work
