    Design and Implementation of Wireless Modules for Farm Monitoring

    Since the last quarter of the 20th century, technological advancement in the industry has grown exponentially, likewise the agricultural sector. The extent is as far as the use of drones and automated robots on farms. Today wireless automation has become very popular in homes and industries alike since they are considered more efficient, safe and financially viable. Microcontroller applications in the area of wireless automation is very advanced considering the cheap cost compared to PLCs and the general cheap cost of electronic components has driven more funds into researching and further industrializing microcontroller technology. The aim of this Master's Thesis "Design and Implementation of Wireless Modules for Farm Monitoring" was to plan, design, construct and implement wireless modules to be used to automate, control and monitor a farm. The modules consists of two nodes, each equipped with RF modules to enable communication between the nodes wirelessly. One of the nodes is also connected to a computer (the raspberry pi), enabling access to the modules remotely via internet. This Master's Thesis describes the software and hardware tasks necessary for the total operation of the modules such as the control of IOs, communication between the wireless nodes and the control of the nodes via internet.     Live Wire - A Low-Complexity Body Channel Communication System for Landmark Identification

    This paper presents a robust simplex Body Channel Communication (BCC) system aimed at providing an interactive infrastructure solution for visually impaired people. Compared to existing BCC solutions, it provides high versatility, weara- bility and installability in an environment in a low complexity hardware-software solution. It operates with a ground referred transmitter (TX) and it is based on an asynchronous thresh- old receiver (RX) architecture. Synchronization, demodulation and packetizing and threshold control are completely software defined and implemented using MicroPython. The RX includes Bluetooth® (BT) radio connectivity and a cell-phone application provides push text-to-speech notifications to a smartphone. The hardware achieves a Packet Error Rate (PER) of ∼0.1 at 550 kHz pulse center frequency, Synchronized-On Off Keying (S- OOK) modulation and 1 kbps data rate, for an average current consumption of 44mA

    SPOT GNSS in Emergency and Location Based Services

    Location Based Systems (LBS) market has emerged exponentially since early 2000 in the wake of growing need for Emergency Relief Applications. The argument of course outstanding is which device outperforms all other in diverse scenarios without failure. While many purpose built LBS are in use, SPOT satellite messenger gained attention for its reliability. This paper summates the system architecture and experimental tests results with those of competing Assisted and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (A/GNSS). Our test bed comprised of 26 test points with pre-established database of GNSS difficulty levels in diverse environments in UNSW. Parameters of interest are availability, accuracy and Time to First Fix (TTFF). Relative benchmarking proves SPOT’s higher TTFF and higher failure rate in general. While High Sensitivity GNSS and Assisted GNSS (MS-Based and MS-Assisted) had higher availability, higher accuracy and lower TTFF. Altogether fewer failure scenarios, trustworthy coverage with cost effectiveness were observed for MS-Based AGNSS which is vital for LBS applications. However reliance on wired or wireless IP network potentially limits the performance in non-existent underlying infrastructure in remote applications. SPOT demonstrated higher TTFF and failure rates in test scenario. On the contrary Assisted GNSS (MS-Based or MS-Assisted) can provide a reliable, cost effective and open source alternative to SPOT satellite messenger with better TTFF, availability and accuracy for consumer and research applications

    Satellite technology in the maritime world : applications and implications

    This dissertation is a study of the widespread utilization of satellite technology in the maritime world, with particular reference to the applications and implications of communication, navigation and remote sensing satellites to shipping and other maritime related fields. A brief look is taken at the general background of satellite technology, including the growth and development and basic techniques as well as categorization of applications. This is followed by a more detailed view of the three different areas of the applications of satellite technology, namely maritime communications, marine navigation and maritime meteorology and oceanography. The two well-known satellite-based systems, the INMARSAT System and the Global Positioning System, are both widely used by the maritime community and thus emphasized in this study. Apart from a brief description of those two systems, their applications are examined, their impact on the marine industry is discussed and their future development is investigated in order to obtain an appreciation of their role in the present maritime world. The applications of remote sensing satellites in marine meteorology and oceanography are also discussed. In addition to the above, the impact of the increasing use of satellite technology on maritime education and training is investigated.
