Autonomous Radar-based Gait Monitoring System
Features related to gait are fundamental metrics of human motion [1]. Human gait has been shown to be a valuable and feasible clinical marker to determine the risk of physical and mental functional decline [2], [3]. Technologies that detect changes in peopleâs gait patterns, especially older adults, could support the detection, evaluation, and monitoring of parameters related to changes in mobility, cognition, and frailty. Gait assessment has the potential to be leveraged as a clinical measurement as it is not limited to a specific health care discipline and is a consistent and sensitive test [4].
A wireless technology that uses electromagnetic waves (i.e., radar) to continually measure gait parameters at home or in a hospital without a clinicianâs participation has been proposed as a suitable solution [3], [5]. This approach is based on the interaction between electromagnetic waves with humans and how their bodies impact the surrounding and scattered wireless signals. Since this approach uses wireless waves, people do not need to wear or carry a device on their bodies. Additionally, an electromagnetic wave wireless sensor has no privacy issues because there is no video-based camera.
This thesis presents the design and testing of a radar-based contactless system that can monitor peopleâs gait patterns and recognize their activities in a range of indoor environments frequently and accurately. In this thesis, the use of commercially available radars for gait monitoring is investigated, which offers opportunities to implement unobtrusive and contactless gait monitoring and activity recognition. A novel fast and easy-to-implement gait extraction algorithm that enables an individualâs spatiotemporal gait parameter extraction at each gait cycle using a single FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar is proposed. The proposed system detects changes in gait that may be the signs of changes in mobility, cognition, and frailty, particularly for older adults in individualâs homes, retirement homes and long-term care facilities retirement homes. One of the straightforward applications for gait monitoring using radars is in corridors and hallways, which are commonly available in most residential homes, retirement, and long-term care homes. However, walls in the hallway have a strong âclutterâ impact, creating multipath due to the wide beam of commercially available radar antennas. The multipath reflections could result in an inaccurate gait measurement because gait extraction algorithms employ the assumption that the maximum reflected signals come from the torso of the walking person (rather than indirect reflections or multipath) [6].
To address the challenges of hallway gait monitoring, two approaches were used: (1) a novel signal processing method and (2) modifying the radar antenna using a hyperbolic lens. For the first approach, a novel algorithm based on radar signal processing, unsupervised learning, and a subject detection, association and tracking method is proposed. This proposed algorithm could be paired with any type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or single-input multiple-output (SIMO) FMCW radar to capture human gait in a highly cluttered environment without needing radar antenna alteration. The algorithm functionality was validated by capturing spatiotemporal gait values (e.g., speed, step points, step time, step length, and step count) of people walking in a hallway. The preliminary results demonstrate the promising potential of the algorithm to accurately monitor gait in hallways, which increases opportunities for its applications in institutional and home environments. For the second approach, an in-package hyperbola-based lens antenna was designed that can be integrated with a radar module package empowered by the fast and easy-to-implement gait extraction method. The system functionality was successfully validated by capturing the spatiotemporal gait values of people walking in a hallway filled with metallic cabinets. The results achieved in this work pave the way to explore the use of stand-alone radar-based sensors in long hallways for day-to-day long-term monitoring of gait parameters of older adults or other populations.
The possibility of the coexistence of multiple walking subjects is high, especially in long-term care facilities where other people, including older adults, might need assistance during walking. GaitRite and wearables are not able to assess multiple peopleâs gait at the same time using only one device [7], [8]. In this thesis, a novel radar-based algorithm is proposed that is capable of tracking multiple people or extracting walking speed of a participant with the coexistence of other people. To address the problem of tracking and monitoring multiple walking people in a cluttered environment, a novel iterative framework based on unsupervised learning and advanced signal processing was developed and tested to analyze the reflected radio signals and extract walking movements and trajectories in a hallway environment. Advanced algorithms were developed to remove multipath effects or ghosts created due to the interaction between walking subjects and stationary objects, to identify and separate reflected signals of two participants walking at a close distance, and to track multiple subjects over time. This method allows the extraction of walking speed in multiple closely-spaced subjects simultaneously, which is distinct from previous approaches where the speed of only one subject was obtained. The proposed multiple-people gait monitoring was assessed with 22 participants who participated in a bedrest (BR) study conducted at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).
The system functionality also was assessed for in-home applications. In this regard, a cloud-based system is proposed for non-contact, real-time recognition and monitoring of physical activities and walking periods within a domestic environment. The proposed system employs standalone Internet of Things (IoT)-based millimeter wave radar devices and deep learning models to enable autonomous, free-living activity recognition and gait analysis. Range-Doppler maps generated from a dataset of real-life in-home activities are used to train deep learning models. The performance of several deep learning models was evaluated based on accuracy and prediction time, with the gated recurrent network (GRU) model selected for real-time deployment due to its balance of speed and accuracy compared to 2D Convolutional Neural Network Long Short-Term Memory (2D-CNNLSTM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models. In addition to recognizing and differentiating various activities and walking periods, the system also records the subjectâs activity level over time, washroom use frequency, sleep/sedentary/active/out-of-home durations, current state, and gait parameters. Importantly, the system maintains privacy by not requiring the subject to wear or carry any additional devices
Managing healthcare transformation towards P5 medicine (Published in Frontiers in Medicine)
Health and social care systems around the world are facing radical organizational, methodological and technological paradigm changes to meet the requirements for improving quality and safety of care as well as efficiency and efficacy of care processes. In this theyâre trying to manage the challenges of ongoing demographic changes towards aging, multi-diseased societies, development of human resources, a health and social services consumerism, medical and biomedical progress, and exploding costs for health-related R&D as well as health services delivery. Furthermore, they intend to achieve sustainability of global health systems by transforming them towards intelligent, adaptive and proactive systems focusing on health and wellness with optimized quality and safety outcomes.
The outcome is a transformed health and wellness ecosystem combining the approaches of translational medicine, 5P medicine (personalized, preventive, predictive, participative precision medicine) and digital health towards ubiquitous personalized health services realized independent of time and location. It considers individual health status, conditions, genetic and genomic dispositions in personal social, occupational, environmental and behavioural context, thus turning health and social care from reactive to proactive. This requires the advancement communication and cooperation among the business actors from different domains (disciplines) with different methodologies, terminologies/ontologies, education, skills and experiences from data level (data sharing) to concept/knowledge level (knowledge sharing). The challenge here is the understanding and the formal as well as consistent representation of the world of sciences and practices, i.e. of multidisciplinary and dynamic systems in variable context, for enabling mapping between the different disciplines, methodologies, perspectives, intentions, languages, etc. Based on a framework for dynamically, use-case-specifically and context aware representing multi-domain ecosystems including their development process, systems, models and artefacts can be consistently represented, harmonized and integrated. The response to that problem is the formal representation of health and social care ecosystems through an system-oriented, architecture-centric, ontology-based and policy-driven model and framework, addressing all domains and development process views contributing to the system and context in question.

Viimeisten kolmen vuosikymmenen aikana satelliittinavigointi on kehittynyt ammatti ja sotilaskÀyttÀjien tekniikasta kaikkien saatavilla olevaksi tekniikaksi. Varsinkin viimeisen 15 vuoden aikana, kun vastaanottimet alkoivat pienentyÀ ja halpenivat, on lisÀÀntynyt mÀÀrÀ yrityksiÀ, jotka toimittavat GPS-laitteita satoihin erilaisiin sovelluksiin. Kaikille moderneille tekniikoille on myös tyypillistÀ, ettÀ tutkimukseen ja siihen liittyvÀÀn vastaanottimien kehittÀmiseen on kÀytetty valtavasti rahaa, mikÀ on johtanut huomattavaan parantumiseen vastaanottimen suorituskyvyssÀ.
GPS-vastaanottimien kehitystyön lisÀksi uusien maailmanlaajuisten satelliittinavigointijÀrjestelmien, kuten venÀlÀisen GLONASS, kiinalaisen BeiDou- ja eurooppalaisen Galileo-jÀrjestelmien kÀyttöönotto tarjoaa entistÀ enemmÀn mahdollisuuksia suorituskyvyn parantamiseen. SekÀ GPS ettÀ nÀmÀ uudet jÀrjestelmÀt ovat myös ottaneet kÀyttöön uudentyyppisiÀ signaalirakenteita, jotka voivat tarjota parempilaatuisia havaintoja ja siten parantaa kaikkien vastaanottimien suorituskykyÀ.
Lopuksi menetelmÀt, kuten PPP ja RTK, jotka aiemmin olivat varattu ammattikÀyttÀjille, ovat tulleet kuluttajamarkkinoille mahdollistaen ennennÀkemÀttömÀn suorituskyvyn jokaiselle satelliittinavigointivastaanottimien kÀyttÀjÀlle.
TÀssÀ opinnÀytetyössÀ arvioidaan tÀmÀn kehityksen vaikutusta sekÀ suorituskykyyn ettÀ vastaanottimen arkkitehtuuriin.
TyössÀ esitellÀÀn yksityiskohtaisesti FGI:ssÀ kehitetyn ohjelmistopohjaisen vastaanottimen, FGI-GSRx:n. TÀmÀn vastaanottimen avulla on työssÀ arvioitu miten sekÀ uudet konstellaatiot ettÀ uudet nykyaikaiset signaalit ja niitten seurantamenetelmÀt vaikuttavat suorituskykyyn ja vastaanotin arkkitehtuuriin. TÀmÀn lisÀksi on arvioitu PPP- ja RTK-tarkkuuspaikannusmenetelmien vaikutus FinnRefCORS-verkkoa kÀyttÀen useiden erityyppisten vastaanottimien kanssa, mukaan lukien kuluttajalaatuiset vastaanottimet.
Tulokset osoittavat, ettÀ enemmÀn konstellaatioita ja signaaleja kÀytettÀessÀ paikannusratkaisun tarkkuus paranee 3 metristÀ 1,4 metriin hyvissÀ olosuhteissa ja yli 10-kertaiseksi tiheÀsti rakennetuissa kaupungeissa, jossa kÀytettÀvissÀ olevien signaalien mÀÀrÀ kasvaa kertoimella 2 kÀytettÀessÀ kolmea konstellaatiota. Uusia moderneja modulaatiotekniikoita, kuten BOC-modulaatiota, kÀytettÀessÀ tulokset osoittavat Galileo-ratkaisun tarkkuuden paranevan lÀhes 25%:lla ja esitelty uusi signaalinkÀsittelymenetelmÀ lisÀÀ tÀllaisen tarkkuuden saatavuutta 50%:sta lÀhes 100%:iin. Lopuksi tarkkuuspaikannusmenetelmien tulokset osoittavat, ettÀ 15 cm:n tarkkuus on saavutettavissa, mikÀ on merkittÀvÀ parannus verrattuna 1,4 metrin tarkkuuteen.
NÀiden parannusten saavuttamiseksi on olennaista, ettÀ itse vastaanotin on mukautettu hyödyntÀmÀÀn nÀitÀ uusia signaaleja ja konstellaatioita. TÀmÀ tarkoittaa, ettÀ nykyaikaisten kuluttajamarkkinoiden vastaanottimien suunnittelu on haastavaa ja monissa tapauksissa ohjelmistopohjainen vastaanotin olisi parempi ja halvempi valinta kuin uusien mikropiirien kehittÀminen.For the last three decades, satellite navigation has evolved from being a technology for professional and military users to a technology available for everyone. Especially during the last 15 years, since the receivers started getting smaller and cheaper, there has been an increasing number of companies delivering Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled devices for hundreds of different kind of applications. Typical for any modern technology, there has also been an enormous amount of money spent on research and accompanied receiver development resulting in an immense increase
in receiver performance.
In addition to the development efforts on GPS receivers the introduction of new global navigation satellite systems such as the Russian Globalnaja Navigatsionnaja Sputnikovaja Sistema (GLONASS), the Chinese BeiDou, and the European Galileo systems offers even more opportunities for improved performance. Both GPS and these new systems have also introduced new types of signal structures that can provide better quality observations and even further improve the performance of all receivers.
Finally, methods like Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and Real Time Kinematic (RTK) that earlier were reserved for professional users have entered into the consumer market enabling never before seen performance for every user of satellite navigation receivers.
This thesis will assess the impact of this development on both performance as well as on receiver architecture.
The design of the software defined receiver developed at FGI, the FGI-GSRx, is presented in detail in this thesis. This receiver has then been used to assess the impact of using multiple constellations as well as new novel signal processing methods for modern signals. To evaluate the impact of PPP and RTK methods the FinnRef Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network has been used together with several different types of receivers including consumer grade off the shelf receivers.
The results show that when using more constellations and signals the accuracy of the positioning solution improves from3 meters to 1.4 meters in open sky conditions and by more than a factor 10 in severe urban canyons. For severe urban canyons the available also increases by a factor 2 when using three constellations. When using new modern modulation techniques like high order BOC results show an accuracy improvement for a Galileo solution of almost 25 % and the presented new signal processing method increase the availability of such an accuracy from 50 % to almost 100 %. Finally, results from precise point positioning methods show that an accuracy of 15 cm is achievable, which is a significant improvement compared to an accuracy of 1.4 m for a standalone multi constellation solution.
To achieve these improvements, it is essential that the receiver itself is adapted to make use of these new signals and constellations. This means that the design of modern consumer market receivers is challenging and in many cases a software define receiver would be a better and cheaper choice than developing new Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)âs

Medical Robotics
The first generation of surgical robots are already being installed in a number of operating rooms around the world. Robotics is being introduced to medicine because it allows for unprecedented control and precision of surgical instruments in minimally invasive procedures. So far, robots have been used to position an endoscope, perform gallbladder surgery and correct gastroesophogeal reflux and heartburn. The ultimate goal of the robotic surgery field is to design a robot that can be used to perform closed-chest, beating-heart surgery. The use of robotics in surgery will expand over the next decades without any doubt. Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a revolutionary approach in surgery. In MIS, the operation is performed with instruments and viewing equipment inserted into the body through small incisions created by the surgeon, in contrast to open surgery with large incisions. This minimizes surgical trauma and damage to healthy tissue, resulting in shorter patient recovery time. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the state-of-art, to present new ideas, original results and practical experiences in this expanding area. Nevertheless, many chapters in the book concern advanced research on this growing area. The book provides critical analysis of clinical trials, assessment of the benefits and risks of the application of these technologies. This book is certainly a small sample of the research activity on Medical Robotics going on around the globe as you read it, but it surely covers a good deal of what has been done in the field recently, and as such it works as a valuable source for researchers interested in the involved subjects, whether they are currently âmedical roboticistsâ or not

A DEVSECOPS APPROACH FOR DEVELOPING AND DEPLOYING CONTAINERIZED CLOUD-BASED SOFTWARE ON SUBMARINES
There are unique challenges for using secure cloud services in disconnected resource-constrained environments and with controlled data. To address those challenges, this thesis introduces a tactical-edge platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution with a declarative-delivery method for submarine Consolidated Afloat Network Enterprise Services (CANES) operating systems. The PaaS is adapted from the Department of Defenseâs Big Bang core elements for submarine-focused outcomes. Using the Team Submarine Project Blue initiative as a case study, this thesis consists of a feasibility study for running containerized applications on different submarine-compatible baselines and applying a prototype declarative software-delivery method called ZARF. We demonstrated the feasibility of using ZARF for packaging and automated deployment of the Project Blue PaaS and its software to the submarine CANES infrastructure. This research culminated in successful integration tests on a current and future submarine hardware and software baseline. The thesis documents the execution of the research, lessons learned, and recommendations for the Navyâs path forward for development of secure software and declarative deployment in air-gapped environments.Outstanding ThesisLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release.
