Sustainable modular IoT solution for smart cities applications supported by machine learning algorithms
The Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities are nowadays a big trend, but with
the proliferation of these systems several challenges start to appear and put in jeopardy
the acceptance by the population, mainly in terms of sustainability and environmental
issues. This Thesis introduces a new system composed by a modular IoT smart node that
is self-configurable and sustainable with the support of machine learning techniques, as
well as the research and development to achieve a innovative solution considering data
analysis, wireless communications and hardware and software development. For all these,
concepts are introduced, research methodologies, tests and results are presented and discussed
as well as the development and implementation. The developed research and
methodology shows that Random Forest was the best choice for the data analysis in the
self-configuration of the hardware and communication systems and that Edge Computing
has an advantage in terms of energy efficiency and latency. The autonomous communication
system was able to create a 65% more sustainable node, in terms of energy
consumption, with only a 13% decrease in quality of service. The modular approach for
the smart node presented advantages in the integration, scalability and implementation
of smart cities projects when facing traditional implementations, reducing up to 45% the
energy consumption of the overall system and 60% of messages exchanged, without compromising
the system performance. The deployment of this new system will help Smart
Cities, in a worldwide fashion, to decrease their environmental issues and comply with
rules and regulations to reduce CO2 emission.
A quantum-resistant advanced metering infrastructure
This dissertation focuses on discussing and implementing a Quantum-Resistant Advanced
Metering Infrastructure (QR-AMI) that employs quantum-resistant asymmetric and symmetric
cryptographic schemes to withstand attacks from both quantum and classical computers. The
proposed solution involves the integration of Quantum-Resistant Dedicated Cryptographic
Modules (QR-DCMs) within Smart Meters (SMs). These QR-DCMs are designed to embed
quantum-resistant cryptographic schemes suitable for AMI applications. In this sense, it
investigates quantum-resistant asymmetric cryptographic schemes based on strong cryptographic
principles and a lightweight approach for AMIs. In addition, it examines the practical deployment
of quantum-resistant schemes in QR-AMIs. Two candidates from the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standardization process,
FrodoKEM and CRYSTALS-Kyber, are assessed due to their adherence to strong cryptographic
principles and lightweight approach. The feasibility of embedding these schemes within QRDCMs in an AMI context is evaluated through software implementations on low-cost hardware,
such as microcontroller and processor, and hardware/software co-design implementations using
System-on-a-Chip (SoC) devices with Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) components.
Experimental results show that the execution time for FrodoKEM and CRYSTALS-Kyber schemes
on SoC FPGA devices is at least one-third faster than software implementations. Furthermore, the
achieved execution time and resource usage demonstrate the viability of these schemes for AMI
applications. The CRYSTALS-Kyber scheme appears to be a superior choice in all scenarios,
except when strong cryptographic primitives are necessitated, at least theoretically. Due to the
lack of off-the-shelf SMs supporting quantum-resistant asymmetric cryptographic schemes, a QRDCM embedding quantum-resistant scheme is implemented and evaluated. Regarding hardware
selection for QR-DCMs, microcontrollers are preferable in situations requiring reduced processing
power, while SoC FPGA devices are better suited for those demanding high processing power.
The resource usage and execution time outcomes demonstrate the feasibility of implementing
AMI based on QR-DCMs (i.e., QR-AMI) using microcontrollers or SoC FPGA devices.
Tecnologia (do inglês, National Institute of Standards and Technology - NIST), FrodoKEM e
Quanto à escolha do hardware
QR-AMI, usando microcontroladores e dispositivos SoC FPGA
A Review of Digital Twins and their Application in Cybersecurity based on Artificial Intelligence
The potential of digital twin technology is yet to be fully realized due to
its diversity and untapped potential. Digital twins enable systems' analysis,
design, optimization, and evolution to be performed digitally or in conjunction
with a cyber-physical approach to improve speed, accuracy, and efficiency over
traditional engineering methods. Industry 4.0, factories of the future, and
digital twins continue to benefit from the technology and provide enhanced
efficiency within existing systems. Due to the lack of information and security
standards associated with the transition to cyber digitization, cybercriminals
have been able to take advantage of the situation. Access to a digital twin of
a product or service is equivalent to threatening the entire collection. There
is a robust interaction between digital twins and artificial intelligence
tools, which leads to strong interaction between these technologies, so it can
be used to improve the cybersecurity of these digital platforms based on their
integration with these technologies. This study aims to investigate the role of
artificial intelligence in providing cybersecurity for digital twin versions of
various industries, as well as the risks associated with these versions. In
addition, this research serves as a road map for researchers and others
interested in cybersecurity and digital security.Comment: 60 pages, 8 Figures, 15 Table
Cybersecurity for Industry 4.0 in the current literature: A reference framework
The cybersecurity issues represent a complex challenge for all companies committing to Industry 4.0 paradigm. On the other hand, the characterization of cybersecurity concept within Industry 4.0 contexts proved to be an emerging and relevant topic in the recent literature.
The paper proposes to analyse, through a systematic literature review approach, the way in which the existing state of art deals with the cybersecurity issues in Industry 4.0 contexts. In particular, the focus will be on the investigation of the main elements associated with cybersecurity theme (i.e. asset involved into cyber-attacks, system vulnerabilities, cyber threats, risks and countermeasures) within those industrial contexts where physical systems (machines, shop floors, plants) are connected each other via the Internet. Four areas of analysis are defined: definitions of cybersecurity and Industry 4.0 concepts, the industrial focus of the analysed studies, the cybersecurity characterization and the management attempts of cybersecurity issues. Through the literature review analysis, a framework of the main features characterizing each area is discussed, providing interesting evidences for future research and applications
Nowadays the Internet of Things is part of everyday life of all of us, with more
and more devices connected to each other. In light of the progress made in this
area, the research and development work presented in this dissertation revealed a
huge set of work associated with this topic, in particular related to the application
of wireless sensor networks to different IoT projects.
However, we note that there is no such complex system as the one developed,
which is a decentralized, flexible and adaptable WSN. Which is capable of being
implemented in several medium and large IoT systems. This has become possible
because the communication between the nodes constituents of this, is carried out
by a radio module that supports the LoRa technology. The main aim of the developed network is to monitor elements of the environment where it is implemented,
such as temperature, humidity, luminosity, among others, and to act on the control
processto increase the efficiency of the system in question, coverage.
This network was applied to an existing irrigation system, which has been
substantially improved by the changes introduced. These changes allow individual
watering without human intervention of the different areas of the garden according
to their specific characteristics, thus reducing the unnecessary expenditure of water
used in irrigation and consequently the reduction of the water footprint
Design and Implementation of a Low-Cost Cloud-Powered Home Automation System
synergy of these technologies such as intelligent lighting, entertainment (audio and video), security, heating, ventilation
and air conditioning in the home for the automation of control and monitoring activities within that home is typically
known as Home Automation today. The Home global home automation market size was approximated to be about USD
45.8 billion in just 2017 and is projected to reach as high as USD 114 Billion at the tail of 2025 with a compound annual
growth rate of 12.1% in this forecast period [1]. North America is projected to emerge as the leading region in the global
landscape during the forecast period, but West African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon are generally seen to
have a much lower adoption rate when it comes to emerging technologies like these. The low adoption rate is due in part
to the high cost of implementing a home Automation solution coupled with the general economic state of these developing
countries. The interest and investment of the tech industry within the countries also play a role in this context. This paper
explores the design and implementation of a relatively less costly cloud-based home automation architecture built partly
on open-source technology and widely available resources. The solution was realized using a raspberry pi as the field
gateway and primary controller. Arduino Uno microcontroller were used as the secondary controller. The highly robust
Microsoft Azure cloud was used, enabling the representation, testing, deploying, and managing applications and systems
and services on the cloud and at the edge. In demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed system, three systems were
integrated: intelligent lighting, basic access security and remote monitoring. These would be monitored and controlled by
a simple mobile app whose communication with the field devices is made possible through the Microsoft Azure IoT
solution
