From XML to XML: The why and how of making the biodiversity literature accessible to researchers
We present the ABLE document collection, which consists of a set of annotated volumes of the Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History). These follow our work on automating the markup of scanned copies of the biodiversity literature, for the purpose of supporting working taxonomists. We consider an enhanced TEI XML markup language, which is used as an intermediate stage in translating from the initial XML obtained from Optical Character Recognition to the target taXMLit. The intermediate representation allows additional information from external sources such as a taxonomic thesaurus to be incorporated before the final translation into taXMLit
Technology-enhanced Learning for Cultural Heritage
This paper demonstrates an approach for technology-enhanced learning, joining analysis, collaborative work, mobile learning (m-learning in short), discussion, and learning-by-authoring approaches in order to achieve more active participa-tion of the learners during the perceiving of knowledge and to stimulate their creative thinking. The learners visit famous churches, monasteries, museums, etc., where they can see samples of the Bulgarian Iconography supported by m-learning. They rely on the GUIDE@HAND platform containing personalized collections presenting location, historical data, pictures, etc. Multimedia and other information resources are delivered through the “Virtual Encyclopaedia of the East-Christian Art” digital library (BIDL) - a web-based environment for regis-tration, documentation, access and exploration of Bulgarian iconographical arte-facts. The main goal of the learners is to create their own learning material/project, analysing the available resources. The presented use case also involves collabora-tive work and discussion approaches in order to attract learners and support them in a more active participation in the learning process
Audiovisual research collections and their preservation
The basic problem of primary audio and video research materials is clearly shown by the survey: A great and important part of the entire heritage is still outside archival custody in the narrower sense, scattered over many institutions in fairy small collections, and even in private hands. reservation following generally accepted standards can only be carried out effectively if collections represent critical mass. Specialised audiovisual archives will solve their problems, as they will sooner or later succeed in getting appropriate funding to achieve their aims. A very encouraging example is the case of the Netherlands. The larger audiovisual research archives will also manage, more or less autonomously, the transfer of contents in time. For a considerable part of the research collections, however, the concept of cooperative models and competence centres is the only viable model to successfullly safeguard their holdings. Their organisation and funding is a considerable challenge for the scientific community. TAPE has significantly raised awareness of the fact that, unless action is swiftly taken, the loss of audiovisual materials is inevitable. TAPE’s international and regional workshops were generally overbooked. While TAPE was already underway, several other projects for the promotion of archives have received grants from organisations other than the European Commission, inter alia support for the St. Petersburg Phonogram Archive, and the Folklore Archive in Tirana, obviously as a result of a better understanding of the need for audiovisual preservation. When the TAPE project started its partners assumed that cooperative projects would fail because of the notorious distrust of researchers, specifically in the post-communist countries. One of the most encouraging surprises was to learn that, at least in the most recent survey, it became apparent that this social obstacle is fading out. TAPE may have contributed to this important development

Learning by Doing in the Context of Modern Information and Media Literacy of Students in “Library and Information Management” in ULSIT Using the Digital Collection “Bulgarian Revival”
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the effectiveness of learning
by doing as a practical tool for managing the training of students in "Library
Management" at the ULSIT, Sofia, Bulgaria, by using the creation of project
'Data Base “Bulgarian Revival Towns” (CD), financed by Bulgarian Ministry
of Education, Youth and Science (1/D002/144/13.10.2011) headed by Prof.
DSc Ivanka Yankova, which aims to create new information resource for the
towns which will serve the needs of scientific researches. By participating in
generating the an array in the database through searching, selection and digitization of documents from these period, at the same time students get an opportunity to expand their skills to work effectively in a team, finding the interdisciplinary, a causal connection between the studied items, objects and subjects and
foremost – practical experience in the field of digitization, information behavior, strategies for information search, etc. This method achieves good results for
the accumulation of sustainable knowledge and it generates motivation to work
in the field of library and information professions
Cultural Heritage Archives on Bulgarian National Radio Platforms
The article describes radio archives as cultural heritage and presents their practical use as integrated resources on different radio platforms. The current situation and plans for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) for preserving and using these repositories are discussed
Survey of Existing Services in the Mathematical Digital Libraries and Repositories in the EuDML Project
This paper presents a survey of the existing services provided by the
digital libraries and repositories on mathematics of the content provider partners
in the EuDML project. The purpose is to support the development of the
concepts, criteria and methods for the continuous evaluation of these and new
relevant existing services. The work was concentrated on the classification of
the relevant services in order to specify a common evaluating structure
