    Design and Development of Web-Based Databases of Current Periodicals at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

    The library of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IITKGP) was the first library in India which attempted to set up an electronic library for its clientele under the auspices of AICTE. While placing the library of IITKGP on Internet, the facilities offered by the WWW are exploited to provide information services of more than 1000 current periodical titles (with hard copy to on-line). This paper begins with a brief description of the electronic resources available in the Central Library, IITKGP. As the web sites are being set up by the libraries of all IITs, it is emphasized that the use of Internet will enable to share their resources in general and periodical publications in particular. Highlights the various types of web-based information services on scholarly journals including electronic journals (full text) which are linked to publishers’ addresses. Discusses the methods, with illustrative examples, associated with the creation of several web-based tools like alphabetical list of periodicals including availability of CD-ROM databases, both in full text as well as abstracting and indexing journals, on-line journals (full text), departmentwise list of periodicals, current arrival list of periodicals, union list of periodicals (3500) subscribed by all IITs for resource sharing purpose and other free on-line services provided by the various publishers. Key word search program, hardware and software requirements, HTML tags to create several hyper linked files, editors and Internet solution for automatic web-page designing are also presented

    Sir epidemic and predator - prey models of fractional-order

    Recently, many deterministic mathematical models such as ordinary differential equations have been extended to fractional models, which are transformed using fractional differential equations. It was believed that these fractional models are more realistic to represent the daily life phenomena. The main focus of this report is to extend the model of a predator-prey and the SIR epidemic models to fractional model. More specifically, the fractional predator-prey model which depend on the availability of a biotic resources was discussed. On the other hand, fractional SIR epidemic model with sub-optimal immunity, nonlinear incidence and saturated recovery rate was also discussed. The fractional ordinary differential equations were defined in the sense of the Caputo derivative. Stability analysis of the equilibrium points of the models for the fractional models were analyzed. Furthermore, the Hopf bifurcation analysis of each model was investigated . The result obtained showed that the model undergo Hopf bifurcation for some values. Throughout the project, the Adams-type predictor-corrector method to obtain the numerical solutions of the fractional models was applied.     Water level monitoring and controlling of water treatment plants using wireless sensors in LabVIEW

    Monitoring and controlling systems are taken as the main entity of any field which can ensure for the effective performance, hence its importance is rising exponentially in industry field. There can be many factors which can bring variations in those systems. This may cease the efficiency of the industry and destruction of industrial equipment. Therefore, monitoring, evaluation and controlling of the variables of any system is significantly important. The main objective of this research is to investigate the process of combining monitoring and controlling of the water level in the distribution tanks of water treatment plants by using wireless sensors network. The design and developed prototype of remote monitoring and controlling system of water levels in various tanks can be used in different parts of the water treatment plants. We have proposed, developed and tested hardware module based on two Arduino Mega2560 boards linked wirelessly by using two NRF transceivers. Remote Arduino is designed to monitor the water flow and the level of the distribution tank besides controlling the water level whenever is necessary. The real time sensors readings obtained are observed by specially designed LabVIEW application using graphical user interface running on a PC connected directly to the local Arduino. The application displays and analyses sensors reading on the front panel. Water level is controlled based on preset values entered by the user. The experimental result and percentage error curve endorse the reliability and feasibility of the proposed system to provide a solution for similar problems in industrial liquids treatment process applications

It first looks at the various channels through which a user can get access to scholarly electronic publications. It then discusses the issues and studies surrounding usability. Some important parameters for measuring the usability of information access systems have been identified. Finally the chapter looks at the major problems facing the users in getting access to scholarly information through today's hybrid libraries, and mentions some possible measures to resolve these problems

    Libraries have supported multiple formats for decades, from paper and microforms to audiovisual tapes and CDs. However, the newest medium, digital transmission, has presented a wider scope of challenges and caused library patrons to question the established and recognized multiformat library. Within the many questions posed, two distinct ones echo repeatedly. The first doubts the need to sustain print in an increasingly digital world, and the second warns of the dangers of relying on a still-developing technology. This article examines both of these positions and concludes that abandoning either format would translate into a failure of service to patrons, both present and future

    Networks without wires: Human networks in the Information Society

    It is the purpose of this paper to argue that the very significant skills we have brought as a profession to making the printed word uniformly and universally available have been overlooked. An electronic environment is being created which is inimical to scholarship and which is largely being designed by commercial and entertainment forces, which are irrelevant to the scholarly process. Even if that environment is modified and the issues described are resolved, it will remain an essentially hostile commercial environment. The academy remains largely unaware of the dangers - particularly in the area of preservation of both primary and secondary research resources. Our electronic house is built on shifting sands and a much more active approach is required from the profession to demonstrate that we can, like Sisyphus, reclimb the hill of bibliographic control and access and use that most basic skill of library school courses - the Organisation of Knowledge - to define scholarly requirements for the emerging information society. It is in fact by ensuring that our human networks are active and effective and by managing the flow of paper-based information effectively that we can best serve our readers, earn their professional respect, and position ourselves to act as guides to rather than bystanders at the information revolution

    Resource sharing and hybrid libraries: the MALIBU Project

    The British electronic libraries programme has funded four projects to develop thinking on so-called hybrid libraries and one of these is MALIBU (Modernising Academic Libraries in British Universities), based at King's College London. Working with the libraries of Oxford and Southampton Universities it will take a very rich set of humanities resources from archives and incunabula to digital products and networked resources and create a seamless single access point to all the available resources. It will also explore how strategies can be developed to make resources available locally as operational services rather than unreliably over the Internet. It does not set out to create its own new tools but rather to find ways of integrating tools already in existence or being developed

    Student Use of the Internet for Research Projects: A Problem? Our Problem? What Can We Do About It?

    The Internet and other electronic media have changed the way undergraduate students conduct research. The effects of this technological change on the role of the professor are still not well understood. This article reports on the findings of a recent study that evaluated the scholarly content of student citations in a political science course and tested two interventions designed to improve their quality. The study finds that these students’ use of electronic sources was not as poor as some may have assumed, and that the quality of bibliographies improved when in-class instruction was combined with academic penalties. This article reflects on the study’s findings, and offers suggestions for how instructors might encourage students to improve the quality of their research
