    Scheduling the Australian football league

    Generating a schedule for a professional sports league is an extremely demanding task. Good schedules have many benefits for the league, such as higher attendance and TV viewership, lower costs, and increased fairness. The Australian Football League is particularly interesting because of an unusual competition format integrating a single round robin tournament with additional games. Furthermore, several teams have multiple home venues and some venues are shared by multiple teams. This paper presents a 3-phase process to schedule the Australian Football League. The resulting solution outperforms the official schedule with respect to minimizing and balancing travel distance and breaks, while satisfying more requirements

    Player Pricing and Valuation of Cricketing Attributes: Exploring the IPL Twenty-Twenty Vision

    In April 2008, BCCI initiated Indian Premier League, a cricket tournament of Twenty-Twenty overs to be played among eight domestic teams. Team owners bid for the services of cricketers for a total of US$ 42 million. Not much is known about how the valuation of cricketers might have occurred. Given the data on final bid prices, cricketing attributes of players, and other relevant information, we try to understand which attributes seem to be important and what could be their relative valuations. We employ the bid and offer curve concept of hedonic price analysis and econometrically establish a relation between the IPL-2008 final bid prices and the player attributes. Number of half centuries, number of wickets taken, and number of stumpings in all four forms of the game, batting average in the twenty-twenty form of the game, batting strike rate in one-day international (ODI), age, nationality, iconic status, and non-cricketing fame seem to be the critical attributes in the valuation of players. With the auction of incumbent and new players for the IPL-2009 underway till February 2009, we hope that the analysis of this kind would facilitate better understanding of player price formation and underscore the predictive value of such data driven analysis.

    An instance data repository for the round-robin sports timetabling problem

    The sports timetabling problem is a combinatorial optimization problem that consists of creating a timetable that defines against whom, when and where teams play games. This is a complex matter, since real-life sports timetabling applications are typically highly constrained. The vast amount and variety of constraints and the lack of generally accepted benchmark problem instances make that timetable algorithms proposed in the literature are often tested on just one or two specific seasons of the competition under consideration. This is problematic since only a few algorithmic insights are gained. To mitigate this issue, this article provides a problem instance repository containing over 40 different types of instances covering artificial and real-life problem instances. The construction of such a repository is not trivial, since there are dozens of constraints that need to be expressed in a standardized format. For this, our repository relies on RobinX, an XML-supported classification framework. The resulting repository provides a (non-exhaustive) overview of most real-life sports timetabling applications published over the last five decades. For every problem, a short description highlights the most distinguishing characteristics of the problem. The repository is publicly available and will be continuously updated as new instances or better solutions become available

    When sports rules go awry

    Wright (Wright, M. OR analysis of sporting rules - A survey. European Journal of Operational Research, 232(1):1-8, 2014) recently presented a survey of sporting rules from an Operational Research (OR) perspective. He surveyed 21 sports, which consider the rules of sports and tournaments and whether changes have led to unintended consequences. The paper concludes: "Overall, it would seem that this is just a taster and there may be plenty more such studies to come". In this paper we present one such study. This is an interdisciplinary paper, which cuts across economics, sport and operational research (OR). We recognize that the paper could have been published in any of these disciplines but for the sake of continuity with the paper that motivated this study, we wanted to publish this paper in an OR journal. We look at specific examples where the rules of sports have led to unforeseen and/or unwanted consequences. We hope that the paper will be especially useful to sports administrators, helping them to review what has not previously worked and also encouraging them to engage with the scientific community when considering making changes. We believe that this is the first time that such a comprehensive review of sporting rules, which have led to unexpected consequences, has been published in the scientific literature

    Time Relaxed Round Robin Tournament and the NBA Scheduling Problem

    This dissertation study was inspired by the National Basketball Association regular reason scheduling problem. NBA uses the time-relaxed round robin tournament format, which has drawn less research attention compared to the other scheduling formats. Besides NBA, the National Hockey League and many amateur leagues use the time-relaxed round robin tournament as well. This dissertation study is the first ever to examine the properties of general time-relaxed round robin tournaments. Single round, double round and multiple round time-relaxed round robin tournaments are defined. The integer programming and constraint programming models for those tournaments scheduling are developed and presented. Because of the complexity of this problem, several decomposition methods are presented as well. Traveling distance is an important factor in the tournament scheduling. Traveling tournament problem defined in the time constrained conditions has been well studied. This dissertation defines the novel problem of time-relaxed traveling tournament problem. Three algorithms has been developed and compared to address this problem. In addition, this dissertation study presents all major constraints for the NBA regular season scheduling. These constraints are grouped into three categories: structural, external and fairness.     Contemporary practices of strength and conditioning coaches in professional cricket

    This study describes the contemporary practices of strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches in male professional cricket. Thirty-three S&C coaches working with international and professional club teams across seven countries completed an online survey. The survey consisted of 45 questions (35 fixed responses and 10 open-ended), with eight sections: (a) background information, (b) muscular strength and power development, (c) speed development, (d) plyometrics, (e) flexibility development, (f) physical testing, (g) technology use, and (h) programing. Most S&C coaches were educated to degree level (97%) or higher, with 91% of degrees being in a sports science related field. Whereas, 73% held S&C and 40% cricket coaching certifications. Isometric type resistance training exercises (94%) were frequently programed by S&C coaches, with squats and deadlifts (including variations) deemed the most important strength development exercises. Ratings of perceived exertion (58%) was most used for determining set loads. Hang clean (64%) and multiple hops/lunges (85%) were the most prescribed Olympic weightlifting and plyometric exercises. Speed gates (85%) were the most used technology-based equipment. Open-ended questions revealed, 45% of S&C coaches believed time constraints, scheduling and fixtures are the main issues faced in their role. Position specific demands (61%) was the predominant method used for individualizing players training strategies. The information presented in this study is valuable for those pursuing or currently working as a S&C coach in professional cricket to align, compare and explain their practices. Furthermore, will provide insight for the wider athlete support team (i.e., sports coaches, physiotherapists) on the practices of S&C coaches
