Wireless Mesh Networks(WMNs) are the outstanding technology to facilitate wireless broadband Internet access to users. Routers in WMN have multiple radio interfaces to which multiple orthogonal/partially overlapping channels are assigned to improve the capacity of WMN. This paper is focused on channel selection problem in WMN since proper channel selection to radio interfaces of mesh router increases the performance of WMN. To access the Internet through WMN, the users have to associate with one of the mesh routers. Since most of the Internet Servers are still in wired networks, the major dominant traffic of Internet users is in downlink direction i.e. from the gateway of WMN to user. This paper proposes a new method of channel selection to improve the user performance in downlink direction of Internet traffic. The method is scalable and completely distributed solution to the problem of channel selection in WMN. The simulation results indicate the significant improvement in user performance

Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Network (MRMC-WMN) has been considered as one of the key technology for the enhancement of network performance. It is used in a number of real-time applications such as disaster management system, transportation system and health care system. MRMC-WMN is a multi-hop network and allows simultaneous data transfer by using multiple radio interfaces. All the radio interfaces are typically assigned with different channels to reduce the effect of co-channel interference. In MRMC-WMN, when two nodes transmit at the same channel in the range of each other, generates co-channel interference and degrades the network throughput. Co-channel interference badly affects the capacity of each link that reduces the overall network performance. Thus, the important task of channel assignment algorithm is to reduce the co-channel interference and enhance the network performance. In this paper, the problem of channel assignment has been addressed for MRMC-WMN. We have proposed an Interference Aware, Topology, Power and Flow Control (ITPFC) Channel Assignment algorithm for MRMC-WMN. This algorithm assignes the suitable channels to nodes, which provides better link capacity and reduces the co-channel interference. In the previous work performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated for a network of 30 nodes. The aim of this paper is to further evaluate the performance of proposed channel assignment algorithm for 40 and 50 nodes network. The results obtained from these networks show the consistent performance in terms of throughput, delay, packet loss and number of channels used per node as compared to LACA, FCPRA and IATC Channel Assignment algorithms

Data collection is an essential task in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In data collection process, the sensor nodes transmit their readings to a common base station called Sink. To avoid a collision, it is necessary to use the appropriate scheduling algorithms for data transmission. On the other hand, multi-channel design is considered as a promising technique to reduce network interference and latency of data collection. This technique allows parallel transmissions on different frequency channels, thus time latency will be reduced. In this paper, we present a new scheduling method for multi-channel WSNs called Balanced Multi Channel Data Collection (Balanced MC-DC) Algorithm. The proposed protocol is based on using both Non-Overlapping Channels (NOC) and Partially Overlapping Channels (POC). It uses a new approach that optimizes the processes of tree construction, channel allocation, transmission scheduling and balancing simultaneously. Extensive simulations confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the existing algorithms in wireless sensor networks

The design and the management of Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are currently associated with the most active research area within the current wireless networking paradigms. WMNs inherit features from existing wireless networking technologies such as WLANs, mobile ad hoc networks. Because WMNs are easy to deploy and with low power consumption, there is a phenomenal growing interest in seeing WMNs as the next wireless backhaul networks, and an alternative to the existing wired infrastructure. The earliest development of WMNs had begun with single-channel single-radio mesh networks. This technology then evolved towards multi-channel single-radio mesh networks, and then to multi-channel multi-radio mesh networks. WMNs operate in North America on IEEE 802.11 2.4 GHz spectrum, which provides up to 11 channels. Despite the availability of 11 channels, only 3 (1, 6, 11) orthogonal channels can be used concurrently. The efficiency of multi-channel multi-radio wireless mesh networks can be improved with the increase of the number of channels used concurrently and of multiple radios. In this study, we investigate how to design a scalable channel assignment and a scheduling algorithm, which both exploit partially overlapping channels in order to increase the throughput in comparison with the one that can be obtained only using three orthogonal channels. In order to accurately take into account the radio interferences, we use the physical interference model to estimate the interferences among wireless links. We then introduce the definition of transmission configurations, which are sets of links, which can transmit concurrently. These links can be assigned with channels of overlapping or orthogonal in nature. We then design a TDMA based scheduling allowing a transmission configuration to transmit concurrently in a time slot. Finally, we evaluate all our algorithms through extensive simulations. Our numerical experiments show that we can gain up to 25% for the throughput by appropriately managing all the available channels

There has been growing interest in using Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) because of their advantages such as easier to scale up and self-organization. We instigate whether increasing the number of available channels through the use of Partially Overlapping Channels (POCs) is always useful for improving the Quality of Service (QoS) of WMNs namely the throughput or delay. For the purpose of this thesis, we design a set of algorithms for: i) Channel assignment; ii) Transmission Configurations (TCs) which is a set of links with the ability of sending data simultaneously; iii) power control; and iv) delivery of packets to their destination in order to take advantage of POCs in WMNs. We evaluate our proposed algorithms by a comprehensive set of numerical experiments. Numerical experiments indicate that using POCs leads not only to increase throughput of networks, but also it can decrease delay of packet delivery
