    Advanced Mechanism Design for Electric Vehicle Charging Scheduling in the Smart Infrastructure

    Electric vehicle (EV) continues to grow rapidly due to low emission and high intelligence. This thesis considers a smart infrastructure (SI) as an EV-centered ecosystem, which is an integrated and connected multi-modal network involving interacting intelligent agents, such as EVs, charging facilities, electric power grids, distributed energy resources, etc. The system modeling paradigm is derived from distributed artificial intelligence and modelled as multi-agent systems (MAS), where the agents are self-interested and reacting strategically to maximize their own benefits. The integration, interaction, and coordination of EVs with SI components will raise various features and challenges on the transportation efficiency, power system stability, and user satisfaction, as well as opportunities provided by optimization, economics, and control theories, and other advanced technologies to engage more proactively and efficiently in allocating the limited charging resources and collaborative decision-making in a market environment. A core challenge in such an EV ecosystem is to trade-off the two objectives of the smart infrastructure, of system-wide efficiency and at the same time the social welfare and individual well-being against agents’ selfishness and collective behaviors. In light of this, scheduling EVs' charging activities is of great importance to ensure an efficient operation of the smart infrastructure and provide economical and satisfactory charging experiences to EV users under the support of two-way flow of information and energy of charging facilities. In this thesis, we develop an advanced mechanism design framework to optimize the charging resource allocation and automate the interaction process across the overall system. The key innovation is to design specific market-based mechanisms and interaction rules, integrated with concepts and principles of mechanism design, scheduling theory, optimization theory, and reinforcement learning, for charging scheduling and dynamic pricing problem in various market structures. Specifically, this research incorporates three synergistic areas: (1) Mathematical modelling for EV charging scheduling. We have developed various mixed-integer linear programs for single-charge with single station, single-charge with multiple stations, and multi-charge with multiple stations in urban or highway environments. (2) Market-based mechanism design. Based on the proposed mathematical models, we have developed particular market-based mechanisms from the resource provider’s prospective, including iterative bidding auction, incentive-compatible auction, and simultaneous multi-round auction. These proposed auctions contain bids, winner determination models, and bidding procedure, with which the designer can compute high quality schedules and preserve users’ privacy by progressively eliciting their preference information as necessary. (3) Reinforcement learning-based mechanism design. We also proposed a reinforcement mechanism design framework for dynamic pricing-based demand response, which determines the optimal charging prices over a sequence of time considering EV users’ private utility functions. The learning-based mechanism design has effectively improved the long-term revenue despite highly-uncertain requests and partially-known individual preferences of users. This Ph.D. dissertation presents a market prospective and unlocks economic opportunities for MAS optimization with applications to EV charging related problems; furthermore, applies AI techniques to facilitate the evolution from manual mechanism design to automated and data-driven mechanism design when gathering, distributing, storing, and mining data and state information in SI. The proposed advanced mechanism design framework will provide various collaboration opportunities with the research expertise of reinforcement learning with innovative collective intelligence and interaction rules in game theory and optimization tools, as well as offers research thrust to more complex interfaces in intelligent transportation system, smart grid, and smart city environments

    Peer-to-Peer Trading for Enhancing Electric Vehicle Charging with Renewable Energy

    Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly increasing in popularity as greater attention is paid to climate change and decarbonisation, however the environmental benefits that EVs offer can only be fully realised through the use of renewable energy for their charging. Smart charging solutions are essential for managing the impact of EVs and increasing the utilisation of renewable energy, however, questions remain over whether low-voltage distribution networks can accommodate the upcoming increases in EV charging demand. This thesis addresses both the challenge of increasing the utilisation of renewable energy for EV charging and also the importance of ensuring safe operation of low-voltage distribution networks with the integration of EV charging, distributed renewable energy generation, battery storage and vehicle-to-grid technologies. Chapter 3 examines a scenario where houses equipped with solar photovoltaic panels and EV charge points endeavour to sell surplus solar energy and the use of their EV charge point to visiting EVs that require charging. A peer-to-peer auction is proposed, with a novel matching mechanism presented to increase the amount of EV charging completed using solar energy without any knowledge about future EV arrivals. Chapter 4 presents a full peer-to-peer trading model of Network Impact Tokens and Phase Impact Tokens between houses in a low-voltage network. The Impact Tokens guarantee that all EV charging and renewable energy generation does not cause the network to exceed its voltage, current or transformer loading limits, while ensuring each house retains control over its energy usage, requiring no real-time monitoring or sensors in the network, and no privacy issues are encountered. The Network and Phase Impact Token approach is further verified in Chapter 5, as it forms the basis of a novel approach for Distribution System Operators to evaluate the maximum EV hosting capacity of their networks in conjunction with renewable energy generation and battery storage. The maximum EV capacity results are verified by an alternate Optimisation approach and the maximum EV penetration is evaluated for a number of scenarios

    Comparison of intelligent charging algorithms for electric vehicles to reduce peak load and demand variability in a distribution grid

    A potential breakthrough of the electrification of the vehicle fleet will incur a steep rise in the load on the electrical power grid. To avoid huge grid investments, coordinated charging of those vehicles is a must. In this paper, we assess algorithms to schedule charging of plug-in (hybrid) electric vehicles as to minimize the additional peak load they might cause. We first introduce two approaches, one based on a classical optimization approach using quadratic programming, and a second one, market based coordination, which is a multi-agent system that uses bidding on a virtual market to reach an equilibrium, price that matches demand and supply. We benchmark these two methods against each other, as well as to a baseline scenario of uncontrolled charging. Our simulation results covering a residential area with 63 households show that controlled charging reduces peak load, load variability, and deviations from the nominal grid voltage

    Electric vehicle as a service (EVaaS):applications, challenges and enablers

    Under the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept, electric vehicles (EVs) can be deployed as loads to absorb excess production or as distributed energy resources to supply part of their stored energy back to the grid. This paper overviews the technologies, technical components and system requirements needed for EV deployment. Electric vehicle as a service (EVaaS) exploits V2G technology to develop a system where suitable EVs within the distribution network are chosen individually or in aggregate to exchange energy with the grid, individual customers or both. The EVaaS framework is introduced, and interactions among EVaaS subsystems such as EV batteries, charging stations, loads and advanced metering infrastructure are studied. The communication infrastructure and processing facilities that enable data and information exchange between EVs and the grid are reviewed. Different strategies for EV charging/discharging and their impact on the distribution grid are reviewed. Several market designs that incentivize energy trading in V2G environments are discussed. The benefits of V2G are studied from the perspectives of ancillary services, supporting of renewables and the environment. The challenges to V2G are studied with respect to battery degradation, energy conversion losses and effects on distribution system

    Matching mechanisms for two-sided shared mobility systems

    Shared mobility systems have gained significant attention in the last few decades due, in large part, to the rise of the service-based sharing economy. In this thesis, we study the matching mechanism design of two-sided shared mobility systems which include two distinct groups of users. Typical examples of such systems include ride-hailing platforms like Uber, ride-pooling platforms like Lyft Line, and community ride-sharing platforms like Zimride. These two-sided shared mobility systems can be modeled as two-sided markets, which need to be designed to efficiently allocate resources from the supply side of the market to the demand side of the market. Given its two-sided nature, the resource allocation problem in a two-sided market is essentially a matching problem. The matching problems in two-sided markets present themselves in decentralized and dynamic environments. In a decentralized environment, participants from both sides possess asymmetric information and strategic behaviors. They may behave strategically to advance their own benefits rather than the system-level performance. Participants may also have their private matching preferences, which they may be reluctant to share due to privacy and ethical concerns. In addition, the dynamic nature of the shared mobility systems brings in contingencies to the matching problems in the forms of, for example, the uncertainty of customer demand and resource availability. In this thesis, we propose matching mechanisms for shared mobility systems. Particularly, we address the challenges derived from the decentralized and dynamic environment of the two-sided shared mobility systems. The thesis is a compilation of four published or submitted journal papers. In these papers, we propose four matching mechanisms tackling various aspects of the matching mechanism design. We first present a price-based iterative double auction for dealing with asymmetric information between the two sides of the market and the strategic behaviors of self-interested agents. For settings where prices are predetermined by the market or cannot be changed frequently due to regulatory reasons, we propose a voting-based matching mechanism design. The mechanism is a distributed implementation of the simulated annealing meta-heuristic, which does not rely on a pricing scheme and preserves user privacy. In addition to decentralized matching mechanisms, we also propose dynamic matching mechanisms. Specifically, we propose a dispatch framework that integrates batched matching with data-driven proactive guidance for a Uber-like ride-hailing system to deal with the uncertainty of riders’ demand. By considering both drivers’ ride acceptance uncertainty and strategic behaviors, we finally propose a pricing mechanism that computes personalized payments for drivers to improve drivers' average acceptance rate in a ride-hailing system

    Electric Vehicle Charging Station Placement: Formulation, Complexity, and Solutions

    To enhance environmental sustainability, many countries will electrify their transportation systems in their future smart city plans. So the number of electric vehicles (EVs) running in a city will grow significantly. There are many ways to re-charge EVs' batteries and charging stations will be considered as the main source of energy. The locations of charging stations are critical; they should not only be pervasive enough such that an EV anywhere can easily access a charging station within its driving range, but also widely spread so that EVs can cruise around the whole city upon being re-charged. Based on these new perspectives, we formulate the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Placement Problem (EVCSPP) in this paper. We prove that the problem is non-deterministic polynomial-time hard. We also propose four solution methods to tackle EVCSPP and evaluate their performance on various artificial and practical cases. As verified by the simulation results, the methods have their own characteristics and they are suitable for different situations depending on the requirements for solution quality, algorithmic efficiency, problem size, nature of the algorithm, and existence of system prerequisite.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, revise

    Catching Cheats: Detecting Strategic Manipulation in Distributed Optimisation of Electric Vehicle Aggregators

    Given the rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide, and the ambitious targets set for the near future, the management of large EV fleets must be seen as a priority. Specifically, we study a scenario where EV charging is managed through self-interested EV aggregators who compete in the day-ahead market in order to purchase the electricity needed to meet their clients' requirements. With the aim of reducing electricity costs and lowering the impact on electricity markets, a centralised bidding coordination framework has been proposed in the literature employing a coordinator. In order to improve privacy and limit the need for the coordinator, we propose a reformulation of the coordination framework as a decentralised algorithm, employing the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). However, given the self-interested nature of the aggregators, they can deviate from the algorithm in order to reduce their energy costs. Hence, we study the strategic manipulation of the ADMM algorithm and, in doing so, describe and analyse different possible attack vectors and propose a mathematical framework to quantify and detect manipulation. Importantly, this detection framework is not limited the considered EV scenario and can be applied to general ADMM algorithms. Finally, we test the proposed decentralised coordination and manipulation detection algorithms in realistic scenarios using real market and driver data from Spain. Our empirical results show that the decentralised algorithm's convergence to the optimal solution can be effectively disrupted by manipulative attacks achieving convergence to a different non-optimal solution which benefits the attacker. With respect to the detection algorithm, results indicate that it achieves very high accuracies and significantly outperforms a naive benchmark
