    Morphological shape generation through user-controlled group metamorphosis

    Morphological shape design is interpreted in this paper as a search for new shapes from a particular application domain represented by a set of selected shape instances. This paper proposes a new foundation for morphological shape design and generation. In contrast to existing generative procedures, an approach based on a user-controlled metamorphosis between functionally based shape models is presented. A formulation of the pairwise metamorphosis is proposed with a variety of functions described for the stages of deformation, morphing and offsetting. This formulation is then extended to the metamorphosis between groups of shapes with user-defined, dynamically correlated and weighted feature elements. A practical system was implemented in the form of plugin to Maya and tested by an industrial designer on a group of representative shapes from a particular domain. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd

    Morphing of Building Footprints Using a Turning Angle Function

    We study the problem of morphing two polygons of building footprints at two different scales. This problem frequently occurs during the continuous zooming of interactive maps. The ground plan of a building footprint on a map has orthogonal characteristics, but traditional morphing methods cannot preserve these geographic characteristics at intermediate scales. We attempt to address this issue by presenting a turning angle function-based morphing model (TAFBM) that can generate polygons at an intermediate scale with an identical turning angle for each side. Thus, the orthogonal characteristics can be preserved during the entire interpolation. A case study demonstrates that the model yields good results when applied to data from a building map at various scales.     Space-Time Transfinite Interpolation of Volumetric Material Properties

    The paper presents a novel technique based on extension of a general mathematical method of transfinite interpolation to solve an actual problem in the context of a heterogeneous volume modelling area. It deals with time-dependent changes to the volumetric material properties (material density, colour and others) as a transformation of the volumetric material distributions in space-time accompanying geometric shape transformations such as metamorphosis. The main idea is to represent the geometry of both objects by scalar fields with distance properties, to establish in a higher-dimensional space a time gap during which the geometric transformation takes place, and to use these scalar fields to apply the new space-time transfinite interpolation to volumetric material attributes within this time gap. The proposed solution is analytical in its nature, does not require heavy numerical computations and can be used in real-time applications. Applications of this technique also include texturing and displacement mapping of time-variant surfaces, and parametric design of volumetric microstructures

    Shape Transformation of Multiple Objects Using Slices

    3D shape transformation is usually confined to transformation between a pair of objects. The objective of this paper is to look at shape transformation from a different perspective: instead of binding this concept between two objects, the technique is extended to the concept of incorporating the characteristics of a number of objects in one body at a time. Equal number of slices are generated from all objects. Slices may be parallel to each other or each slice may have different orientation. Traversal of a data along its longitudinal direction may generate slices which are differently oriented from each other. When multiple objects are transformed to one and is used as an influence shape, it also works as incorporating multiple influence shapes at a time during transformation between two objects. The paper shows the ease of implementation of this concept in sliced data and also discusses its extendibility

    Coupled atmosphere-wildland fire modeling with WRF-Fire

    We describe the physical model, numerical algorithms, and software structure of WRF-Fire. WRF-Fire consists of a fire-spread model, implemented by the level-set method, coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting model. In every time step, the fire model inputs the surface wind, which drives the fire, and outputs the heat flux from the fire into the atmosphere, which in turn influences the atmosphere. The level-set method allows submesh representation of the burning region and flexible implementation of various ignition modes.     2D and 3D surface image processing algorithms and their applications

    This doctoral dissertation work aims to develop algorithms for 2D image segmentation application of solar filament disappearance detection, 3D mesh simplification, and 3D image warping in pre-surgery simulation. Filament area detection in solar images is an image segmentation problem. A thresholding and region growing combined method is proposed and applied in this application. Based on the filament area detection results, filament disappearances are reported in real time. The solar images in 1999 are processed with this proposed system and three statistical results of filaments are presented. 3D images can be obtained by passive and active range sensing. An image registration process finds the transformation between each pair of range views. To model an object, a common reference frame in which all views can be transformed must be defined. After the registration, the range views should be integrated into a non-redundant model. Optimization is necessary to obtain a complete 3D model. One single surface representation can better fit to the data. It may be further simplified for rendering, storing and transmitting efficiently, or the representation can be converted to some other formats. This work proposes an efficient algorithm for solving the mesh simplification problem, approximating an arbitrary mesh by a simplified mesh. The algorithm uses Root Mean Square distance error metric to decide the facet curvature. Two vertices of one edge and the surrounding vertices decide the average plane. The simplification results are excellent and the computation speed is fast. The algorithm is compared with six other major simplification algorithms. Image morphing is used for all methods that gradually and continuously deform a source image into a target image, while producing the in-between models. Image warping is a continuous deformation of a: graphical object. A morphing process is usually composed of warping and interpolation. This work develops a direct-manipulation-of-free-form-deformation-based method and application for pre-surgical planning. The developed user interface provides a friendly interactive tool in the plastic surgery. Nose augmentation surgery is presented as an example. Displacement vector and lattices resulting in different resolution are used to obtain various deformation results. During the deformation, the volume change of the model is also considered based on a simplified skin-muscle model

    Three-dimensional metamorphosis: a survey

    International audienceA metamorphosis or a (3D) morphing is the process of continuously transforming one object into another. 2D and 3D morphing are popular in computer animation, industrial design, and growth simulation. Since there is no intrinsic solution to the morphing problem, user interaction can be a key component of a morphing software. Many morphing techniques have been proposed in recent years for 2D and 3D objects. We present a survey of the various 3D approaches, giving special attention to the user interface. We show how the approaches are intimately related to the object representations. We conclude by sketching some morphing strategies for the future

    Design and development of intelligent actuator control methodologies for morphing wing in wind tunnel

    In order to protect our environment by reducing the aviation carbon emissions and making the airline operations more fuel efficient, internationally, various collaborations were established between the academia and aeronautical industries around the world. Following the successful research and development efforts of the CRIAQ 7.1 project, the CRIAQ MDO 505 project was launched with a goal of maximizing the potential of electric aircraft. In the MDO 505, novel morphing wing actuators based on brushless DC motors are used. These actuators are placed chord-wise on two actuation lines. The demonstrator wing, included ribs, spars and a flexible skin, that is composed of glass fiber. The 2D and 3D models of the wing were developed in XFOIL and Fluent. These wing models can be programmed to morph the wing at various flight conditions composed of various Mach numbers, angles of attack and Reynolds number by allowing the computation of various optimized airfoils. The wing was tested in the wind tunnel at the IAR NRC Ottawa. In this thesis actuators are mounted with LVDT sensors to measure the linear displacement. The flexible skin is embedded with the pressure sensors to sense the location of the laminar-to-turbulent transition point. This thesis presents both linear and nonlinear modelling of the novel morphing actuator. Both classical and modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for the design of the actuator control system are presented. Actuator control design and validation in the wind tunnel is presented through three journal articles; The first article presents the controller design and wind tunnel testing of the novel morphing actuator for the wing tip of a real aircraft wing. The new morphing actuators are made up of BLDC motors coupled with a gear system, which converts the rotational motion into linear motion. Mathematical modelling is carried out in order to obtain a transfer function based on differential equations. In order to control the morphing wing it was concluded that a combined position, speed and current control of the actuator needs to be designed. This controller is designed using the Internal Model Control (IMC) method for the linear model of the actuator. Finally, the bench testing of the actuator is carried out and is further followed by its wind testing. The infra red thermography and kulite sensors data revealed that on average on all flight cases, the laminar to turbulent transition point was delayed close to the trailing edge of the wing. The second journal article presents the application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to the control design of the novel morphing actuator. Recently PSO algorithm has gained reputation in the family of evolutionary algorithms in solving non-convex problems. Although it does not guarantee convergence, however, by running it several times and by varying the initialization conditions the desired results were obtained. Following the successful computation of controller design, the PSO was validated using successful bench testing. Finally, the wind tunnel testing was performed based on the designed controller, and the Infra red testing and kulite sensor measurements results revealed the expected extension of laminar flows over the morphing wing. The third and final article presents the design of fuzzy logic controller. The BLDC motor is coupled with the gear which converts the rotary motion into linear motion, this phenomenon is used to push and pull the flexible morphing skin. The BLDC motor itself and its interaction with the gear and morphing skin, which is exposed to the aerodynamic loads, makes it a complex nonlinear system. It was therefore decided to design a fuzzy controller, which can control the actuator in an appropriate way. Three fuzzy controllers were designed each of these controllers was designed for current, speed and position control of the morphing actuator. Simulation results revealed that the designed controller can successfully control the actuator. Finally, the designed controller was tested in the wind tunnel; the results obtained through the wind tunnel test were compared, and further validated with the infra red and kulite sensors measurements which revealed improvement in the delay of transition point location over the morphed wing
