    Centralized vs distributed communication scheme on switched ethernet for embedded military applications

    Current military communication network is a generation old and is no longer effective in meeting the emerging requirements imposed by the future embedded military applications. Therefore, a new interconnection system is needed to overcome these limitations. Two new communication networks based upon Full Duplex Switched Ethernet are presented herein in this aim. The first one uses a distributed communication scheme where equipments can emit their data simultaneously, which clearly improves system’s throughput and flexibility. However, migrating all existing applications into a compliant form could be an expensive step. To avoid this process, the second proposal consists in keeping the current centralized communication scheme. Our objective is to assess and compare the real time guarantees that each proposal can offer. The paper includes the functional description of each proposed communication network and a military avionic application to highlight proposals ability to support the required time constrained communications

    In this paper, we revisit global as well as local schedulability analysis of synchronization protocols based on the stack resource policy (SRP) and overrun without payback for hierarchical scheduling frameworks based on fixed-priority preemptive scheduling (FPPS). We show that both the existing global and local schedulability analysis are pessimistic, present improved analysis, and illustrate the improvements by means of examples

    Transferring Real-Time Systems Research into Industrial Practice: Four Impact Case Studies

    This paper describes four impact case studies where real-time systems research has been successfully transferred into industrial practice. In three cases, the technology created was translated into a viable commercial product via a start-up company. This technology transfer led to the creation and sustaining of a large number of high technology jobs over a 20 year period. The final case study involved the direct transfer of research results into an engineering company. Taken together, all four case studies have led to significant advances in automotive electronics and avionics, providing substantial returns on investment for the companies using the technology

    CROSS-STACK PREDICTIVE CONTROL FRAMEWORK FOR MULTICORE REAL-TIME APPLICATIONS

    Many of the next generation applications in entertainment, human computer interaction, infrastructure, security and medical systems are computationally intensive, always-on, and have soft real time (SRT) requirements. While failure to meet deadlines is not catastrophic in SRT systems, missing deadlines can result in an unacceptable degradation in the quality of service (QoS). To ensure acceptable QoS under dynamically changing operating conditions such as changes in the workload, energy availability, and thermal constraints, systems are typically designed for worst case conditions. Unfortunately, such over-designing of systems increases costs and overall power consumption. In this dissertation we formulate the real-time task execution as a Multiple-Input, Single- Output (MISO) optimal control problem involving tracking a desired system utilization set point with control inputs derived from across the computing stack. We assume that an arbitrary number of SRT tasks may join and leave the system at arbitrary times. The tasks are scheduled on multiple cores by a dynamic priority multiprocessor scheduling algorithm. We use a model predictive controller (MPC) to realize optimal control. MPCs are easy to tune, can handle multiple control variables, and constraints on both the dependent and independent variables. We experimentally demonstrate the operation of our controller on a video encoder application and a computer vision application executing on a dual socket quadcore Xeon processor with a total of 8 processing cores. We establish that the use of DVFS and application quality as control variables enables operation at a lower power op- erating point while meeting real-time constraints as compared to non cross-stack control approaches. We also evaluate the role of scheduling algorithms in the control of homo- geneous and heterogeneous workloads. Additionally, we propose a novel adaptive control technique for time-varying workloads

    Distributed Control for Cyber-Physical Systems

    Networked Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are fundamentally constrained by the tight coupling and closed-loop control and actuation of physical processes. To address actuation in such closed-loop wireless control systems there is a strong need to re-think the communication architectures and protocols for maintaining stability and performance in the presence of disturbances to the network, environment and overall system objectives. We review the current state of network control efforts for CPS and present two complementary approaches for robust, optimal and composable control over networks. We first introduce a computer systems approach with Embedded Virtual Machines (EVM), a programming abstraction where controller tasks, with their control and timing properties, are maintained across physical node boundaries. Controller functionality is decoupled from the physical substrate and is capable of runtime migration to the most competent set of physical controllers to maintain stability in the presence of changes to nodes, links and network topology. We then view the problem from a control theoretic perspective to deliver fully distributed control over networks with Wireless Control Networks (WCN). As opposed to traditional networked control schemes where the nodes simply route information to and from a dedicated controller, our approach treats the network itself as the controller. In other words, the computation of the control law is done in a fully distributed way inside the network. In this approach, at each time-step, each node updates its internal state to be a linear combination of the states of the nodes in its neighborhood. This causes the entire network to behave as a linear dynamical system, with sparsity constraints imposed by the network topology. This eliminates the need for routing between “sensor → channel → dedicated controller/estimator → channel → actuator”, allows for simple transmission scheduling, is operational on resource constrained low-power nodes and allows for composition of additional control loops and plants. We demonstrate the potential of such distributed controllers to be robust to a high degree of link failures and to maintain stability even in cases of node failures

    Towards Scalable Design of Future Wireless Networks

    Wireless operators face an ever-growing challenge to meet the throughput and processing requirements of billions of devices that are getting connected. In current wireless networks, such as LTE and WiFi, these requirements are addressed by provisioning more resources: spectrum, transmitters, and baseband processors. However, this simple add-on approach to scale system performance is expensive and often results in resource underutilization. What are, then, the ways to efficiently scale the throughput and operational efficiency of these wireless networks? To answer this question, this thesis explores several potential designs: utilizing unlicensed spectrum to augment the bandwidth of a licensed network; coordinating transmitters to increase system throughput; and finally, centralizing wireless processing to reduce computing costs. First, we propose a solution that allows LTE, a licensed wireless standard, to co-exist with WiFi in the unlicensed spectrum. The proposed solution bridges the incompatibility between the fixed access of LTE, and the random access of WiFi, through channel reservation. It achieves a fair LTE-WiFi co-existence despite the transmission gaps and unequal frame durations. Second, we consider a system where different MIMO transmitters coordinate to transmit data of multiple users. We present an adaptive design of the channel feedback protocol that mitigates interference resulting from the imperfect channel information. Finally, we consider a Cloud-RAN architecture where a datacenter or a cloud resource processes wireless frames. We introduce a tree-based design for real-time transport of baseband samples and provide its end-to-end schedulability and capacity analysis. We also present a processing framework that combines real-time scheduling with fine-grained parallelism. The framework reduces processing times by migrating parallelizable tasks to idle compute resources, and thus, decreases the processing deadline-misses at no additional cost. We implement and evaluate the above solutions using software-radio platforms and off-the-shelf radios, and confirm their applicability in real-world settings.PhDElectrical Engineering: SystemsUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
