Chemical enhancement of footwear impressions in blood deposited on fabric — evaluating the use of alginate casting materials followed by chemical enhancement

Most footwear marks made in blood on a surface such as fabric tend to be enhanced in situ rather than physically recovered using a lifting technique prior to enhancement. This work reports on the use of an alginate material to recover the impressed footwear marks made in blood and deposited on a range of fabric types and colours. The lifted marks were then enhanced using acid black 1 and leuco crystal violet with excellent results. This presents a new method for the lifting and recovery of blood impressions in situ from crime scene followed by subsequent mark enhancement of the lifted impression

Bite marks on skin and clay: A comparative analysis

Bite marks are always unique because teeth are distinctive. Bite marks are often observed at the crime scene in sexual and in physical assault cases on the skin of the victims and sometimes on edible leftovers in burglary cases. This piece of evidence is often ignored, but if properly harvested and investigated, bite marks may prove useful in apprehending and successfully prosecuting the criminals. Due to the importance of bite marks, we conducted a progressive randomised experimental study conducted on volunteers. A total of 188 bite marks on clay were studied. Based on these findings, 93.34% of the volunteers could be identified from the bite marks on the clay. In addition, 201 impressions on skin were studied, and out of these cases, 41.01% of the same volunteers could be identified based on the bite mark impressions on the skin

The Analysis of Saw Marks in Bone

It has only been in the last two decades that the special circumstances of saw marks in bone have been addressed. The importance of these marks in forensic examinations has received little attention in the English literature, but this trend is changing. The examination of saw marks in bone is an area of research which may prove useful in a variety of scientific investigations. This thesis examines the variation present in the saw marks made by a group of hand saws and provides a methodology for the examination and analysis of these tool marks. The results of this investigation prove that it is indeed possible to differentiate the marks made by different saws and to classify the marks to a certain class of saws. Under rare circumstances it may be possible to positively identify a saw by the marks it leaves, but the matching of trace evidence from the scene of the sawing and evidence found on the saw seems to be a more reliable means of making a positive identification

The role of forensic dentistry for identification of a criminal sexual assault: a casework report

When, at the crime scene, objects are found with tooth marks, the intervention of Forensic Dentistry may represent the only way to obtain positive identification of the author’s bite mark. The forensic analysis of a bite mark consists of detection, recognition, description and comparison of bite marks on either individuals or inanimate objects. In this medico-legal casework, a sexual assault, the victim of the crime presented to the forensic examination had a mark on her left arm consistent with a bite mark, probably from the aggressor during the crime perpetration. The protocol followed in this medico-legal casework study is a scientific analysis of the facts which when presented in the court will be defendable under ruthless cross-examination. The pattern association of dental features in this sexual abuse case demonstrated a degree of concordance present between the tooth marks in the victim’s body and the suspect´s dentition.
