    Toward forest dynamics’ systematic knowledge: concept study of a multi-sensor visually tracked rover including a new insect radar for high-accuracy robotic monitoring

    Forest dynamics research is crucial in understanding the global carbon cycle and supporting various scales of forest decision-making, management, and conservation. Recent advancements in robotics and computing can be leveraged to address the need for systematic forest monitoring. We propose a common autonomous sensor box platform that enables seamless data integration from multiple sensors synchronized using a time stamp–based mechanism. The platform is designed to be open-source–oriented, ensuring interoperability and interchangeability of components. The sensor box, designed for stationary measurements, and the rover, designed for mobile mapping, are two applications of the proposed platform. The compact autonomous sensor box has a low-range radar that enables high-detail surveillance of nocturnal insects and small species. It can be extended to monitor other aspects, such as vegetation, tree phenology, and forest floor conditions. The multi-sensor visually tracked rover concept also enhances forest monitoring capabilities by enabling complex phenology monitoring. The rover has multiple sensors, including cameras, lidar, radar, and thermal sensors. These sensors operate autonomously and collect data using time stamps, ensuring synchronized data acquisition. The rover concept introduces a novel approach for achieving centimeter-accuracy data management in undercanopy forest conditions. It utilizes a prism attached to the rover, which an oriented robotic total station automatically tracks. This enables precise positioning of the rover and accurate data collection. A dense control network is deployed to ensure an accurate coordinate transfer from reference points to the rover. The demonstrated sample data highlight the effectiveness and high potential of the proposed solutions for systematic forest dynamics monitoring. These solutions offer a comprehensive approach to capturing and analyzing forest data, supporting research and management efforts in understanding and conserving forest ecosystems

    Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

    A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium

    Systemic Circular Economy Solutions for Fiber Reinforced Composites

    This open access book provides an overview of the work undertaken within the FiberEUse project, which developed solutions enhancing the profitability of composite recycling and reuse in value-added products, with a cross-sectorial approach. Glass and carbon fiber reinforced polymers, or composites, are increasingly used as structural materials in many manufacturing sectors like transport, constructions and energy due to their better lightweight and corrosion resistance compared to metals. However, composite recycling is still a challenge since no significant added value in the recycling and reprocessing of composites is demonstrated. FiberEUse developed innovative solutions and business models towards sustainable Circular Economy solutions for post-use composite-made products. Three strategies are presented, namely mechanical recycling of short fibers, thermal recycling of long fibers and modular car parts design for sustainable disassembly and remanufacturing. The validation of the FiberEUse approach within eight industrial demonstrators shows the potentials towards new Circular Economy value-chains for composite materials

    Development of Bridge Information Model (BrIM) for digital twinning and management using TLS technology

    In the current modern era of information and technology, the concept of Building Information Model (BIM), has made revolutionary changes in different aspects of engineering design, construction, and management of infrastructure assets, especially bridges. In the field of bridge engineering, Bridge Information Model (BrIM), as a specific form of BIM, includes digital twining of the physical asset associated with geometrical inspections and non-geometrical data, which has eliminated the use of traditional paper-based documentation and hand-written reports, enabling professionals and managers to operate more efficiently and effectively. However, concerns remain about the quality of the acquired inspection data and utilizing BrIM information for remedial decisions in a reliable Bridge Management System (BMS) which are still reliant on the knowledge and experience of the involved inspectors, or asset manager, and are susceptible to a certain degree of subjectivity. Therefore, this research study aims not only to introduce the valuable benefits of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) as a precise, rapid, and qualitative inspection method, but also to serve a novel sliced-based approach for bridge geometric Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model extraction using TLS-based point cloud, and to contribute to BrIM development. Moreover, this study presents a comprehensive methodology for incorporating generated BrIM in a redeveloped element-based condition assessment model while integrating a Decision Support System (DSS) to propose an innovative BMS. This methodology was further implemented in a designed software plugin and validated by a real case study on the Werrington Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in New South Wales, Australia. The finding of this research confirms the reliability of the TLS-derived 3D model in terms of quality of acquired data and accuracy of the proposed novel slice-based method, as well as BrIM implementation, and integration of the proposed BMS into the developed BrIM. Furthermore, the results of this study showed that the proposed integrated model addresses the subjective nature of decision-making by conducting a risk assessment and utilising structured decision-making tools for priority ranking of remedial actions. The findings demonstrated acceptable agreement in utilizing the proposed BMS for priority ranking of structural elements that require more attention, as well as efficient optimisation of remedial actions to preserve bridge health and safety

    This thesis explores the role of 3rd party service providers in the transition from traditional manufacturing to smart factory. The research investigates the challenges and opportunities associated with a digital transformation by reviewing the concept of a smart factory and collecting data through literature reviews and interviews with companies from the manufacturing industry. The analysis reveals that successful digital transformation in the manufacturing industry involves not only the adoption of digital technologies but also organizational changes. Today's manufacturing industry faces challenges related to development, integration with existing infrastructure, resource allocation, strategic planning, and organization-wide commitment. It becomes evident that 3rd party service providers, such as Capgemini, can play a crucial role in supporting companies throughout their digital transformation journey and filling the resource gap, by providing valuable technology and organizational insights, and expertise. However, the research has identified that Capgemini's current service levels are between limited and moderate in terms of coverage at some key areas towards an end-to-end service towards a digital transformation. The thesis proposes a digital transformation best practices framework, developed based on the conducted research and analysis, which guides 3rd party service providers to identify areas that lead to a successful digital transformation from traditional manufacturing to a smart factory
