Strategies for the intelligent selection of components
It is becoming common to build applications as component-intensive systems - a mixture of fresh code and existing components. For application developers the selection of components to incorporate is key to overall system quality - so they want the `best\u27. For each selection task, the application developer will de ne requirements for the ideal component and use them to select the most suitable one. While many software selection processes exist there is a lack of repeatable, usable, exible, automated processes with tool support. This investigation has focussed on nding and implementing strategies to enhance the selection of software components. The study was built around four research elements, targeting characterisation, process, strategies and evaluation. A Post-positivist methodology was used with the Spiral Development Model structuring the investigation. Data for the study is generated using a range of qualitative and quantitative methods including a survey approach, a range of case studies and quasiexperiments to focus on the speci c tuning of tools and techniques. A framework for Model-Driven Engineering of resilient software-controlled systems
AbstractEmergent paradigms of Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things expect cyber-physical systems to reliably provide services overcoming disruptions in operative conditions and adapting to changes in architectural and functional requirements. In this paper, we describe a hardware/software framework supporting operation and maintenance of software-controlled systems enhancing resilience by promoting a Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) process to automatically derive structural configurations and failure models from reliability artifacts. Specifically, a reflective architecture developed around digital twins enables representation and control of system Configuration Items properly derived from SysML Block Definition Diagrams, providing support for variation. Besides, a plurality of distributed analytic agents for qualitative evaluation over executable failure models empowers the system with runtime self-assessment and dynamic adaptation capabilities. We describe the framework architecture outlining roles and responsibilities in a System of Systems perspective, providing salient design traits about digital twins and data analytic agents for failure propagation modeling and analysis. We discuss a prototype implementation following the MDE approach, highlighting self-recovery and self-adaptation properties on a real cyber-physical system for vehicle access control to Limited Traffic Zones
Strategy realisation process: a modelling enabling approach
Changing conditions within an organisation’s environment necessitate enactment of
the strategy realisation process to produce relevant coping strategic intents to
successfully reconfigure current, or potential, process networks to better exploit
potential opportunities or minimise impacts of a potential threats.
Literature regarding strategy realisation has not produced a coherent approach to
describe and decompose the subprocesses of the strategy realisation, i.e., several
different approaches have been taken to enact some components however there is
no formal decomposition of such process. A revision of the strategy realisation
literature was conducted and a formal decomposition model for the strategy
realisation process was conceived.
Various modelling tools, methods and techniques were surveyed to enable the
underpinning of the proposed strategy realisation conceptualisation. Utilising a
combination of static, causal and simulation modelling methods and tools, a research
methodology was proposed to underpin aspects of the enterprise which would
facilitate the decision making process of the strategy realisation process.
Two case studies were identified in which the proposed methodology could be
implemented. In the first case study, two differing strategic intents were analysed
within the same organisation under opposing economic conditions. The second case
study observed the implementation of a different system configuration to achieve a
strategic intent. The strategy realisation process was studied using the described
conceptualisation and the enterprise was modelled. Key variables, set by senior
management were observed and quantitative analysis was undertaken and reported.
It was concluded that the use of modelling methods providing quantitative and
qualitative analysis facilitated the decision process within an organisation. A new
conceptualisation of the strategy realisation process and the integration of modelling
methods, tools and techniques were devised
Collected software engineering papers, volume 9
This document is a collection of selected technical papers produced by participants in the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) from November 1990 through October 1991. The purpose of the document is to make available, in one reference, some results of SEL research that originally appeared in a number of different forums. This is the ninth such volume of technical papers produced by the SEL. Although these papers cover several topics related to software engineering, they do not encompass the entire scope of SEL activities and interests. For the convenience of this presentation, the eight papers contained here are grouped into three major categories: (1) software models studies; (2) software measurement studies; and (3) Ada technology studies. The first category presents studies on reuse models, including a software reuse model applied to maintenance and a model for an organization to support software reuse. The second category includes experimental research methods and software measurement techniques. The third category presents object-oriented approaches using Ada and object-oriented features proposed for Ada. The SEL is actively working to understand and improve the software development process at GSFC
Generic semantics-based task-oriented dialogue system framework for human-machine interaction in industrial scenarios

En estecontexto, los sistemas de diálogo orientados a tareas permiten que los operarios deleguen las tareas mássencillas a los sistemas industriales mientras trabajan en otras más complejas. Además, la posibilidad deinteractuar de forma natural con estos sistemas reduce la carga cognitiva para usarlos y genera aceptaciónpor parte de los usuarios. Sin embargo, la mayorÃa de las soluciones existentes no permiten unacomunicación natural, y las técnicas actuales para obtener dichos sistemas necesitan grandes cantidadesde datos para ser entrenados, que son escasos en este tipo de escenarios. Esto provoca que los sistemas dediálogo orientados a tareas en el ámbito industrial sean muy especÃficos, lo que limita su capacidad de sermodificados o reutilizados en otros escenarios, tareas que están ligadas a un gran esfuerzo en términos detiempo y costes. Dados estos retos, en esta tesis se combinan TecnologÃas de la Web Semántica contécnicas de Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural para desarrollar KIDE4I, un sistema de diálogo orientadoa tareas semántico para entornos industriales que permite una comunicación natural entre humanos ysistemas industriales. Los módulos de KIDE4I están diseñados para ser genéricos para una sencillaadaptación a nuevos casos de uso. La ontologÃa modular TODO es el núcleo de KIDE4I, y se encarga demodelar el dominio y el proceso de diálogo, además de almacenar las trazas generadas. KIDE4I se haimplementado y adaptado para su uso en cuatro casos de uso industriales, demostrando que el proceso deadaptación para ello no es complejo y se beneficia del uso de recursos
