    Zuverlässige und Energieeffiziente gemischt-kritische Echtzeit On-Chip Systeme

    Multi- and many-core embedded systems are increasingly becoming the target for many applications that require high performance under varying conditions. A resulting challenge is the control, and reliable operation of such complex multiprocessing architectures under changes, e.g., high temperature and degradation. In mixed-criticality systems where many applications with varying criticalities are consolidated on the same execution platform, fundamental isolation requirements to guarantee non-interference of critical functions are crucially important. While Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are the prevalent solution to provide scalable and efficient interconnects for the multiprocessing architectures, their associated energy consumption has immensely increased. Specifically, hard real-time NoCs must manifest limited energy consumption as thermal runaway in such a core shared resource jeopardizes the whole system guarantees. Thus, dynamic energy management of NoCs, as opposed to the related work static solutions, is highly necessary to save energy and decrease temperature, while preserving essential temporal requirements. In this thesis, we introduce a centralized management to provide energy-aware NoCs for hard real-time systems. The design relies on an energy control network, developed on top of an existing switch arbitration network to allow isolation between energy optimization and data transmission. The energy control layer includes local units called Power-Aware NoC controllers that dynamically optimize NoC energy depending on the global state and applications’ temporal requirements. Furthermore, to adapt to abnormal situations that might occur in the system due to degradation, we extend the concept of NoC energy control to include the entire system scope. That is, online resource management employing hierarchical control layers to treat system degradation (imminent core failures) is supported. The mechanism applies system reconfiguration that involves workload migration. For mixed-criticality systems, it allows flexible boundaries between safety-critical and non-critical subsystems to safely apply the reconfiguration, preserving fundamental safety requirements and temporal predictability. Simulation and formal analysis-based experiments on various realistic usecases and benchmarks are conducted showing significant improvements in NoC energy-savings and in treatment of system degradation for mixed-criticality systems improving dependability over the status quo.Eingebettete Many- und Multi-core-Systeme werden zunehmend das Ziel für Anwendungen, die hohe Anfordungen unter unterschiedlichen Bedinungen haben. Für solche hochkomplexed Multi-Prozessor-Systeme ist es eine grosse Herausforderung zuverlässigen Betrieb sicherzustellen, insbesondere wenn sich die Umgebungseinflüsse verändern. In Systeme mit gemischter Kritikalität, in denen viele Anwendungen mit unterschiedlicher Kritikalität auf derselben Ausführungsplattform bedient werden müssen, sind grundlegende Isolationsanforderungen zur Gewährleistung der Nichteinmischung kritischer Funktionen von entscheidender Bedeutung. Während On-Chip Netzwerke (NoCs) häufig als skalierbare Verbindung für die Multiprozessor-Architekturen eingesetzt werden, ist der damit verbundene Energieverbrauch immens gestiegen. Daher sind dynamische Plattformverwaltungen, im Gegensatz zu den statischen, zwingend notwendig, um ein System an die oben genannten Veränderungen anzupassen und gleichzeitig Timing zu gewährleisten. In dieser Arbeit entwickeln wir energieeffiziente NoCs für harte Echtzeitsysteme. Das Design basiert auf einem Energiekontrollnetzwerk, das auf einem bestehenden Switch-Arbitration-Netzwerk entwickelt wurde, um eine Isolierung zwischen Energieoptimierung und Datenübertragung zu ermöglichen. Die Energiesteuerungsschicht umfasst lokale Einheiten, die als Power-Aware NoC-Controllers bezeichnet werden und die die NoC-Energie in Abhängigkeit vom globalen Zustand und den zeitlichen Anforderungen der Anwendungen optimieren. Darüber hinaus wird das Konzept der NoC-Energiekontrolle zur Anpassung an Anomalien, die aufgrund von Abnutzung auftreten können, auf den gesamten Systemumfang ausgedehnt. Online- Ressourcenverwaltungen, die hierarchische Kontrollschichten zur Behandlung Abnutzung (drohender Kernausfälle) einsetzen, werden bereitgestellt. Bei Systemen mit gemischter Kritikalität erlaubt es flexible Grenzen zwischen sicherheitskritischen und unkritischen Subsystemen, um die Rekonfiguration sicher anzuwenden, wobei grundlegende Sicherheitsanforderungen erhalten bleiben und Timing Vorhersehbarkeit. Experimente werden auf der Basis von Simulationen und formalen Analysen zu verschiedenen realistischen Anwendungsfallen und Benchmarks durchgeführt, die signifikanten Verbesserungen bei On-Chip Netzwerke-Energieeinsparungen und bei der Behandlung von Abnutzung für Systeme mit gemischter Kritikalität zur Verbesserung die Systemstabilität gegenüber dem bisherigen Status quo zeigen

    CAN to FlexRay Migration Framework

    Abstract—As FlexRay is implemented in production vehicles (e.g. BMW X5 and 7 series) there is a growing interest within the automotive industry in optimising its utilisation. FlexRay is expected to become the standard network for backbone communications, replacing CAN in this area. However the complexity and cost associated with migrating from existing CAN based systems and designs to FlexRay can prove to be a barrier in its widespread adoption. One of the biggest problems in optimising a FlexRay cycle is formalising the static segment and dynamic segment parameters. This paper describes a migration framework for the complete migration from an existing CAN based application to FlexRay based network. This migration framework defines the static (ST) segment size by using basic CAN parameters and performing task graph analysis. The resulting payload is defined before a final ST frame size is obtained. The dynamic (DYN) segment size is verified by determining the worst case response time of tasks operating in this segment. A sample adaptive cruise control (ACC) application is implemented to verify the framework

    Analysis as first-class citizens – an application to Architecture Description Languages

    Architecture Description Languages (ADLs) support modeling and analysis of systems through models transformation and exploration. Various contributions made proposals to bring verification capabilities to designers through model-based frame- works and illustrated benefits to the overall system quality. Model-level analyses are usually performed as an exogenous, unidirectional and semantically weak transformation towards a third-party model. We claim such process can be incomplete and/or inefficient because gathered results lead to evolution of the primary model. This is particularly problematic for the design of Distributed Real-Time Embedded (DRE) systems that has to tackle many concerns like time, security or safety. In this paper, we argue why analysis should no longer be considered as a side step in the design process but, rather, should be embedded as a first-class citizen in the model itself. We review several standardized architecture description languages, which consider analysis as a goal. As an element of solution, we introduce current work on the definition of a language dedicated to the analysis of models within the scope of one particular ADL, namely the Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL)

    NoC-based Architectures for Real-Time Applications : Performance Analysis and Design Space Exploration

    Monoprocessor architectures have reached their limits in regard to the computing power they offer vs the needs of modern systems. Although multicore architectures partially mitigate this limitation and are commonly used nowadays, they usually rely on intrinsically non-scalable buses to interconnect the cores. The manycore paradigm was proposed to tackle the scalability issue of bus-based multicore processors. It can scale up to hundreds of processing elements (PEs) on a single chip, by organizing them into computing tiles (holding one or several PEs). Intercore communication is usually done using a Network-on-Chip (NoC) that consists of interconnected onchip routers allowing communication between tiles. However, manycore architectures raise numerous challenges, particularly for real-time applications. First, NoC-based communication tends to generate complex blocking patterns when congestion occurs, which complicates the analysis, since computing accurate worst-case delays becomes difficult. Second, running many applications on large Systems-on-Chip such as manycore architectures makes system design particularly crucial and complex. On one hand, it complicates Design Space Exploration, as it multiplies the implementation alternatives that will guarantee the desired functionalities. On the other hand, once a hardware architecture is chosen, mapping the tasks of all applications on the platform is a hard problem, and finding an optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time is not always possible. Therefore, our first contributions address the need for computing tight worst-case delay bounds in wormhole NoCs. We first propose a buffer-aware worst-case timing analysis (BATA) to derive upper bounds on the worst-case end-to-end delays of constant-bit rate data flows transmitted over a NoC on a manycore architecture. We then extend BATA to cover a wider range of traffic types, including bursty traffic flows, and heterogeneous architectures. The introduced method is called G-BATA for Graph-based BATA. In addition to covering a wider range of assumptions, G-BATA improves the computation time; thus increases the scalability of the method. In a second part, we develop a method addressing design and mapping for applications with real-time constraints on manycore platforms. It combines model-based engineering tools (TTool) and simulation with our analytical verification technique (G-BATA) and tools (WoPANets) to provide an efficient design space exploration framework. Finally, we validate our contributions on (a) a serie of experiments on a physical platform and (b) two case studies taken from the real world: an autonomous vehicle control application, and a 5G signal decoder applicatio

    The application of black box models to combustion processes in the internal combustion engine

    The internal combustion engine has been under considerable pressure during the last few years. The publics growing sensitivity for emissions and resource wastage have led to increasingly stringent legislation. Engine manufacturers need to invest significant monetary funds and engineering resources in order to meet the designated regulations. In recent years, reductions in emissions and fuel consumption could be achieved with advanced engine technologies such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), variable geometry turbines (VGT), variable valve trains (VVT), variable compression ratios (VCR) or extended aftertreatment systems such as diesel particulate filters (DPF) or NOx traps or selective catalytic reduction (SCR) implementations. These approaches are characterised by a highly non-linear behaviour with an increasing demand for close-loop control. In consequence, successful controller design becomes an important part of meeting legislation requirements and acceptable standards. At the same time, the close-loop control requires additional monitoring information and, especially in the field of combustion control, this is a challenging task. Existing sensors in heavy-duty diesel applications for incylinder pressure detection enable the feedback of combustion conditions. However, high maintenance costs and reliability issues currently cancel this method out for mass-production vehicles. Methods of in-cylinder condition reconstruction for real-time applications have been presented over the last few decades. The methodical restrictions of these approaches are proving problematic. Hence, this work presents a method utilising artificial neural networks for the prediction of combustion-related engine parameters. The application of networks for the prediction of parameters such as emission formations of NOx and Particulate Matters will be shown initially. This thesis shows the importance of correct training and validation data choice together with a comprehensive network input set. In addition, an application of an efficient and accurate plant model as a support tool for an engine fuel-path controller is presented together with an efficient test data generation method. From these findings, an artificial neural network structure is developed for the prediction of in-cylinder combustion conditions. In-cylinder pressure and temperature provide valuable information about the combustion efficiency and quality. This work presents a structure that can predict these parameters from other more simple measurable variables within the engine auxiliaries. The structure is tested on data generated from a GT-Power simulation model and with a Caterpillar C6.6 heavy-duty diesel engine

    Towards a Common Software/Hardware Methodology for Future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

    The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches.
