    A distributed networked approach for fault detection of large-scale systems

    Networked systems present some key new challenges in the development of fault diagnosis architectures. This paper proposes a novel distributed networked fault detection methodology for large-scale interconnected systems. The proposed formulation incorporates a synchronization methodology with a filtering approach in order to reduce the effect of measurement noise and time delays on the fault detection performance. The proposed approach allows the monitoring of multi-rate systems, where asynchronous and delayed measurements are available. This is achieved through the development of a virtual sensor scheme with a model-based re-synchronization algorithm and a delay compensation strategy for distributed fault diagnostic units. The monitoring architecture exploits an adaptive approximator with learning capabilities for handling uncertainties in the interconnection dynamics. A consensus-based estimator with timevarying weights is introduced, for improving fault detectability in the case of variables shared among more than one subsystem. Furthermore, time-varying threshold functions are designed to prevent false-positive alarms. Analytical fault detectability sufficient conditions are derived and extensive simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the distributed fault detection technique

    In recent years, the study of networked control systems (NCSs) has gradually become an active research area due to the advantages of using networked media in many aspects such as the ease of maintenance and installation, the large flexibility and the low cost. It is well known that the devices in networks are mutually connected via communication cables that are of limited capacity. Therefore, some network-induced phenomena have inevitably emerged in the areas of signal processing and control engineering. These phenomena include, but are not limited to, network-induced communication delays, missing data, signal quantization, saturations, and channel fading. It is of great importance to understand how these phenomena influence the closed-loop stability and performance properties

    Fuzzy-logic-based control, filtering, and fault detection for networked systems: A Survey

    This paper is concerned with the overview of the recent progress in fuzzy-logic-based filtering, control, and fault detection problems. First, the network technologies are introduced, the networked control systems are categorized from the aspects of fieldbuses and industrial Ethernets, the necessity of utilizing the fuzzy logic is justified, and the network-induced phenomena are discussed. Then, the fuzzy logic control strategies are reviewed in great detail. Special attention is given to the thorough examination on the latest results for fuzzy PID control, fuzzy adaptive control, and fuzzy tracking control problems. Furthermore, recent advances on the fuzzy-logic-based filtering and fault detection problems are reviewed.     A Novel Predictor Based Framework to Improve Mobility of High Speed Teleoperated Unmanned Ground Vehicles

    Teleoperated Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) have been widely used in applications when driver safety, mission eciency or mission cost is a major concern. One major challenge with teleoperating a UGV is that communication delays can significantly affect the mobility performance of the vehicle and make teleoperated driving tasks very challenging especially at high speeds. In this dissertation, a predictor based framework with predictors in a new form and a blended architecture are developed to compensate effects of delays through signal prediction, thereby improving vehicle mobility performance. The novelty of the framework is that minimal information about the governing equations of the system is required to compensate delays and, thus, the prediction is robust to modeling errors. This dissertation first investigates a model-free solution and develops a predictor that does not require information about the vehicle dynamics or human operators' motion for prediction. Compared to the existing model-free methods, neither assumptions about the particular way the vehicle moves, nor knowledge about the noise characteristics that drive the existing predictive filters are needed. Its stability and performance are studied and a predictor design procedure is presented. Secondly, a blended architecture is developed to blend the outputs of the model-free predictor with those of a steering feedforward loop that relies on minimal information about vehicle lateral response. Better prediction accuracy is observed based on open-loop virtual testing with the blended architecture compared to using either the model-free predictors or the model-based feedforward loop alone. The mobility performance of teleoperated vehicles with delays and the predictor based framework are evaluated in this dissertation with human-in-the-loop experiments using both simulated and physical vehicles in teleoperation mode.     Robust stabilization of a class of nonlinear systems controlled over communication networks

    The paper deals with the stabilization of nonlin-ear systems in which the loop is closed over a lossy non-acknowledged communication network. Given a Regional Input-to-State (ISS) stabilizing state-feedback control law, designedwithout accounting for the network-induced delays, we proposea non-acknowledged communication policy that allows to deploythe above controller over the network without any modification,while preserving the Regional ISS property. The time-varyingdelays and packet dropouts occurring on both the up-link andthe down-link are compensated through a model-based predictionscheme and a packet-management policy based on time-stamping.The consistency of the prediction, which is a major issue inthe context of nonlinear systems with an embedded networkedcontroller, is guaranteed through the exploitation of a novel move-blocking strategy for computing the command sequence to beforwarded to the actuators

    STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE OF NETWORKED CONTROL SYSTEMS

    Network control systems (NCSs), as one of the most active research areas, are arousing comprehensive concerns along with the rapid development of network. This dissertation mainly discusses the stability and performance of NCSs into the following two parts. In the first part, a new approach is proposed to reduce the data transmitted in networked control systems (NCSs) via model reduction method. Up to our best knowledge, we are the first to propose this new approach in the scientific and engineering society. The "unimportant" information of system states vector is truncated by balanced truncation method (BTM) before sending to the networked controller via network based on the balance property of the remote controlled plant controllability and observability. Then, the exponential stability condition of the truncated NCSs is derived via linear matrix inequality (LMI) forms. This method of data truncation can usually reduce the time delay and further improve the performance of the NCSs. In addition, all the above results are extended to the switched NCSs. The second part presents a new robust sliding mode control (SMC) method for general uncertain time-varying delay stochastic systems with structural uncertainties and the Brownian noise (Wiener process). The key features of the proposed method are to apply singular value decomposition (SVD) to all structural uncertainties, to introduce adjustable parameters for control design along with the SMC method, and new Lyapunov-type functional. Then, a less-conservative condition for robust stability and a new robust controller for the general uncertain stochastic systems are derived via linear matrix inequality (LMI) forms. The system states are able to reach the SMC switching surface as guaranteed in probability 1 by the proposed control rule. Furthermore, the novel Lyapunov-type functional for the uncertain stochastic systems is used to design a new robust control for the general case where the derivative of time-varying delay can be any bounded value (e.g., greater than one). It is theoretically proved that the conservatism of the proposed method is less than the previous methods. All theoretical proofs are presented in the dissertation. The simulations validate the correctness of the theoretical results and have better performance than the existing results
