Robust P2P Live Streaming

which will strongly influence in current and future Internet evolution. Aware of this, we
are developing a project named Trilogy leaded by the i2CAT Foundation, which has as
main pillar the study, development and evaluation of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Live
streaming architectures for the distribution of high-quality media contents. In this
context, this work concretely covers media coding aspects and proposes the use of
Multiple Description Coding (MDC) as a flexible solution for providing robust and
scalable live streaming over P2P networks. This work describes current state of the art
in media coding techniques and P2P streaming architectures, presents the
implemented prototype as well as its simulation and validation results
SVCEval-RA: an evaluation framework for adaptive scalable video streaming
[EN] Multimedia content adaption strategies are becoming increasingly important for effective video streaming over the actual heterogeneous networks. Thus, evaluation frameworks for adaptive video play an important role in the designing and deploying process of adaptive multimedia streaming systems. This paper describes a novel simulation framework for rate-adaptive video transmission using the Scalable Video Coding standard (H.264/SVC). Our approach uses feedback information about the available bandwidth to allow the video source to select the most suitable combination of SVC layers for the transmission of a video sequence. The proposed solution has been integrated into the network simulator NS-2 in order to support realistic network simulations. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed solution we perform a simulation study where a video sequence was transmitted over a three network scenarios. The experimental results show that the Adaptive SVC scheme implemented in our framework provides an efficient alternative that helps to avoid an increase in the network congestion in resource-constrained networks. A Stable Fountain Code Mechanism for Peer-to-Peer Content Distribution
Most peer-to-peer content distribution systems require the peers to privilege
the welfare of the overall system over greedily maximizing their own utility.
When downloading a file broken up into multiple pieces, peers are often asked
to pass on some possible download opportunities of common pieces in order to
favor rare pieces. This is to avoid the missing piece syndrome, which throttles
the download rate of the peer-to-peer system to that of downloading the file
straight from the server. In other situations, peers are asked to stay in the
system even though they have collected all the file's pieces and have an
incentive to leave right away.
We propose a mechanism which allows peers to act greedily and yet stabilizes
the peer-to-peer content sharing system. Our mechanism combines a fountain code
at the server to generate innovative new pieces, and a prioritization for the
server to deliver pieces only to new peers. While by itself, neither the
fountain code nor the prioritization of new peers alone stabilizes the system,
we demonstrate that their combination does, through both analytical and

Multiple description video coding for stereoscopic 3D
In this paper, we propose an MDC schemes for stereoscopic 3D video. In the literature, MDC has previously been applied in 2D video but not so much in 3D video. The proposed algorithm enhances the error resilience of the 3D video using the combination of even and odd frame based MDC while retaining good temporal prediction efficiency for video over error-prone networks. Improvements are made to the original even and odd frame MDC scheme by adding a controllable amount of side information to improve frame interpolation at the decoder. The side information is also sent according to the video sequence motion for further improvement. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated in error free and error prone environments especially for wireless channels. Simulation results show improved performance using the proposed MDC at high error rates compared to the single description coding (SDC) and the original even and odd frame MDC
Provider-Controlled Bandwidth Management for HTTP-based Video Delivery
Over the past few years, a revolution in video delivery technology has taken place as mobile viewers and over-the-top (OTT) distribution paradigms have significantly changed the landscape of video delivery services. For decades, high quality video was only available in the home via linear television or physical media. Though Web-based services brought video to desktop and laptop computers, the dominance of proprietary delivery protocols and codecs inhibited research efforts. The recent emergence of HTTP adaptive streaming protocols has prompted a re-evaluation of legacy video delivery paradigms and introduced new questions as to the scalability and manageability of OTT video delivery.
This dissertation addresses the question of how to enable for content and network service providers the ability to monitor and manage large numbers of HTTP adaptive streaming clients in an OTT environment. Our early work focused on demonstrating the viability of server-side pacing schemes to produce an HTTP-based streaming server. We also investigated the ability of client-side pacing schemes to work with both commodity HTTP servers and our HTTP streaming server. Continuing our client-side pacing research, we developed our own client-side data proxy architecture which was implemented on a variety of mobile devices and operating systems. We used the portable client architecture as a platform for investigating different rate adaptation schemes and algorithms. We then concentrated on evaluating the network impact of multiple adaptive bitrate clients competing for limited network resources, and developing schemes for enforcing fair access to network resources.
The main contribution of this dissertation is the definition of segment-level client and network techniques for enforcing class of service (CoS) differentiation between OTT HTTP adaptive streaming clients. We developed a segment-level network proxy architecture which works transparently with adaptive bitrate clients through the use of segment replacement. We also defined a segment-level rate adaptation algorithm which uses download aborts to enforce CoS differentiation across distributed independent clients. The segment-level abstraction more accurately models application-network interactions and highlights the difference between segment-level and packet-level time scales. Our segment-level CoS enforcement techniques provide a foundation for creating scalable managed OTT video delivery services
AngelCast: cloud-based peer-assisted live streaming using optimized multi-tree construction
Increasingly, commercial content providers (CPs) offer streaming solutions using peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures, which promises significant scalabil- ity by leveraging clients’ upstream capacity. A major limitation of P2P live streaming is that playout rates are constrained by clients’ upstream capac- ities – typically much lower than downstream capacities – which limit the quality of the delivered stream. To leverage P2P architectures without sacri- ficing quality, CPs must commit additional resources to complement clients’ resources. In this work, we propose a cloud-based service AngelCast that enables CPs to complement P2P streaming. By subscribing to AngelCast, a CP is able to deploy extra resources (angel), on-demand from the cloud, to maintain a desirable stream quality. Angels do not download the whole stream, nor are they in possession of it. Rather, angels only relay the minimal fraction of the stream necessary to achieve the desired quality. We provide a lower bound on the minimum angel capacity needed to maintain a desired client bit-rate, and develop a fluid model construction to achieve it. Realizing the limitations of the fluid model construction, we design a practical multi- tree construction that captures the spirit of the optimal construction, and avoids its limitations. Implementation of 4kUHD HEVC-content transmission
The Internet of things (IoT) has received a great deal of attention in recent years, and is still being approached with a wide range of views. At the same time, video data now accounts for over half of the internet traffic. With the current availability of beyond high definition, it is worth understanding the performance effects, especially for real-time applications. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) aims to provide reduction in bandwidth utilisation while maintaining perceived video quality in comparison with its predecessor codecs. Its adoption aims to provide for areas such as television broadcast, multimedia streaming/storage, and mobile communications with significant improvements. Although there have been attempts at HEVC streaming, the literature/implementations offered do not take into consideration changes in the HEVC specifications. Beyond this point, it seems little research exists on real-time HEVC coded content live streaming. Our contribution fills this current gap in enabling compliant and real-time networked HEVC visual applications. This is done implementing a technique for real-time HEVC encapsulation in MPEG-2 Transmission Stream (MPEG-2 TS) and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), thereby removing the need for multi-platform clients to receive and decode HEVC streams. It is taken further by evaluating the transmission of 4k UHDTV HEVC-coded content in a typical wireless environment using both computers and mobile devices, while considering well-known factors such as obstruction, interference and other unseen factors that affect the network performance and video quality. Our results suggest that 4kUHD can be streamed at 13.5 Mb/s, and can be delivered to multiple devices without loss in perceived quality
Content-Aware Multimedia Communications
The demands for fast, economic and reliable dissemination of multimedia
information are steadily growing within our society. While people and
economy increasingly rely on communication technologies, engineers still
struggle with their growing complexity.
Complexity in multimedia communication originates from several sources. The
most prominent is the unreliability of packet networks like the Internet.
Recent advances in scheduling and error control mechanisms for streaming
protocols have shown that the quality and robustness of multimedia delivery
can be improved significantly when protocols are aware of the content they
deliver. However, the proposed mechanisms require close cooperation between
transport systems and application layers which increases the overall system
complexity. Current approaches also require expensive metrics and focus on
special encoding formats only. A general and efficient model is missing so
far.
This thesis presents efficient and format-independent solutions to support
cross-layer coordination in system architectures. In particular, the first
contribution of this work is a generic dependency model that enables
transport layers to access content-specific properties of media streams,
such as dependencies between data units and their importance. The second
contribution is the design of a programming model for streaming
communication and its implementation as a middleware architecture. The
programming model hides the complexity of protocol stacks behind simple
programming abstractions, but exposes cross-layer control and monitoring
options to application programmers. For example, our interfaces allow
programmers to choose appropriate failure semantics at design time while
they can refine error protection and visibility of low-level errors at
run-time.
Based on some examples we show how our middleware simplifies the
integration of stream-based communication into large-scale application
architectures. An important result of this work is that despite cross-layer
cooperation, neither application nor transport protocol designers
experience an increase in complexity. Application programmers can even
reuse existing streaming protocols which effectively increases system

Kommunikationstechnologien abhängig machen, müssen die Ingenieure dieser
Technologien sowohl den Bedarf nach schneller Einführung neuer Produkte
befriedigen als auch die wachsende Komplexität der Systeme beherrschen.
Gerade die Übertragung multimedialer Inhalte wie Video und Audiodaten ist
nicht trivial. Einer der prominentesten Gründe dafür ist die
Unzuverlässigkeit heutiger Netzwerke, wie z.B.~dem Internet. Paketverluste
und schwankende Laufzeiten können die Darstellungsqualität massiv
beeinträchtigen. Wie jüngste Entwicklungen im Bereich der
Streaming-Protokolle zeigen, sind jedoch Qualität und Robustheit der
Übertragung effizient kontrollierbar, wenn Streamingprotokolle
Informationen über den Inhalt der transportierten Daten ausnutzen.
Existierende Ansätze, die den Inhalt von Multimediadatenströmen
beschreiben, sind allerdings meist auf einzelne Kompressionsverfahren
spezialisiert und verwenden berechnungsintensive Metriken. Das reduziert
ihren praktischen Nutzen deutlich. Außerdem erfordert der
Informationsaustausch eine enge Kooperation zwischen Applikationen und
Transportschichten. Da allerdings die Schnittstellen aktueller
Systemarchitekturen nicht darauf vorbereitet sind, müssen entweder die
Schnittstellen erweitert oder alternative Architekturkonzepte geschaffen
werden. Die Gefahr beider Varianten ist jedoch, dass sich die Komplexität
eines Systems dadurch weiter erhöhen kann.
Das zentrale Ziel dieser Dissertation ist es deshalb,
schichtenübergreifende Koordination bei gleichzeitiger Reduzierung der
Komplexität zu erreichen. Hier leistet die Arbeit zwei Beträge zum
aktuellen Stand der Forschung. Erstens definiert sie ein universelles
Modell zur Beschreibung von Inhaltsattributen, wie Wichtigkeiten und
Abhängigkeitsbeziehungen innerhalb eines Datenstroms. Transportschichten
können dieses Wissen zur effizienten Fehlerkontrolle verwenden. Zweitens
beschreibt die Arbeit das Noja Programmiermodell für multimediale
Middleware. Noja definiert Abstraktionen zur Übertragung und Kontrolle
multimedialer Ströme, die die Koordination von Streamingprotokollen mit
Applikationen ermöglichen. Zum Beispiel können Programmierer geeignete
Fehlersemantiken und Kommunikationstopologien auswählen und den konkreten
Fehlerschutz dann zur Laufzeit verfeinern und kontrolliere
