    On demand multicast routing in wireless sensor networks

    The wireless networking environment presents imposing challenges to the study of broadcasting and multicasting problems. Developing an algorithm to optimize communication amongst a group of spatially distributed sensor nodes in a WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) has been met with a number challenges due to the characterization of the sensor node device. These challenges include, but are not limited to: energy, memory, and throughput constraints. The traditional approach to overcome these challenges have emphasised the development of low power electronics, efficient modulation, coding, antenna design etc., it has been recognised that networking techniques can also have a strong impact on the energy efficiency of such systems. A variety of networking based approaches to energy efficiency are possible. One of the well-known approaches is to apply clustering techniques to effectively establish an ordered connection of sensor nodes whilst improving the overall network lifetime. This paper proposes an improved clustering based multicast approach that allows any cluster head to be a multicast source with an unlimited number of subscribers, to optimize group communication in WSNs whilst ensuring sensor nodes do not deprecate rapidly in energy levels. We review several clustering approaches and examine multicast versus broadcast communication in WSNs

    Wireless Communications in the Era of Big Data

    The rapidly growing wave of wireless data service is pushing against the boundary of our communication network's processing power. The pervasive and exponentially increasing data traffic present imminent challenges to all the aspects of the wireless system design, such as spectrum efficiency, computing capabilities and fronthaul/backhaul link capacity. In this article, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in the design of scalable wireless systems to embrace such a "bigdata" era. On one hand, we review the state-of-the-art networking architectures and signal processing techniques adaptable for managing the bigdata traffic in wireless networks. On the other hand, instead of viewing mobile bigdata as a unwanted burden, we introduce methods to capitalize from the vast data traffic, for building a bigdata-aware wireless network with better wireless service quality and new mobile applications. First, it gives more insight into traditional Content Distribution Networks (CDN), their requirements and open issues. Second, it discusses Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems as a cheap and scalable alternative for CDN and extracts their design challenges. Finally, it evaluates the existing P2P systems dedicated for content distribution according to the identied requirements and challenges

    A Security Supervision System for Hybrid Networks

    The traditional way of protecting networks and applications with e.g., firewalls and encryption, is no longer sufficient to protect effectively emerging hybrid wired-cum-wireless networks including ad hoc networks. Intrusion detection mechanisms should be coupled with preventive measures so as to identify unauthorised abuses. To this end, we propose a novel Hybrid Distributed Security Operation Center (HDSOC) which collects logs that are generated by any application/service, layer of the protocol stack or resource (e.g., router), providing a global view of the supervised system based on which complex and distributed intrusions can be detected. Our HDSOC further (i) distributes its capabilities and (ii) provides extensive coordination capabilities for guarantying that both the networks and the HDSOC components do not constitute isolated entities largely unaware of each others

    The state of peer-to-peer network simulators

    Networking research often relies on simulation in order to test and evaluate new ideas. An important requirement of this process is that results must be reproducible so that other researchers can replicate, validate and extend existing work. We look at the landscape of simulators for research in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks by conducting a survey of a combined total of over 280 papers from before and after 2007 (the year of the last survey in this area), and comment on the large quantity of research using bespoke, closed-source simulators. We propose a set of criteria that P2P simulators should meet, and poll the P2P research community for their agreement. We aim to drive the community towards performing their experiments on simulators that allow for others to validate their results
