    A Survey on Compiler Autotuning using Machine Learning

    Since the mid-1990s, researchers have been trying to use machine-learning based approaches to solve a number of different compiler optimization problems. These techniques primarily enhance the quality of the obtained results and, more importantly, make it feasible to tackle two main compiler optimization problems: optimization selection (choosing which optimizations to apply) and phase-ordering (choosing the order of applying optimizations). The compiler optimization space continues to grow due to the advancement of applications, increasing number of compiler optimizations, and new target architectures. Generic optimization passes in compilers cannot fully leverage newly introduced optimizations and, therefore, cannot keep up with the pace of increasing options. This survey summarizes and classifies the recent advances in using machine learning for the compiler optimization field, particularly on the two major problems of (1) selecting the best optimizations and (2) the phase-ordering of optimizations.     Hardware compilation of deep neural networks: an overview

    Deploying a deep neural network model on a reconfigurable platform, such as an FPGA, is challenging due to the enormous design spaces of both network models and hardware design. A neural network model has various layer types, connection patterns and data representations, and the corresponding implementation can be customised with different architectural and modular parameters. Rather than manually exploring this design space, it is more effective to automate optimisation throughout an end-to-end compilation process. This paper provides an overview of recent literature proposing novel approaches to achieve this aim. We organise materials to mirror a typical compilation flow: front end, platform-independent optimisation and back end. Design templates for neural network accelerators are studied with a specific focus on their derivation methodologies. We also review previous work on network compilation and optimisation for other hardware platforms to gain inspiration regarding FPGA implementation. Finally, we propose some future directions for related research

    TensorIR: An Abstraction for Automatic Tensorized Program Optimization

    Deploying deep learning models on various devices has become an important topic. The wave of hardware specialization brings a diverse set of acceleration primitives for multi-dimensional tensor computations. These new acceleration primitives, along with the emerging machine learning models, bring tremendous engineering challenges. In this paper, we present TensorIR, a compiler abstraction for optimizing programs with these tensor computation primitives. TensorIR generalizes the loop nest representation used in existing machine learning compilers to bring tensor computation as the first-class citizen. Finally, we build an end-to-end framework on top of our abstraction to automatically optimize deep learning models for given tensor computation primitives. Experimental results show that TensorIR compilation automatically uses the tensor computation primitives for given hardware backends and delivers performance that is competitive to state-of-art hand-optimized systems across platforms.Comment: Accepted to ASPLOS 202

    ACOTES project: Advanced compiler technologies for embedded streaming

    Streaming applications are built of data-driven, computational components, consuming and producing unbounded data streams. Streaming oriented systems have become dominant in a wide range of domains, including embedded applications and DSPs. However, programming efficiently for streaming architectures is a challenging task, having to carefully partition the computation and map it to processes in a way that best matches the underlying streaming architecture, taking into account the distributed resources (memory, processing, real-time requirements) and communication overheads (processing and delay). These challenges have led to a number of suggested solutions, whose goal is to improve the programmer’s productivity in developing applications that process massive streams of data on programmable, parallel embedded architectures. StreamIt is one such example. Another more recent approach is that developed by the ACOTES project (Advanced Compiler Technologies for Embedded Streaming). The ACOTES approach for streaming applications consists of compiler-assisted mapping of streaming tasks to highly parallel systems in order to maximize cost-effectiveness, both in terms of energy and in terms of design effort. The analysis and transformation techniques automate large parts of the partitioning and mapping process, based on the properties of the application domain, on the quantitative information about the target systems, and on programmer directives.     An Integrated Program Representation for Loop Optimizations

    Inspite of all the advances, automatic parallelization has not entered the general purpose compiling environment for several reasons. There have been two distinct schools of thought in parallelization domain namely, affine and non-affine which have remained incompatible with each other over the years. Thus, a good practical compiler will have to be able to analyze and parallelize any type of code - affine or non-affine or a mix of both. To be able to achieve the best performance, compilers will have to derive the order of transformations best suitable for a given program on a given system. This problem, known as "Phase Ordering", is a very crucial impedance for practical compilers, more so for parallelizing compilers. The ideal compiler should be able to consider various orders of transformations and reason about the performance benefits of the same. In order to achieve such a compiler, in this paper, we propose a unified program representation which has the following characteristics: a) Modular in nature. b) Ability to represent both ane and non-ane transformations. c) Ability to use detailed static run-time estimators directly on the representation

    Polyhedral+Dataflow Graphs

    This research presents an intermediate compiler representation that is designed for optimization, and emphasizes the temporary storage requirements and execution schedule of a given computation to guide optimization decisions. The representation is expressed as a dataflow graph that describes computational statements and data mappings within the polyhedral compilation model. The targeted applications include both the regular and irregular scientific domains. The intermediate representation can be integrated into existing compiler infrastructures. A specification language implemented as a domain specific language in C++ describes the graph components and the transformations that can be applied. The visual representation allows users to reason about optimizations. Graph variants can be translated into source code or other representation. The language, intermediate representation, and associated transformations have been applied to improve the performance of differential equation solvers, or sparse matrix operations, tensor decomposition, and structured multigrid methods
